Municipal elections 2011: Godzille snaping at the heels of Jacob Zuma


In 2007, Helen Zille becomes leader of the Democratic Alliance. Since then when the party's appeal was mainly the relatively well-off white minority, she started concentrating her efforts on broadening the appeal so much so that the ANC and Jacob Zuma are beginning to feel her bite in the 2011 municipal elections. Black voters, no longer, see a "white" party like the DA as their political opponent as was the case before 1994. The DA has made inroads into the traditional base of the ANC. After securing an end to white minority rule in 1994, the ANC has won a clear majority in every election since then. However ANC support is decreasing due to increasing unemployment, persisting inequality and non-delivery of services
