Getting Started
Tree Soldier: A Novel of Love, Forgiveness and the Great Depression is a labor of love that began more than a decade ago with an assignment in a history class. I had heard the stories of the Civilian Conservation Corps from my mother who grew up in Idaho, but I had little knowledge of the organization nor its legacy in my neck of the woods, the North Cascade Mountains in Washington State. Three months later with a stack of notes and several interviews with former "boys" under my belt, makings of a solid non-fiction paper (later published in a historical journal) but a story of young man who has fled from the East to the rugged mountains and forests of the Pacific NW.
I not only love writing historical fiction, but love the places the research takes me. Over years, I have written several articles on the CCC and continue to support efforts to save former camps and tell the stories of the young men who helped create parks, campgrounds, plant trees. We have much to thank them.
Tree Soldier is now available on Createspace and Amazon in book and on Kindle.
