First American Book on Canadian Rock Band The Tragically Hip

On August 20th, 2016 11.7 million Canadians stood transfixed, watching the final concert of The Tragically Hip, and the rest of the world asked, “Who is this band?” New York Times best-selling pop journalist Marc Shapiro answers that question in the first American book about this Canadian rock band that largely shunned the spotlight but has become the standard bearer of a resurgent sense of Canadian pride and patriotism.

What is Hip? The Life And Times Of The Tragically Hip delves deep beneath the surface of this rock and roll story to discover how a band that spent more than three decades in the rock and roll trenches selling millions of albums and opening for the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Who and Led Zeppelin’s Page & Plant, remained almost unknown outside their home country, even as they rose to the level of rock royalty in Canada.

Through extensive research and some well-placed sources, author Shapiro has put together a complete look at The Tragically Hip’s rise from humble Kingston roots to endless tours, the internal struggles to keep their music fresh and the fanatic loyalty they fostered in millions of Canadian fans of all ages and generations. Fans that would unite to honor the band and shed more than a few tears when it was announced that singer Gord Downie had been diagnosed with brain cancer and that The Hip were about to embark on what may well be their final tour.

“What drew me to The Tragically Hip was a lot of questions I had,” author Shapiro said. “The most enticing to me being ‘How did they do it?’ “This was a band that almost completely avoided compromises creatively and business wise. And to be honest, their career might have turned out easier and different if they hadn’t. But you’ve got to admire anyone, band or mortal, who forges their own path regardless of the consequences. I had to know what makes rugged individualists tick and this book answers those questions.”

Riverdale Avenue Books just published What is Hip? The Life and Times of The Tragically Hip by Marc Shapiro!

This awesome book takes a look at a band profoundly famous in Canada; beyond its borders, largely unknown.

The Tragically Hip are not cartoon rockers. They are real men who live by their creativity and their principles. For more than three decades in the rock and roll trenches selling millions of albums and opening for the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Who and Led Zeppelin’s Page & Plant, the band remained anonymous outside their home country, while rising to the level of rock royalty in Canada.

In this first-ever detailed look at the life and times of The Tragically Hip, New York Times Best Selling Author Marc Shapiro delves deep beneath the surface of this rock and roll story to discover how a band that largely shunned the spotlight has become the standard bearer of a resurgent sense of Canadian pride and patriotism.

Welcome New LPA Agent, Ben Grange

The L. Perkins Agency is thrilled to announce that Ben Grange, formerly the assistant at the JABerwocky Literary Agency, has joined the Agency where he will be representing authors of both fiction and some nonfiction.

Before joining the L. Perkins Agency, Grange had a varied publishing experience. He was a publishing intern at a small publisher in Salt Lake City, Utah, and then completed internships at three literary agencies before his most recent position as the assistant at JABberwocky.

At the L. Perkins Agency, he will be representing middle grade fiction of all types, and is particularly on the lookout for exceptional author-illustrators who write middle grade or young adult. Grange has a penchant for young adult science fiction and fantasy, particularly weird or slightly dark stories (à la The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater). He loves epic fantasy and science fiction, and although his focus is on middle grade and young adult, he won't say no to a great fantasy or sci-fi. He is also interested in pop culture nonfiction for authors with established platforms.

“I'm thrilled to take this next step in my journey as an agent, and can't wait to roll up my sleeves and get to work. There are big things happening in children's fiction right now, and I'm glad I get to be a part of it."

Said Agency founder and President, Lori Perkins, “We are excited to have Ben join the team, as his interests compliment those of the existing six agents. This is going to be wonderful expansion of the agency’s place in the publishing industry.”

About the Agency
Founded in 1987 by Lori Perkins, a former newspaper publisher and editor, the L. Perkins Agency specializes in many different genres with seven agents representing approximately 100 authors to the publishing industry. The agency also has agents in many foreign territories and works with an established film/television agency to maximize exposure for our clients. The L. Perkins Agency’s seven acquiring agents have a diverse range of tastes and are currently looking for material in a wide spectrum of genres and subjects. Lperkinsagency.com

RAB Publication Party Tonight at NYC’s KGB Lit Bar for “1984 in the 21st Century” Anthology

Riverdale Avenue Books will hold a publication and launch party for 1984 in the 21st Century with readings from the essay collection from a selection of the authors at New York City’s quirky literary bar, KGB’s, in the East Village on April 5th, 2017.

The new anthology features essays on how George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984 still resonates nearly seven decades after it was published. The anthology will be published on April 4th, 2017, the date on which the novel begins in the classic dystopian novel, and will be free online at RiverdaleAveBooks.com.

After the novel 1984 made the #1 spot on Amazon’s best-seller list, Riverdale Avenue Books put out an international call for submissions of essays. Articles in the book include such notable writers as science fiction legend David Brin, Yahoo News columnist Matt Bai, feminist academic Melissa Febos, and 20 others authors, as well as average citizens.

“We thought the location of a former Soviet watering hole was the perfect place for a reading of essays about surveillance and ThoughtCrime in the 21st century,” said Publisher Lori Perkins.

Anticipated readers include Perry Brass, Sherri Donovan, David Jester, Marc Polite and Alexander Urbelis and Aaron Zwintscher. Print books will be available for sale (and signing).
