new novella opener

In a moment of over-excitement, I did promise this yesterday... The opening two paragraphs of "Penric and the Shaman".

This will be all the teasers for now; the whole thing should be along in some finite time, less than two weeks I hope. Should I get anything more definite, I'll pass it along.

Meanwhile, next Saturday at 1 PM, I'll be doing a signing including the Subterranean Press hardcover edition of "Penric's Demon" here in Minneapolis at Uncle Hugo's. I'll post another reminder later.

On to the prose...

Five gods, but vultures were huge when seen at this distance.

The bird cocked its pale head on its sinuous neck, peering at Inglis like a nearsighted old man, as if uncertain whether he was its enemy or its… breakfast, judging by the graying of the scudding damp sky overhead. It shuffled back and forth, its pantaloon-feathers stirring on its legs as it raised one talon-tipped foot and contemplated its dilemma. The hooked yellow beak seemed to take aim. Inglis opened his parched mouth and gusted a harsh hiss, like the fire in a blacksmith’s forge when the bellows blew. The bird skipped back a pace, raising vast brown wings, as if it were a villain in a play swirling his cloak just before declaiming his defiance to fate.

Kosigan Definitely getting this when it pops up. Any news on an audio version?

Snonono *vibrates intensely*
Can't wait for the ebook! (I'd have to move out to fit in more physical copies so I had to switch.)

No, it's way too early for that yet. But if/when there is news, I will certainly post it here.

Ta, L. Also waiting eagerly.

Jerri Thanks for the opening. When I learned the title, I wondered if I should re-read Hallowed Hunt before reading Penric and the Shaman, to refresh my memory on how the shaman magic works but I read that book for the second or third time this past winter. So, I have decided to re-read Penric's Demon before the new novella comes out, then read it, and after that go back to The Hallowed Hunt. Which will probably then result in re-reading the Penric stories followed by the other 5-gods novels, which would be my first time reading them in chronological order.

This sounds like a plan.

In some ways, "Penric and the Shaman" is a bit of a codicil to The Hallowed Hunt, but I believe it should be readable as a stand-alone not only from the novel, but from the preceding novella. Complete in this kit, batteries included. As ever, I shall have to wait for reader response to find out for sure.

(Side sucker-bet: old readers will say one has to read umpty-ump other stories first; actual new readers will not.)

Diana That's 'cos the old readers will take any excuse to re-read the whole series!

Terngirl Bliss! So excited! Moar Penric and Des! #happydance

message 8: by Jane (new)

Jane Bigelow One of the best things about e-books is that they make publishing shorter lengths, like novellas, a reasonable project. So (shrieks of joy) we get more Penric and Desdemona much faster than if we had to wait for an entire novel
