Thumbtack Directory Bias, Prejudice and Injustices

Thumbtack directory prejudice and injustices are documented below.

The elite providers are the ones who are listed on thumbtack's 'landing pages' - not based on points (as you would be led to believe when you post your business on thumbtack).

Thumbtack support wrote me saying:

'Not everyone gets listed on a landing page. Whether we have a landing page for your area and profession is determined by a fairly complex algorithm developed by our engineers. That algorithm takes into account many things, including the number of other people in your profession and area, the population of nearby cities, how many Thumbtack points you and others have, and the amount of traffic Google has in your area.'

'It can take up to three months after you post for our engineers to determine whether you will be listed on a landing page.'

'If you are listed - we'll send you an email about that.'

'Sorry this is so confusing, and sorry there's not much you can do about it! We are also at the mercy of Google on this one. :-)

Thumbtack directory bias, prejudice and injustices are obvious ...as their employees agree calling them 'confusing'.

Paul Thumbtack makes NO sense whatsoever!

Thumbtack's 'elite providers' have 144 points under life coaching http://www.thumbtack.com/ny/new-york/...

Whereas I have 174 points and am not even on the list.

This has nothing to do with Google and everything to do with your website, web designers and internal policies.

If Thumbtack cannot show itself to be a reputable website and company, I cannot foresee it having much success with the international community and local business professionals (many of whom I'm willing to promote Thumbtack directory to and refer to Thumbtack's site once this matter is corrected).

Garyneal That's kind of dumb that we can't do anything about it. But I guess Google does a pretty good job. I put my HVAC repair company into some directories and it seemed to work well for me.

Ginny I find it interesting that thumbtack comes right out and tells you that its policy is confusing. If they know that it's confusing, why don't they do something about it? It's not like are running a construction virginia beach company that has to adhere to federal standards!

message 4: by Garyneal (new)

Garyneal Thanks for your comment Ginny. I agree that it is a little weird that they just come out and say it. I mean, if you need to say that your system is confusing, why not just make it un-confusing? Again, I put my buddy's mobile notary into some directories, and it seems to be helping him too.

Sillhouine Sanderson Wow thats crazy that they're just dropping the words "Sorry this is so confusing, and sorry there's not much you can do about it!" I believe you can always do something about it if you're rightfully equipped! Even if you need a residential electrician in Fort Collins co they arent gonna say the same put-down where you cant do it yourself!

message 6: by Sam (new)

Sam Esh That is really interesting. Sillhouine is right though, you can try your best to change it. It just takes a lot of elbow grease. http://www.masterlandscape.net

Jim Sanders Hmmm, that doesn't sound very helpful, it's not a seller. If you can't satisfy customers or help them understand what's going on you're not going to last long. "sorry that there's not much you can do about" gets me, too, doesn't seem the best way to comfort and keep a customer.

George Puzo I guess that in any growing there will be unfair advantages due to prejudice. All we can really do is just avoid those companies.

Abed Nadier It is surprisingly more difficult to be listed on a landing page. After reading this article, it makes sense why my blog is having such a hard time. I know that it's important to get Google traffic on your website and that will help it be listed but I'm not sure quite how to do that. Definitely something to look into.

Wayne Parker That is surprising that you would just drop it like that. Putting something as blunt as, "This is how it is, and you can't change it," isn't very appealing. This is just my opinion though.

Hilary Kimbel I'm thinking about starting up a website for my small business, so this information is definitely good for me to know! What would you say the best way to get noticed on the web is? If you get good ratings will you get noticed more in search engines? www.copperslateroofingbaltimore.com

John Bond I usually use it for my company. It seems to work well as I have been getting a lot more traffic since I put it up there. Also, they built a road next to my house.

Julia Carlson Sillhouine wrote: "Wow thats crazy that they're just dropping the words "Sorry this is so confusing, and sorry there's not much you can do about it!" I believe you can always do something about it if you're rightfull..."
Sillhouine, I completely agree. If you blatantly state that it's confusing, you should change it. No one likes being confused. I definitely don't!

George Puzo I could not agree with you more Julia, being confused can be very disheartening. What methods have you found to confront being confused? I find I am often confused when I am at school but I learned that if I read the material before class I am fine.

John Bond I don't know a lot about thumbtack. I go there occasionally for some articles. The site itself is really no concern to me.
