110426tt 11 04 26 26 Apr 2011 The Times Failed attempt to crucify Julius Malema

Afri-forum takes Julius Malema to the equality court for hate speech. This action once more puts Julius Malema into the limelight and backfires on Afri-forum. The whole ANC political machine goes in defense for the right to sing the struggle song " dubul'ibhunu " where the words "Shoot the Boer" appear. While the case is not yet over, Julius Malema seems to have gotten the upper hand, after giving his own testimony and the ignorance shown by Afriforum's lawyers. Malema cleverly uses this occasion to portray himself as a "victimised" revolutionary leader - defender of rights of the poor black majority. The lawyers for Afri-forum, when questioned, have difficulty in telling the difference between Peter Mokaba's chant the "kill the boer, kill the farmer" and the "dubul'ibhunu" of the song.

Zapiro's cartoon cleverly uses the Easter scene to show how Afri-forum's (dressed as the Roman soldiers) actions have backfired. Instead of being crucified, Malema becomes the hero. The twist in the cartoon is that Malema speaks as if he was part of the struggle but most of it happened before he was born or before he was old enough to know about it
