Knight of Swords Excerpt
Our horses thundered along in the blue and grey tinged haze that haunted the beach's flat white surface as night began to close in. As we neared the middle of the beach we emerged from the veil of mist like dark ethereal phantoms. I felt sand spray against my face as my horse kicked up the fine grains between its hooves. My exhilaration was at its height. I felt sure of glory. The tide was out a fair distance away and did not prove a hindrance. Up ahead I saw a hearse descend a wooden ramp that led on to the beach from a small gulley between the dunes. The coachman wore funeral garb and served as a frightening spectacle, cracking his whip high with brutal force at the sleek black horses that led the carriage as it raced along the beach towards the caves. It was being driven at a dangerous pace, nearly tipping to one side. There was a coffin inside. Juliet. I prayed it was her but my sensitive hearing picked up a frantic heartbeat. I reached out to the mind of the individual trapped in the coffin. It was a terrified young woman. She was bound, gagged and semi-naked. She was to be part of the ritual, offered as a human sacrifice to the gods for the joining of Sebastian and Juliet. Disappointment threatened to crush me.
No doubt the young woman was meant as a distraction to slow me down while Sebastian took Juliet to the hidden maze of caves Gabriel had described in the cliffs at the end of the beach. I did not know which cave he was to take Juliet to and I feared that by the time I found her the ritual would be complete. But I would not let another woman be murdered by Sebastian. I would not forgive myself if this young woman died and neither would Juliet if I did not try to help. I had to move fast.
