One Of The Most Important Writing Lessons I Ever Got

When my mom got engaged to my stepfather, Don McNay, he wrote an article about it on the huffington post. You can read the original article right here.  Don & Karen McNay: The Saga of Our Engagement. It is one of the funniest and heartwarming pieces of writing I have ever read.

One night, Don, my mom, my brothers, and my grandparents were all eating out at the Cracker Barrel. We ended up talking to the waitress about weddings since she and my mom both just got engaged. I told her about Don’s article that he wrote, and my Memaw was actually carrying a printed copy in her purse at the time. She gave it to the waitress, who loved reading it so much that she passed it to another couple that she was waiting on.

In that moment, I learned what kind of power writing could have. To create something so moving and so touching that people felt the desire to pass it to someone so that they can feel the same thing. In a world that is often so cynical to the point that many people feel the need to question if joy is even truly possible to feel, there can be no greater power or responsibility as a writer then to create stories that not only fuel people with happiness, but can also cause a desire for other to spread that happiness to even more people

It is one of the greatest lessons I ever learned on my journey to be a writer, and one of many things I will miss about my stepfather, who lived the way he wrote stories. Always trying to help others and ready to laugh with joy.  I shall never forget him.

Top Seven Mothers From Pop Culture

Happy Mother’s Day! The day where we all honor mothers who have had to put up with us kids because they were curse by their own parents to have children just like them. Yay! So to honor that day we are counted down the top seven mothers from pop culture. There would be more, but sadly moms often seem to exist in pop culture just to die and with no insight into their personalities, stories, or even given proper flash backs. This list is not in any real order. Just make sure you read to the bottom for a special notice.

Molly Weasley from Harry Potter–  Molly Weasley is a kickass mom who made great food and fought evil crazy psychopathic witches. I still remember reading the section where she goes “not my daughter you bitch.” We pretty much knew Bellatrix was dead from that moment on. It’s not just Mrs. Weasley’s magical skills that are so awesome. It is her love and support that she gives to others especially to Harry who never got to know his own mother. That is what makes her truly awesome.

Kyoko Honda from Fruits Basket – Unlike a lot of mothers who die before the story begins, we actually get to know Kyoko Honda through flashbacks and how characters were changed by her. We see her struggles when she was in middle school with her parents who didn’t love her, being in a gang, the tragedy of her missing her high school entrance exam, her marriage to Tohru’s father, dealing with her husband’s death, and how she passed everything she learned to others.  This is a mother who struggled all her life, but still had a smile on her

Bellmere from One Piece-  Bellmere maybe one of the most badass mothers on this list. After a horrible fight when she was a Marine she finds two orphan girls who survived the destruction. When she decided to become their mother there was no turning back. If that meant going a few days without food, she did it. If that meant dying for her kids she did it. Bellmere is one powerful mom.

Junko Kaname from Puella Magi Magi Madoka Magica–  Out of all the moms on the list this one is probably the closest to my own mother. She is a take charge woman working hard in the work force and you can see how she passes that strength on to Monaka. The talks she was with Monaka I always felt were realistic to the ones I had with my own mother so I can’t help, but put her on this list.

Joyce Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer- I think Joyce Summers is the most flawed mother on this list. It took her awhile to realize her daughter was a vampire slayer, and there was a tension from that. However, it obvious that Joyce loves both her daughters, Buffy and Dawn. Even after figuring out that Dawn was actually a magical key that could open another dimension and destroy the world by doing it.  This show is so awesome!

Sarah Jane Smith from The Adventures of Sarah Jane Smith and Doctor Who-  Sarah Jane is rather unique on this list as she didn’t start out as a mom to anyone when she first appeared on Doctor Who.  We all knew her as one the greatest companions of the Doctor. So natural she was cool mother. How many other mothers could stand up to alien clowns who steal children?

Bianca Reyes from Blue Beetle-  Mrs. Reyes is another rather unique to this list because she is one of few moms of a teenage superhero who knows their son is a super hero. She not afraid to stand up to anyone to protect her family whether they are evil aliens or crazy green lanterns. This is one mom you don’t want to piss off.

And of course a top mother’s list would be complete without the greatest mother of them all. MY OWN MOM! Yes, my mom is the best mom ever. She has all the best qualities of these moms on this list and then some. There is only one woman in the world who could handle raising me not mention my brothers. (Though I still maintain to this day that my drawing on the walls made them prettier.)  My mom takes everything life throws at her and sends it back at the world while adding fire. Not only I’m celebrating Mother’s Day with my mom today, but also her becoming a Doctor of Education. There is no one else in the world that I would rather have as my mother.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY MOM!
