Publish or Perish? Some Quick Thoughts on Submitting Your Work

I've had a couple of interesting conversations with other writers over the years about publishing. For a while, I felt like I had a great advantage over writers who are obliged to promote an academic career or an established reputation with a big-name publisher: I could choose to publish "wherever I wanted."
