Have fun. Enjoy your weekend!

Sara :)

Chapter One

Montague Court, the Country Parish of Bramley, not far from London

Lady Penelope Windsmoor sat back in the black velvet interior of her father’s Post Chaise carriage and vowed to say no more on the subject that they had been so keenly discussing before commencing their journey. It was a clear beautiful moonlit night in September for their journey to her Aunt’s home in Kensington. And she did not wish to feel the fierce stinging blow of her father’s hand across her cheek once more. But he was not about to let achieve any peace. The moment he closed the carriage door and sat down next to her he began their argument once again.

‘How long will you keep this rebellion up, Penelope?’ her father demanded roughly, banging his silver topped cane on the carriage floor making her jump. The carriage moved off.

Penelope took a breath and steeled herself.

‘Until you come to your senses, father. I will not marry a man I do not love, least of all, a man who has a cruel barbaric reputation and is rumoured to have been the sole cause of his first wife’s death,’ she said firmly, pouting her rosy red lips with indignation. ‘Is that what you really want for me, father,’ she almost sneered the words, the effort to keep her temper proving too much.

Her father grunted and cursed her. She braced herself for the inevitable speech about discipline he would give her yet again. A feeling of suffocation at her situation began to press down upon her.

‘Lord Hamnet is a strict disciplinarian both with his family and his servants. I admire that in a man. A man must keep control of those who depend upon him for protection. A woman and family must be governed strongly,’ her father informed her with conviction. ‘ If Lord Hamnet was responsible for the death of his first wife then I warrant she deserved it.’

‘Father, how can you say such a thing?’ Penelope was shocked at her father’s callous words. Her voice rose with contempt and anger at his intolerable cruelness. ‘Is that how you justify my own mother’s death after you heartlessly beat her?’ she snapped leaning towards Lord Windsmoor.

Penelope regretted her words the moment she saw her father’s fair complexion flush to a deep shade of crimson under his powdered white wig. He was only a man of forty years and his appearance should have been still youthful but his bad temperament made his face hard and lined giving him the appearance of being much older.

Lord Windsmoor’s vindication for his daughter’s undisciplined outburst was satisfied with the swipe of the hard back of his hand across her delicate pale cheek. His large emerald ring contributed to his bruising assault by cutting her skin. Her piteous cry did little to assuage his vile temper and the tears that splashed onto her countenance were lost on his conscience.

‘I will stand no more of your nonsense, child. As your father I demand your obedience. You will become Lord Hamnet’s property as a wife next week as arranged if I have to deliver you to the altar bound and gagged. This marriage is essential to secure this family’s future wealth. I will be obeyed.’

Lady Windsmoor nursed her swelling cheek and the small cut at her mouth with a trembling slender hand. She was afraid of her father but as on every occasion he had raised his hand to her she refused to let him see just how much.

‘And I will defy you to the last, even with my dying breath,’ she challenged vainly attempting to remove the shake in her voice.

Lord Windsmoor leaned over her until his face was mere inches from her own. His cold watery grey eyes darkened with more rage than she ever thought it possible for a man to feel to the point that Lady Windsmoor feared for her very life.

‘The large inheritance you were given by your mother should have passed to me. She believed she could outwit me but you will pay the cost on her behalf. If you do not marry Lord Hamnet next week I will see you dead,’ he shouted.

Terror shook Lady Windsmoor to her very core and for a brief moment she consider the wild impulsive act of jumping from the carriage and braving an encounter with the thieves and vagabonds that roamed the forest in which they now travelled. Before she could consider the matter any further the carriage came to a sudden stop causing both father and daughter to lurch forward in the carriage.

Penelope looked out of the carriage window to find a striking tall figure of a man sat astride a black stallion blocking their path in the road. He wore a mask and cast a dashing romantic figure in the moonlight that shone down upon him as he pointed a pistol at the driver of the carriage and the footman.

‘Stand and Deliver,’ the man ordered in a deep commanding voice.

‘Damn Highwaymen, the whole town is being overrun with them,’ Lord Windsmoor muttered. ‘Use the pistol I gave you James and shoot the fellow dead. Let us be on our way,’ he said banging his cane on the roof of the carriage as he shouted to his driver.

But silence was to follow. Only the sound of horses hooves approaching the carriage could be heard. Penelope dug her hand into the pocket of her dress and felt for the pistol she had been carrying on the journey, unknown to her father. There had been several hold ups in the area of the last week with one man dead and a woman ravished. Lady Windsmoor had no intention of being taken advantage of by another man or being robbed. Slowly she pulled it out, ignoring her father’s constant orders to the driver. She heard the Highwayman dismount his horse and his footsteps approach the carriage. Wasting no further time she opened the carriage door and stepped out onto the road brandishing the loaded pistol defiantly at the Highwayman.

The Highwayman halted his progress, surprised at the presence of the dainty woman standing before him armed with a pistol. Penelope watched his lips curl with an amused smile and his dark hauntingly beautiful chestnut eyes twinkle with mischief. He removed his hat revealing long ebony hair tied neatly with a black velvet bow.

‘At your service, your Ladyship,’ he grinned.[image error]

THE DEVIL YOU KNOW BLURB

“You take one step out of that door without me and you are in serious trouble. Leave my side once and you are a dead woman.”

Christian Dalban is hired to protect Isabelle Mayer from the violent head of a mafia family who will stop at nothing to force her back into his bed. But Christian is determined that she won’t find out why he is the only man capable of succeeding where others have failed. If she knew the reason she would never trust him with her life nor would he blame her. But as their relationship develops into a passionate sexual encounter Christian realises that he is not the only one keeping a secret that could threaten both of their lives.....

THE DEVIL YOU KNOW EXCERPT

Christian follows the line of Isabelle’s frightened gaze. There is a crowd of tourists being rounded up by a tour guide across the road. In front of them stands a tall figure, dressed in an immaculate well tailored black suit - the kind that was made to order. The words angel of death come into Christian’s mind. Declan Mayer is standing staring at them. His dark good looking but cruel features are edged with hardness and slashed with betrayal.

Mayer’s brown eyes are narrowed solely at Isabelle. Christian can see her hands shaking like the rest of her body. He reaches out and covers her hand on the table.

“I won’t let him touch you,” he hears himself tell her fiercely.

He’ll fucking break Mayer’s legs if he takes one step towards her.

“He won’t let you have a choice,” Isabelle whispers.

She attempts to rise from the chair, her eyes never leaving Declan’s face for a second as if she
wants to keep the enemy in plain sight. Christian makes her sit back down.

“This is where I need you to really trust me. Trust me with your life,” he says firmly still holding her hand, his own eyes never leaving Declan.

“I guess I don’t have a choice, Mr Dalban.”

“No you don’t,” he acknowledges. “I’m going to pay and we are going to leave and go back to my apartment. Do everything I ask of you and…”

“Don’t argue,” he hears her whisper under her breath.

He reaches into his inside pocket and casually brings out his wallet, beckoning the waiter over so he can pay the bill. Mayer just stands there watching them. He is as still as one of the sculptures in the Louvre.

Christian sees Isabelle run her hand through her hair once, twice, three times. Time to move. He takes her arm and pulls her up with a jolt to his side. He takes her hand in a firm tight grip that even she can’t wriggle out of. She whimpers but he doesn’t hear any words of protest as he leads her away from the front of the restaurant towards her tormentor.

Christian can feel his pulse racing along with his heart. He wants to meet danger, face it down and laugh in its face. It’s what kept him going all those years in the army risking his life for Queen and country. Maybe he just has a death wish. He doesn’t care, his priority is keeping Isabelle out of that bastard’s clutches.[image error]

Hi Everyone,

I have decided to write more romantic stories and have fun. So here is the start of my latest offering on my blog. Hope you enjoy it. I will be posting the first chapter very soon.

Wicked Lord Morgan

Prologue

1771 Abalone Park, just outside London

Lord Jacob Morgan fastened his black eye mask in place and tied it neatly at the back of his head. He grinned wickedly at himself in the mirror greatly amused at his attire. He turned to his Valet to take the black tricorne hat from him and put it on admiring himself in the mirror once again. Morgan bore the garb of a Highwayman, long black waistcoat, complemented by a frothy lace white shirt and a plain fitted black velvet coat. He gave a loud laugh.

‘Langsdale, do I not look the most stylish Gentleman of the Road?’

‘Quite, your Lordship,’ Langsdale said curtly with a disapproving frown. ‘I just pray that you are not caught. I do not believe your dear departed father and mother would ever forgive me for letting you undertake such a folly for petty amusement. They, like myself, would not wish to see you upon the Gallows.’

Lord Morgan’s deep chestnut eyes darkened for a moment as he cast them over his valet , striking him a threatening figure in his unusual outfit and disguise. But Langsdale did not appear deterred and Morgan did not reproach the man for his liberty. Another smiled curled the Highwayman’s lips, the moment gone.

‘You know I get bored, Langsdale. You would deny me my fun? Not to mention all of those helpless pretty damsels eager to meet a handsome man of the road on their lonely carriage rides?’ he mocked.

Langsdale gave a sigh as he moved away from Lord Morgan watching him put on his sleek black leather gloves.

‘But you have more than enough money and property to do with as you please. Why should you steal?’ the older man enquired with impatience.

Lord Morgan’s tone in reply hinted at his own impatience.

‘We have already discussed this matter. I take for the fun of it. Do I not give the jewels to the poor of this parish to supply their needs. They are most grateful, are they not? I do not keep any revenue from my exploits nor do I have a need to. Besides, a bet is a bet. Lord Thomson and Winn wagered that I could not manage the feat five times without being caught. This is my third time and I confess it makes my blood stir with excitement.’

‘But......’

‘But nothing, Langsdale. I will not hear anymore.’

‘I do believe you need a wife to manage you, your Lordship,’ Langsdale ventured boldly.

‘Another subject you will not let rest. You are as obsessed as my father was. I am a young man of twenty three I have no wish for a wife. They are troublesome creatures and vain with it. Marriage would bore me in an instant. Now hand me my pistol.’

Langsdale gave another long suffering sigh as he moved to the table to pick up Morgan’s shiny new pistol bought solely for the purpose of his exploit. He checked it was properly loaded before he handed it to his employer.
‘Are you not lonely, your Lordship?’

‘Lonely, what the devil would I be lonely for? I bed a different woman most nights of the week. I am not lonely,’ his Lordship was greatly amused but there was an anxiety in his tone that betrayed his fear of the truth being found out.

‘Surely you are lonely for a woman of intelligence, breeding you may converse with on equal terms. For a lifelong companion who you may share a close bond with . . .’

‘Enough. There is not a woman out there I would wish to be tied to. It would take a special perhaps unearthly beautiful creature to tame me, Langsdale and I am quite certain such a woman does not walk upon this earth.’

‘Oh I am quite sure one will eventually be found, mi lord,’ Langsdale smiled following Morgan out of his bedroom.[image error]
