This week, we’re taking a break from THE SCOURGE (which you should totally just pre-order or ask your library to pre-order) to discuss a big announcement that dropped this week. And I mean, big!

HORIZON-Logo

Beginning in January 2017, Scholastic will release a brand new multi-platform series called HORIZON. Book 1 will be written by Scott Westerfeld, internationally bestselling author of books such as The Uglies, Leviathan, and Zeroes (one of my favorite reads this year!).

I will be writing book 2, which will release in September 2017. I expect to begin writing my book this very week, and I can’t wait to start!

I think the cover and title for book 1 are going to be announced soon, and trust me, they are awesome!!!

From the Publisher’s Weekly article, HORIZON “opens as a diverse group of kids step from the wreckage of a plane crash to find themselves stranded, at odds with one another, and threatened by curious and terrifying creatures.”

So to enter the contest in comments below, the question of the week is:

If you were part of a small group of plane crash survivors, what is the very first thing you would do after exiting the plane?

Allison Sijgers If I were a part of a small group of plane crash survivors the first thing I would do would be assessing the health of my fellow survivors. I would do what I could to help the other survivors with thier wounds, and begin to assess what kind of resources we would have access to- water, food, shelter, etc. I would want my fellow survivors to feel safe with me.

Sherri (Rollow) Stowe Sutton Since the question asked "what I would do after I exited the plane," I will assume that I already checked on all the other passengers that share my plight. I would then immediately determine the security situation. Are we safe? Is there a possibility of harm? I would then give a very short motivating speech about survival and helping one another because we are in this together. Once we all shared the knowing glances that our situation totally stinks, I would ask if anyone has military, fire or law enforcement experience. Most importantly, I would work with the others to establish security of our perimeter. Conduct emergency first aid as quickly as possible, and establish if anyone has medical experience to care for the casualties. Then scavenge from the wreckage for useful materials. If the wreckage is unstable or in an area where it is unsafe from the elements and/or wildlife, a new base of operations would be top priority. Reconnaissance and scavenge teams would have to be sent out to find a safer shelter and survival rations. If at all possible, the shelter should be established as close to the wreckage as possible, initially, incase a search and rescue team actually comes looking for us.
That's what I would do.

Shannon Assuming that everyone is all right, I'd try to figure out where we are. Maybe pull out a cell phone--only to find it's not working or has no service. Assess the land--are we on a tropical island or something else entirely? Are there any signs of other people? And I'd arm myself. A stick, a rock, maybe a broken pipe out of the plane, because I sure as heck don't know what's out in the wilderness, and I'd rather have the chance to defend myself as I look for food, before I become a meal for something else!

Zoë I would first try to see if there was anyone else okay and of course give them medical attention (to the best of my ability, at least) if necessary. Once I'd done that, I would try my best to contact other people that weren't involved in the crash. I would try any phones available and if that failed try to see if we were in a populated area with other people to help us. After all, if you can contact other, friendly people then they can help you all get back home safe.

Sue After exiting the plane, to a group of curious and terrifying creatures I would look to see if my group was safe and see if they were friendly creatures (appearances can be deceiving) or if I needed to protect us from the creatures. The next thing I would do was look for water, then food and finally shelter. I would try to figure out what could be salvaged from the plane. I hope that the group would began to work together because we would not want someone to hoard all the supplies for themselves.

Emily Beard Just going to be totally honest, the first thing after exiting the plane I would collapse on the ground and not move from complete shock for a few minutes.

Christina Anastasia Stavridi Well, since it's after exiting the plane, I assume I would have gotten over bafflement and had my terror and shock under control. You also said 'if you were part of a small group of survivors', so I imagine I would have seen the other survivors and step outside the plane with them. When I'd exit the plane I would try to figure out where we landed. Are we in a faraway island, tottaly isolated? The woods? A city? Near a city, where we can get help? All the next actions depend on the answer to the question "where are we?". If it's somewhere near other people, a couple of people or everyone from our group could go for help. If its somewhere isolated and dangerous, I would try to think of ways to survive and defend ourselves until we can and find a way to call for help. I don't think anyone would have any intentions of staying there.

Ellie Robison Make sure I wasn't dead and then check on others. And then I would discuss who we should eat first if we ran out of food ;)
