Call for Essays for #ME TOO! book

Call for Essays for

#ME TOO:
Essays About How and Why This Happened,
What it Means, and How to Make Sure it Never Happens Again

Due Date: October 23, 2017

Every woman I know is talking about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual harassment and rape accusations, and the groundswell of reaction and exposure this has unleashed.

No woman was surprised by the response to the Twitter blackout that Rose McGowan called for, or the number of tweets the #MeToo campaign drew.

But now what?

This is a turning point, and it needs to be memorialized and passed around and passed on, and although Twitter is a fantastic means of igniting a fire, it needs to keep burning, like a torch.

I’m a word woman. As a trained journalist, a newspaper owner, a writer, and now the Publisher of Riverdale Avenue Books, I believe in the power and permanence of words in print.

So Riverdale Avenue Books, a woman owned leading e-book publisher, is putting its money, words and power, behind this and publishing a collection of essays titled

#ME TOO:
Essays About How and Why This Happened,
What it Means, and How to Make Sure it Never Happens Again.

This book is about the future—not a collection of harassment memories. We need voices—our voices—to figure out what we can do, and do it, and to pass it round virally.

So I’m asking for essays from everyone—not just women—about the above from 250 words and up. Send as a word doc with a brief bio.

The book will be distributed free as an ebook (Riverdale is in discussions with Amazon to partner with us to give away the print edition for free—if they won’t, we’ll just charge cost).

So there’s no pay. But there never is for a movement or for changing society’s views.

My business partner asked me “why are we doing this?” I told him, because we can and because we can donate our time and resources and crash this book out without having to go before a board of directors and explain why we’re doing it, unlike the all the other mainstream publishing houses that are rife with conflicts and internal gender politics.

So think of this book as feminism’s Pentagon Papers.

We’re going to publish next week. Our target date is October 26th.

So tell your friends, writers you admire, anyone who you know has a story to tell or thoughts to share, or who has ever said, “You know what we should do….”

Let’s make history. Let’s change our world.

Let’s show the world what the feminist adage “the personal is political!” really means.

Submit your essays to: submissions@riverdaleavebooks.com

Sherlock Holmes 125th Anniversary!

Celebrate the 125th anniversary of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes with passionate mystery!
The Charlotte Olmes Mystery Series by Lambda Literary Award winner Debra Hyde recasts the classic eccentric detective genius in ways never before seen. Passions both criminal and carnal come alive in vivid and exacting detail..

Book One- Of White Snakes and Misshaped Owls

A dead body in a back alley means little to the rough streets of 1880s New York City—until Charlotte Olmes, woman detective, steps onto the scene. Crime-solving on behalf of her female clients, Olmes eschews decorum and ventures into places forbidden to the fairer sex, sleuthing after clues hidden, elusive, and often distasteful.

Book Two- The Tattered Heiress

Margaret Sutherland is a tattered heiress, her life torn apart by death, sorrow, and the loss of prosperity and status. She skulks about the Ladies Mile, furtive and avoiding, draped in an ancient, worn cape. Until Joanna Wilson, faithful companion and lover to detective Charlotte Olmes, spots her in the famed shopping district and knows something's wrong.

Burn the Binary!Select Writings on the Politics of Being Trans Genderqueer and Nonbinary by Riki Wilchins

Riki Wilchins has been in the forefront of the the transgender movement for three decades leading the fight for rights before Caitlyn Jenner was a household name. Riverdale Avenue Books, the leading LGBT publisher, is releasing a collection of essays by Riki Wilchins documenting the struggle of transgender activism titled Burn the Binary! Select Writings on the Politics of Being Trans Genderqueer and Nonbinary.

Her incredible journey for fighting for transgender rights led Riki to author four books on genderqueer, transgender politics and queer theory. She has been a pioneer, influential thinker and writer for a quarter of a century. This single volume offers a selection of Riki’s most penetrating and insightful pieces, as well as the best of two decades of Riki’s online columns for The Advocate. Her pieces have reached millions of readers and included groundbreaking pieces like I have been told I’m no longer transsexual, Schlumpy White Guys, and the extremely successful essay Transexual Dinosaurs .

The cover features a unique portrait of Riki from artist Blake Chamberlain, a painter and trans man. The painting was originally a part of a grant based portrait series called “Trans American History,“ which featured ten American Trans activists. Riki was chosen as one of the ten due to her leadership and writings that created trans awareness, advancement, and inclusion.

“Riki Wilchins has been an important and powerfully consistent voice for transgender rights for a very long time,” said Publisher Lori Perkins. ”This collection shows that journey in an eloquent way."

In Love with Amorous Congress (Guest Post by F. Leonora Solomon)

Amorous Congress is my third anthology with Riverdale Avenue Books (preceded by the award-winning Tie Me Up and Bases Loaded). As an editor, I have published over a dozen anthologies, but the just published feeling is something that I can never get over–the feeling is close to orgasmic! Anthologies are special, you get several authors giving you their take on the theme–and in my case their erotic take on the theme. A hard, but layered with pleasure job, to go through all of them to find the creme de la creme for you!

I wanted to do this anthology, because at the time I was very obsessed with the dearly departed Museum of Morbid Anatomy in Brooklyn, New York. Repeated visits there, filled me with a sensualism that I was not expecting and that kept me enthralled. The Victorian era was very sensual–even with its intimate observation of death. I had gone to the Met at this time as well, and saw their exhibition Death Becomes Her which focused on the Victorian-era fashions for widows. I even felt that the mourning ritual was sensual, which was solidified by getting to speak to one of the Met curators at Morbid Anatomy who confirmed this.

Or maybe I just feel everything is sensual?!

But seeing what had been going on at that time, I wanted to focus a bit more on it, and the idea for Amorous Congress was born–since erotica is my thing. The stories I got, were more varied than I ever expected. They are contemporary, steampunk and historical erotica–including a rewrite of a character from a period classic. Every story in Amorous Congress is sensual, and left me breathless. I am a seasoned pro, but good erotica does that to you!

I wanted the cover to be special too, so I asked my friend and graphic artist extraordinaire Oleander Plume to design the cover for me. She did an AMAZING job! Yes, you have to judge this book by its cover! It is my most photographed cover ever, and it is worth it. The cover is amazing–worthy of the period–and the inside will blow you away! There is nothing dusty or stodgy about this collection, the period if nothing else makes the stories even more sensual…

I know you are drooling over the cover! Go get your own copy to drool over here in bed!

FREE Preview of Watergate Book on 43rd Anniversary of Nixon's Resignation

“Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Watergate *But Were Afraid to Ask” Published for the 43rd Anniversary of Richard Nixon Resignation by Riverdale Avenue Books

- Free Chapters of the Book Available on August 8th, New Book will be Released on August 14th -

New York, NY - August 8th, 2017 - The innovative hybrid publisher, Riverdale Avenue Books is releasing Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Watergate *But Were Afraid to Ask by Brian J. O’Connor and Lori Perkins on August 14th. Select chapters will be available for free to read on RiverdaleAveBooks.com on August 8th, the 43rd anniversary of Richard Nixon’s resigning from office.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Watergate *But Were Afraid to Ask goes against the grain. In today’s newsfeed, the Watergate story is usually told from the perspective of straight, white male journalists and politicians who were at the center of the scandal—but Watergate happened to all of us – wives, mothers, children, black, white, queer, immigrants. Those voices and perceptions are rarely heard, until now. The book includes several exclusive interviews including Rep. Charles Rangel, the African American junior Representative on the House Judiciary Committee.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Watergate *But Were Afraid to Ask looks at the wider ripples of the Watergate explosion and how it changed the way Americans saw themselves, their country and the world around them using a humor reminiscent of the Daily Show including witty, yet informative chapters such as How Watergate is Taught Today; Game of Quotes - Nixon or Trump; and Food for Thought, which offers actual recipes from Pat Nixon and the oddly-named pistachio-flavored Watergate salad.

“Events in Washington make the issues raised in Watergate so current, that we felt it was important to quickly put together a book to show how deeply Watergate has influenced the culture, from phrases such as ‘the smoking gun’ that are part of the political lexicon to the books and movies inspired by this major turning point in American history.” said Author Brian O’Connor. “ We also found some interesting parallels between Trump and Nixon, and some disturbing trivia that includes meatloaf as an indicator of presidential fitness.”

Author and Publisher Lori Perkins added, “This is the one book to read if you never know what to say when people start talking about politics. It’s chock full of Watergate facts, both serious and frivolous, that will make you seem like a real Watergate aficionado and shut anyone else up.”

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Watergate *but Were Afraid to Ask is both a serious, and irreverent book, put together by a team of two newspaper journalists and ten college interns from throughout the country.
