Happy Father’s Day! Constructing the Perfect Father’s Day Card by Jenna Jaxon

First let me wish all fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, new fathers, and anyone who has been like a father a very Happy Father’s Day!

Most of my readers, however, will be the daughters, granddaughters, wives and other female relatives who are honoring them today as well. Father’s Day cards are one of our most popular and thoughtful gifts and as I was looking on the internet, I found some excellent suggestions for Father’s Day messages in a post by Keely Chace, from the writers of Hallmark cards. So below are some of the recommendations for what to write in that all important card.

If the card is for your father, “What makes your dad the best? Well, he’s your dad, for starters, and that all by itself is pretty special.” So the sentiments should be foremost from the heart. They can range from a simple, “Dad, you’re the greatest” to something more personal, such as “Happy Father’s Day to the dad who struck fear into every dance, homecoming, and prom date I ever had and he still treats me like a princess.”

For a message from more than one person—siblings, partners, spouses, family—you can choose from such sentiments as “So glad we all share such fun times together, Daddy” and “With you, Dad, Father’s Day means lots of tasty grilled things and lots for our family to celebrate!”

Grandfathers, whether called Grandpa, Papa, Big Daddy, or granddad, love to be remembered as well. Whether it’s a simple, “Happy Father’s Day to the best grandpa in the world!” or a bit bigger expression, such as, “I hope I can create as many good memories for my grandchildren as you have given me.”

If your relationship is strained or not the best, do not despair. As long as you are honest in your feelings, you can still honor father, grandfather, or step-father with a simple and sincere greeting.

For your husband or partner, Hallmark says, “respect and gratitude are key messages to convey in your card for the man you love on Father’s Day. Whether the two of you are in the thick of diapers and carpools or you’re in a position to look back and laugh together, he will love reading that you have noticed and appreciated the good things he’s done as a dad.” You can make it short and sweet, “I love our family, and I love you,” or the more flowery “Happy Father’s Day to the man of my heart, the father of our children, the love of my life.”

Whatever your relationship, have a happy and safe day honoring all Dads everywhere.
