As clear as the nose on your face. Well to me it is.
Two middle age Holmesians, male, one gay, the other straight, writers, fanboys, who share a sense of humour, board a train for Cardiff. They discuss a favourite film; The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. Both agree that Billy Wilder was genius, and lament on the fact that Wilder did not go the distance in making Holmes obviously gay in the film. They know that the era politics and the big studio finance machine precluded that occurring, as did the culture in Conan Doyle’s day. They discus updating Holmes, they think of the current atmosphere concerning the LGB community from the BBC, they play with the idea that they could do it; finally make a gay Sherlock Holmes. They take it further, a happy ending with Watson reciprocating the love from Holmes. The two men know they a have a chance here to make history. They have a production company that backs a pilot. The pilot sets the tone for the gay version of events, it’s so gay it’s palpable. The BBC look at it and say yes, but do it bigger and better, take your time, keep the secret till you are ready. Make it a huge water cooler, landmark event.
That is TJLC. What about this genesis is difficult to believe? I am the same generation as Moffat and Gatiss, from a similar cultural background, I too have been in the Holmesian world since a teenager, I felt the same anguish watching TPLOSH, I want a final happy resolution. So of course Steven and Mark would want that. For me it is obvious, Mark and Steven want to fix the past transgressions against Holmes and Watson. ‘Sherlock’ is a fix it fic.
We have hard evidence now of a BBC agenda, thanks to skully, and we have the game mapped out, in my mind to perfection, by LSIT. Plus we have S3 and the start of the writers showing their hand as we close in on the end game. TJLC is just two fanboys wet dream of the emancipation of their heroes from the closet. What is difficult to comprehend here? It’s what I would do if I were in their position. And as far as ‘lies’ are concerned; they are just secrets being kept. Which is as it should be.
Maybe the world ‘consiracy’ is the root of the problem, I think it should have been ‘conclusion’ or ‘plan’, even ‘agenda’. Maybe people would have been more open to the evidence. But that is a moot point now. At the end of the day I can totally empathise with Mark and Steven as a mature, worn out, seen all the pastiche and adaptations, fan that longs for a happy resolution. A demi-homosexual man and a bisexual man can now have that epic love story they have been denied for over a century. The fact that it was planned since inception? I say ‘of course it bloody was!’
Hear hear!
