The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) disapproved of Trevor Manuel's open letter criticising government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi for his remarks on coloureds. The government spokesperson made comments in a TV interview a year ago that coloureds were “over-concentrated” in the Western Cape. South Africa is now rocked by a fierce new debate about racism and the spotlight is on the tense relationship between two racial groups that were both oppressed under apartheid: blacks and “coloureds.” South Africa's coloureds are mixed-race people. Some derive from black African and white European relationships. Others have diverse ethnic backgrounds including Indian, Indonesian and Khoisan, or “bushmen.” Coloureds make up nearly 9 percent of South Africa's population of the country's 50 million people. Coloureds have a long history in South Africa dating back to the 1700s and have their own distinctive accent, cuisine and culture. In general they have not supported the African National Congress. They are concentrated in Cape Town, which is a major reason why the Western Cape province is the only one in South Africa not run by the ANC.
