Shadows of Time by Valerie Massey Goree
My new romantic suspense novel, Shadows of Time, released recently. Here are backstories for my main characters. Hope you enjoy these insights into what makes them ‘tick’.
Annika Louise Knight:
I just received word from my late mother’s lawyer that I need to travel to Seattle for the reading of the will. I am not looking forward to the meeting.
Mother and I have been estranged most of my life. I always felt like I was not smart enough or sophisticated enough for her. She never said in so many words, but I think sometimes she wondered if I was really her daughter. Well, she ought to know, right?
My beloved father passed away when I was six. I still miss him, but I remember he told me one day that Mother kept secrets. Am I about to discover those secrets? Sure, my parents had a beautiful mansion on Bainbridge Island, Mother paid for my college tuition, and Papa left me money which I used to fund my art school. They were well-off, but I doubt there’s anything else of importance in the will. The lawyer didn’t say anyone else would be there, but as an only child, I may be the sole guest.
When I received the news of Mother’s passing, I was sad because we were never close. We never shared the mother/daughter bond so many of my friends talked about. Mother never let me into her world of science and research, and I was hesitant to share my love of art with her. When I was eleven years old, I had a run-in with the authorities and spent time in juvie. I don’t think Mother ever forgave me for besmirching the family name.
I’m not a famous artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I have sold enough paintings to help fund my art institute, and I’m sorry Mother never witnessed my skills. Would she have been impressed? I doubt it. She never let me forget that I wouldn’t have made it in the scientific world. Okay, Mother. Tomorrow I’ll know your secrets.
Cullen Kincaid:
I closed my guitar case and let out a deep breath. The kids from the Firs Trees Preschool gathered around me and begged for another song. We’d already spent fifteen minutes singing together and they’d tired me out. Their teacher called them to her and everyone waved to me as I left the classroom. What a fun way to conclude a job. Once on my Harley, I strapped on my helmet and headed to the gym.
My tech skills often result in positive outcomes, for which I give thanks to the Lord. One of the students from a wealthy Port Townsend family had been kidnapped, the ransom call demanded no police involvement. The father and I are friends, and he asked for my help. By using back channels and little-known websites, I was able to trace the origin of the call, and twenty-four hours after the abduction, had the child safely back home. No cops. No ransom paid. No harm done. The kid singing with his classmates.
Since living on the Olympic Peninsula, I’d helped a number of people, and along with preaching on Sundays, it’s one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. Several lawyers in town ask for my expertise to aid their clients. One guy in particular loves when he can send me a ‘damsel in distress’. He says one day the damsel will prove to be the perfect match for me. Dream on, Jerome.
Bio:
American Christian Fiction Writers Genesis Award winner Valerie Massey Goree resides in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, northwest of San Antonio.
She was born in South Africa and grew up in Rhodesia—now Zimbabwe. Valerie came to the USA to attend a Christian university with the desire to obtain a degree and return to Central Africa to teach.
She met her husband, Glenn, at university, and after they married, they served as missionaries in Rhodesia for six years. Their two children were born there. When the family returned to Texas, Glenn served as a pastor and counselor, and Valerie began her teaching career. She served 25 years in the public school arena, focusing on children with special needs, and often includes a child with special needs in her novels.
Now retired and widowed, she spends her time writing, reading, traveling, and spoiling her grandchildren.

What was the spark for the series idea?
People often ask if my books are autobiographical. They are and they aren’t. All writers draw from their life experiences. Mine are woven into all my books.
The story idea for the PROMISES series came from my time as a Department of Army Civilian (DAC) at Eighth Army Headquarters, Yongsan, South Korea.
My fifteen-month-old daughter and I had followed my First Lieutenant husband on his unaccompanied tour to South Korea during the Vietnam War.
Part of my duties included secretarial work for President Lyndon Johnson’s top-secret visit to South Korea during his 1966 Southeast Asia tour. That became the writer’s tool I used to bring Lily and Major Ace Cabot together in the first two books.
Places and events from my time in South Korea also appear in Love in the Morning Calm, Book. We live where Lily lived high above the Han River in Han Nam Dong’s U.N. Village, Chungpyung Reservoir, and the Presidential Reception held at Walker Hill like the one in the story are scenes from my time there. And three was a gold dress like the one Lily wears to the event.
In The Pendant’s Promise, Book 2 of the series, Lily lives in Tennessee and has a job at the Atomic Energy Commission. That’s semi-autobiographical. We lived in Virginia, Alex’s home state.
The last two books, chronicle David and Shirley’s story, Until He Returns and Promises to Keep. Alex and Lily play a major role in both stories.
I hope you enjoy reading The Promises Series. The series blends history and happily ever after. You can read one or all. Each book is a standalone story. Including parts of my life in the stories made writing all the Promises Series books fun. I got to relive some treasured memories.

Unintended Hero by Becky Van Vleet
Unintended Hero
As a baby boomer, I grew up in a household hearing stories from my parents about the Great Depression and WWII. I don’t recall being all that interested as a youngster, yet I never forgot the firsthand stories my parents shared. Fast forward a few years, and I marry a baby boomer, who also recalled similar stories. As an educator with four children, the call to preserve these stories in some fashion or form came to me. Not knowing how long our parents would live to share their firsthand accounts with our children, I decided I’d better not let the stories perish in oblivion.
I’d always been fascinated with my father’s stories he shared about the USS Denver, the light cruiser he was a gunner on in the South Pacific in WWII. So I whipped out my dated cassette recorder on March 19, 1990, corralled my father to our kitchen table, and asked him to recount his WWII adventures, experiences, and battles so I could save his stories for our children, his grandchildren.
For the next two hours, his stories tumbled out with pride and a remarkable remembrance. I sat spellbound, taking it all in. At the time, my plan was to simply save the cassettes as historical keepsakes for my family.
Fast forward again, thirty years later. Covid hits, and I’m homebound with a worldwide shutdown. My children are grown up with children of their own. Time is on my hands. Another call to write a book to preserve my father’s WWII stories came loud and clear.
Google and search engines became my friends, working in tandem with my fingers on my keyboard. I had a big puzzle on my hands to fit all the pieces together—my dad’s stories on the cassettes, the USS Denver deck logs, tedious research for the whole Pacific Theater for WWII, researching ammunition and guns (remember I said my father was a gunner), all the battles, hundreds of other Navy ships, and the . . . well, I had a lot of pieces to fit together to formulate a story. And a well-written story. I wouldn’t settle for less than the best. This was a story, after all, about my father. He was no longer living, and my book must honor not only him, but the other sixteen million Americans who also answered the call of duty to fight for our country. They had sacrificed school, jobs, families, homes, personal aspirations, and their very lives. My book would represent them as well.
Tap, tap, tap. My fingers flew over my keyboard faster than armor piercing shells flying from WWII battleships for more than a year as a manuscript immerged.Help came from everywhere–my husband, editors, WWII veterans, and friends. Family cheered me on.
Unintended Hero, my debut historical novel, finally made an inaugural appearance on Amazon in August, 2022. For Julie’s readers, if you know of any WWII buffs in your circle, or, if you have young people in your circle who could benefit from a good story about patriotism, sacrifice for a cause beyond self, and teamwork for America, I’d like to recommend this book to you. This is not about self-promotion nor sales. That was never my intention when I set out to write my father’s story. This book is about preserving a firsthand story from Walter Troyan, my father, who came from The Greatest Generation, to use Tom Brokaw’s term. A story about sacrifice and freedom which impersonates Thomas Paine’s “The American Crisis” which he wrote in 1776.

Book Review: Innocence Denied by Mike Garrett

Julie’s Review:
This is an intriguing story about murder, being on the run, and redemption of the soul. Larissa is accused of killing her husband, a crime she didn’t commit. His family is well-connected, and Larissa is on the run.
She meets Derrick, and he not only protects her, he works on saving her soul. Can he keep her safe and help her choose life for eternity?
I love the premise, and I think male readers will especially enjoy this book. Although it started a little slow for me, the author is great at making you feel you are right in the action. I’d like to see a little more layering of the characters, but still, I absolutely could feel the tension Derrick and Larissa were under.

The biggest challenge to today’s Christian fiction authors is not getting published,
but is selling published books.
WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU ABOUT MARKETING YOUR OWN BOOKS?
Well, when my first novel was traditionally published over thirty years ago, it was available everywhere—supermarkets, drug stores, and of course, book stores. Today’s writers can’t get that kind of distribution unless they’re already best-selling authors. My first Christian novel published three years ago received high critical acclaim and was an American Fiction Award finalist, yet it didn’t help sell the book. I’m as baffled as anyone else as to selling books in 2022. How do we let potential readers know that our books exist?
WHERE DO YOU THINK CHRISTIAN READERS FIND THEIR FICTION?
That’s the million dollar question. Book stores, both Christian and secular, stock only best-selling authors these days. It’s virtually impossible to get a book on their shelves if you’re a newcomer, so I guess the even bigger question is how do Christian readers discover new authors? I’m hoping that part of the answer is finding them online on sites such as mine through Google searches. Hopefully, similar websites will be developed to help readers discover new talent.
WHAT ROLE DOES AMAZON PLAY IN SELLING OUR BOOKS?
Obviously, Amazon is a huge resource, but most new authors grossly overestimate its potential in selling books. With the millions of books available on Amazon, how likely is it for a reader to stumble across yours? Don’t hold your breath. Unless very specific search terms are used, it just won’t happen. The only way readers will find our books on Amazon is if they already know it’s there, thus the importance of making potential readers aware that our books exist, then refer them to Amazon.
SO THEN WHY IS AMAZON SO IMPORTANT?
It’s the easiest place to tell readers where to buy our books. Plus, I think it adds credibility to our books in the eyes of potential readers. An Amazon presence seems to legitimize our books.
DO YOU THINK READER REVIEWS ON AMAZON ARE IMPORTANT TO BOOK BUYERS?
I can only speak for myself, but I place a lot of confidence in reader reviews. I won’t read anything that has less than four star reviews. The ratings are not infallible, though. I’ve read best-selling novels that I thought were awful.
DO YOU THINK REVIEWS SHOULD REHASH THE STORYLINE?
My preference is no. Potential buyers can get that from Amazon. I think reviews should be brief and merely point out what works and doesn’t work in the book. For my own novels, I like to extract quotes from reviews for my website. Also, it’s easier to get someone to write a review if you don’t expect a long one. For my tastes, some of the best reviews are one-liners.
ARE BOOK REVIEWS IMPORTANT TO SALES?
I think so, but asking someone to review your book is a huge imposition on their time. It takes hours and hours to read a book, then write a review. Then there’s that agonizing wait for the results. I’m reluctant to ask someone to devote that much time and energy.
DO YOU HAVE A SOLUTION?
Actually, I do. I’ve developed a quick and easy way to get numerous reviews posted on our Amazon listings without imposing on anyone, and I’ll share it with other authors soon. We’ve just got to work together to make it happen.
HOW WILL YOU LET US KNOW?
I’m reluctant to publish it for the world to see, so I’ll explain it via private email to interested authors who contact me and are willing to participate. When the time is right, I’ll call for serious inquiries on Twitter, so for those of you reading this, if you want to get multiple reviews posted on your Amazon listings quickly, watch my Twitter feeds and let’s start interacting. This is a an excellent example of how Christian authors should support each other.

Here with us today is Michael Garrett, who holds the distinction of having been Stephen King’s first editor and publisher. Michael is also an internationally published author who hopes to bring Christian authors together to promote each other.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR OWN PUBLISHING EXPERIENCES.
I have two traditionally published novels with another on the way. I’ve also independently published three books, so I’m well acquainted with both traditional publishing as well as self-publication.
WHY DO YOU FEEL THAT AUTHORS SHOULD PROMOTE EACH OTHER?
Because we’re not competitors. Anyone who encourages readers to buy books is an ally, not a competitor. As creatives, we should admire and inspire each other, as in the music industry. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the two biggest bands of all time, could often be heard in each other’s songs. We should be fans of our peers.
DO YOU CARE TO ELABORATE?
Sure. Readers are always on the lookout for new authors. Likewise, no reader settles on just one author to the exclusion of all others. Readers limit themselves to certain genres, not authors. If a reader in your genre doesn’t select your book today, perhaps he/she will tomorrow.

I originally started christiansuspensenovels.com to promote my own books, but quickly realized that my novels could receive more attention if promoted as part of a group. Being surrounded by other similar books lends more credibility to them all.
IS THE SITE LIMITED TO CHRISTIAN SUSPENSE NOVELS ALONE?
Yes, the site is, but its Twitter account, @SuspenseWriters, is open to all Christian genres. It’s where I hope authors will exchange ideas and connect with each other.
IS THERE A CHARGE FOR A SUSPENSE NOVEL TO BE FEATURED ON THE SITE?
Absolutely not. There’s limited space available, but if a suspense novel has received decent reviews, I will seriously consider adding it.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH?
As my Twitter profile states, the biggest challenge to today’s Christian fiction authors is not getting published, but is selling published books. This is true whether you’re traditionally published or independently published. Making your reading audience aware that your novel exists is extremely challenging. They can’t buy it if they don’t know it’s there. Perhaps if we put our heads together, we can find ways to help our readers find us.
WHY DO YOU FEEL CHRISTIAN AUTHORS SHOULD SUPPORT EACH OTHER?
Well, first of all, the mission of Christian authors is to spread the Word through wholesome entertainment. We should be willing to help each other accomplish this as a service to our Savior, who gave us these skills in the first place. And second, we can learn from each other. Every writer shouldn’t be forced to re-invent the wheel when it comes to marketing. Through positive dialogue, we can learn from each other what works and what doesn’t when it comes to selling books. It’s all about sharing.
