Importance of Emphasizing Digital Citizenship

Today was the last day to turn in assignments for seniors at my school and I was reading one of the final portfolios and was reminded how important teaching digital citizenship is and stressing the importance of helping students know what kinds of pictures to post and kinds not to post.

We know about sexting incidents and adults do this as well as teens. Critical thinking of consequences of posting such items, pictures, posts, etc. isn’t exercised when inappropriate things are posted. It is common knowledge that colleges and employers regularly google candidates and visit social media sites looking to see the types of things the student/candidate has posted for the world to see.

While grading, the student mentioned a mother would take a picture of her child and post to Facebook while a teenager would post a picture to Instagram. Teens are moving to social media venues that are harder to be monitored and viewed by parents. This opens the door to inappropriate postings, cyberbullying, catfishing and meeting up with unknown people. Teens don’t think things through before they post and that is where we must be vigilant in our teachings and modeling what we post. The student whose paper I was grading gave a perfect example that students are leaving Facebook and opting for Snapchat, Kik or any number of social media apps to meet and interact with people. While this student’s examples were appropriate for the assignment and very innocuous, it reminded me that teens have made the move away from Facebook at parents and adults ‘have taken over’ the site. That is why students and parents must communicate and have mutual trust in order to help curb pictures that shouldn’t be posted or shared.

What steps do you take with your students in your classroom and conversations do you have to prevent student creating a negative digital footprint? Let’s discuss this in our comments and share ways to help protect our students.

San Antonio’s Hi-Tech High to Open Fall 2017

I am proud to announce that a hometown school district, San Antonio ISD, is opening a hi-tech high school. The official announcement was made on the district’s website. The curriculum will be ‘new tech’ based. What is new tech you ask? Well, according to SAISD, new tech is, “teams of students working in a 1:1 student to computer environment, researching, communicating and solving real problems in our community”. This concept may be new to the high school but is not a new concept in curriculum around the globe. 1 to 1, or 1:1, is not a new concept but in my opinion a definite welcome concept for the new hi-tech high school.

I am really excited what this type of learning environment holds for the new high school’s students. Students will learn coding, video editing, and a host of new skills from problem based learning activities.

According to SAISD.net,

New Tech High Schools are an educational experience unlike anything else available at the high school level. Since the first New Tech High School was created in Napa, California, in 1996, over 60 New Tech schools have sprung up across the United States. And now one is coming to South Texas and San Antonio ISD.

New Tech is a high school where subjects are integrated, students work in teams and learning is project based – all in a technology-rich environment. New Tech High Schools meet or exceed state standards and have an intense focus on developing students’ 21st century skills including oral and written communication, critical thinking, work ethic, collaboration, problem solving, creativity and presentation skills.

Why New Tech?

Teams of students work in a 1:1 student to computer environment, researching, communicating and solving real problems in our community.
Project based learning brings relevance to learning
Collaborative approach prepares students to succeed in life, college and the careers of tomorrow.

This is so exciting to hear and I am thrilled for the 250 students that will get to attend the high school in the fall. The courses will be project based learning. What is project based learning. SAISD is defining project based learning in a very innovative learning and teaching style.

What is Project-Based Learning?

Project-based learning (PBL) uses the latest technology and inquiry to engage students with issues and questions that are relevant to their lives. In New Tech classrooms, teachers design rigorous projects tied to state and district standards and customize them to real world applications and the interests of the learners.  Students then work in teams to acquire and apply knowledge and skills to solve problems. For example, English and Social Studies classes can be integrated so that both groups are learning the same content in a team teaching environment.

With access to Web-enabled computers and the latest in collaborative learning technology, every student becomes a self-directed learner who no longer needs to rely primarily on teachers or textbooks for knowledge and direction. We use an online learning management system to create a vibrant network which helps students, teachers, and parents connect to each other, and to student projects, in San Antonio and across the country.

The school will be at the existing Sam Houston High School. Hopefully, this hi-tech high school will revolutionize and revitalize the existing teaching and enrich the current student body when they see the exciting things happening at the hi-tech high school.

The new school will accept applications from all school districts and schools in San Antonio. If you know of students that should apply, they can complete the application here: http://nova.saisd.net/storage/uploads/Houston006/New%20Tech%20Membership%20Information%20Sheet.

Good luck to all who apply and congrats to those who are selected to attend this prestigious magnet school at Sam Houston HS!
