Christmas in Northern Hearts by Laurie Wood

Christmas in Northern Hearts

By Laurie Wood

Northern Hearts (Heroes of the Tundra Book 2) is my Christmas novella set in the real-life town of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. It’s called the Polar Bear Capitol of the World. I set my entire series there, and my husband and I flew up in 2019 so that I could do proper research on the town and its polar bear research facilities.

I set this story during the Christmas in between Northern Deception (Book 1) and Northern Protector (Book 3). The inspiration for the story came to me out of the blue—I love it when my brain and creativity strikes like that—because I was thinking about family situations and secrets.

I had the vision of a rich young woman with every advantage she could have in her life, but still yearning for more. And her family held a long, dark secret in the past. She’s about to find out about a family member she had never known existed before, and how that person had been following her life from afar.

The hero is the opposite. He’s grown up without a proper family in the foster care system and the unknown family member of the heroine has been a stand-in mother figure for him. When the hero and heroine meet and are forced to work together for thirty days to meet the legal requirements of the family member’s will, they have to examine what their relationships mean to them and learn to work together.

Being a romance, they will fall in love, but I include some real-life festivities that take place in Churchill, and some traditions that I wish I’d done myself over the years. I believe that family traditions keep memories alive and serve the purpose of keeping families intact, especially when children are young and growing up. Once they’re grown up, some traditions need to change to facilitate the changes in the family make-up, for example, adult children marrying and the “family” enlarging.

Like the Sabbath being made for man, not man for the Sabbath, as Jesus taught us, I think that family traditions like every person being present at Christmas dinner when that may not be feasible, need to be looked at in the light of love and common sense. Christmas dinners may need to be done rotationally. Traditions may need to grow and change as the years go by.

That doesn’t mean that our Christmas excitement and celebrations of our one true King shouldn’t take place or be enjoyed. They just may look different from year to year, and that’s all right. The true meaning of Christmas is that Jesus is the Light of the World and our Saviour. I wish you all a blessed Christmas!

A Common Girl, An Uncommon Time by Jane Carlile Baker

A Common Girl, An Uncommon Time

Adapted from Luke 1:5-2:19

Journey One

After a long walk from Nazareth with Daniel’s family, finally Elizabeth’s shaky soprano drifted over her wall, her words from a psalm of David Mary recognized. “You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.” The swish of her broom kept time to her song. She had waited so long, no wonder her joy.

Mary tapped at the gate with one hand. The other caressed the cotton tunic over her stomach. Would her elder cousin  understand her confusion? “Elizabeth, it’s me.”

Elizabeth’s singing stopped. She opened the gate. Her silver hair escaped the veil that covered her wrinkled head and belied the obvious bump under her clothing.

“Mary!” Elizabeth’s hand flew to her own womb and her eyes bulged. “Our little John recognizes the mother of our Messiah, the tiny One you carry!” She hugged Mary and kissed her cheek.

“The angel said you’d understand God’s moving among us. … I only wanted to marry Joseph and raise a big family with my carpenter. And now … ”

“Have you told Joseph?”

“He didn’t call for the elders to stone me. He said, ‘We’ll just call it off.’

And I couldn’t … I came to you. The angel said I’m favored, but I feel … favored … and not favored, all at once.” She searched Elizabeth’s eyes for understanding.

And got it. “Dear girl, come in. You look pale. Tea and cakes will revive you. Gabriel spoke to Zechariah too, to tell him about John. You must have responded with faith. Zechariah questioned Gabriel and can’t speak now.” Elizabeth smiled, but then shook her head.

Mary accepted tea, and they relaxed in the courtyard. “Yes, suddenly Gabriel stood there in the room with me.

“He’s not a little fellow.

“I could barely manage to accept his assignment. There’s no evidence I should mother the Messiah. Why me, out of all the girls in Nazareth? Anyway, I asked him one question. How? I really am a virgin, Elizabeth.

”And yet, my womb warmed with life when God moved over me. I know Jesus grows inside me. I know, and yet I am … I don’t know how to do this.”

Elizabeth waited.

“Will my father disown me? My mother insisted I come to you because of what Gabriel said, but her skeptical look broke my heart. What will the townspeople say? I don’t want to return to Nazareth. I’m glad Gabriel told me about you. But … ”

Elizabeth cupped Mary’s arm. “Dear girl, you needn’t know how to do this. I know for certain our God guides us who live in faith. You need only put one foot in front of the other in the direction He leads.”

Tension left Mary in the light of Elizabeth’s words. “Could I stay with you for a while? Could you talk with me about Jesus and John? Please?”

“Of course, for as long as you need. A visit will shorten the time of my waiting.”

Mary stayed three months, gaining courage for what lay ahead and strengthening her faith. After she kissed Elizabeth goodbye, Mary looked to heaven and said, “The Lord has looked with favor on the humble estate of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name.” And yet, in this generation, not everyone thinks me blessed. She took home with her all the wisdom Elizabeth had shared before it was time to bring John into the world.

Look for the rest of the story later this month.

Christmas Season Must-Watch List by Karin Beery

Christmas Season Must-Watch List by Karin Beery

I love the holiday season. It’s not just Christmas—it’s the love, anticipation, grace, and thankfulness that fills our house every November, December, and January. I start decorating the first weekend of November, and I have to pace myself when it comes to wrapping presents, donating gifts, and baking (and baking and baking) so I don’t do it all in one week.

While I’m doing all of those things, I always have a Christmas movie playing in the background.

Though I enjoy Hallmark holiday movies, I can’t watch them while I work—it’s too easy to get sucked into the plot and stop working! Instead, I have my Must-Watch List of traditional and nontraditional movies. They’re perfect for the season without being too distracting (because I’ve seen each one a dozen times!).

Christmas movies became a staple in my life when I was single because I often felt lonely in my apartment by myself. Even though I’m married now, we’re a childless couple. We spend Thanksgiving or Christmas with my family, but the other holiday is spent at home with each other. I love my husband, but our small family lacks the craziness I grew up with having two sisters with less than four years between all of us. I didn’t appreciate it at the time, but now I crave the familiar coziness of it all.

Though I’d rather be with family, these holiday movies set the mood, and because I’ve seen them so many times, it makes it feel like the house is full of friends. I can’t wait to watch them again this year!

Here’s my list of Must-Watch holiday flicks.

Traditional:

White Christmas
The Santa Clause
(1, 2, and 3)
The Holiday
Elf
Holiday Inn
The Man Who Invented Christmas

Nontraditional:

Little Women (1994)
Die Hard (1 & 2)
While You Were Sleeping

I’ll also usually watch Home Alone and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, but those are really for my husband, not so much for me.

What about you—are you a fan of Christmas movies? Which is your favorite?

(Movies aren’t the only tradition at our house— click here for the easy-to-make recipes for my husband’s two favorite holiday treats !)

Author of hopeful fiction with a healthy dose of romance, Karin Beery also owns Write Now Editing, helping authors turn good manuscripts into great books.  She lives in northern Michigan with her husband and pets. They drink too much (decaf) coffee, put up their Christmas tree the first weekend in November, and do their best to live every day for the Lord.

Shadows of Time by Valerie Massey Goree

My new romantic suspense novel, Shadows of Time, released recently. Here are backstories for my main characters. Hope you enjoy these insights into what makes them ‘tick’.

Annika Louise Knight:

I just received word from my late mother’s lawyer that I need to travel to Seattle for the reading of the will. I am not looking forward to the meeting.

Mother and I have been estranged most of my life. I always felt like I was not smart enough or sophisticated enough for her. She never said in so many words, but I think sometimes she wondered if I was really her daughter. Well, she ought to know, right?

My beloved father passed away when I was six. I still miss him, but I remember he told me one day that Mother kept secrets. Am I about to discover those secrets? Sure, my parents had a beautiful mansion on Bainbridge Island, Mother paid for my college tuition, and Papa left me money which I used to fund my art school. They were well-off, but I doubt there’s anything else of importance in the will. The lawyer didn’t say anyone else would be there, but as an only child, I may be the sole guest.

When I received the news of Mother’s passing, I was sad because we were never close. We never shared the mother/daughter bond so many of my friends talked about. Mother never let me into her world of science and research, and I was hesitant to share my love of art with her. When I was eleven years old, I had a run-in with the authorities and spent time in juvie. I don’t think Mother ever forgave me for besmirching the family name.

I’m not a famous artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I have sold enough paintings to help fund my art institute, and I’m sorry Mother never witnessed my skills. Would she have been impressed? I doubt it. She never let me forget that I wouldn’t have made it in the scientific world. Okay, Mother. Tomorrow I’ll know your secrets.

Cullen Kincaid:

I closed my guitar case and let out a deep breath. The kids from the Firs Trees Preschool gathered around me and begged for another song. We’d already spent fifteen minutes singing together and they’d tired me out. Their teacher called them to her and everyone waved to me as I left the classroom. What a fun way to conclude a job. Once on my Harley, I strapped on my helmet and headed to the gym.

My tech skills often result in positive outcomes, for which I give thanks to the Lord. One of the students from a wealthy Port Townsend family had been kidnapped, the ransom call demanded no police involvement. The father and I are friends, and he asked for my help. By using back channels and little-known websites, I was able to trace the origin of the call, and twenty-four hours after the abduction, had the child safely back home. No cops. No ransom paid. No harm done. The kid singing with his classmates.

Since living on the Olympic Peninsula, I’d helped a number of people, and along with preaching on Sundays, it’s one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. Several lawyers in town ask for my expertise to aid their clients. One guy in particular loves when he can send me a ‘damsel in distress’. He says one day the damsel will prove to be the perfect match for me. Dream on, Jerome.

The Promises Series by Judythe Morgan

The Behind the story of

THE PROMISES SERIES

Fate unites three people at Eighth Army Headquarters, South Korea during the turbulent Vietnam War years and their lives are irreversibly linked. Promises they make to themselves and each other bind them forever.

Book 1, Love in the Morning Calm

Book 2, The Pendant’s Promise

Book 3, Until He Returns

Book 4, Promises to Keep

What was the spark for the series idea?

People often ask if my books are autobiographical. They are and they aren’t. All writers draw from their life experiences. Mine are woven into all my books.

The story idea for the PROMISES series came from my time as a Department of Army Civilian (DAC) at Eighth Army Headquarters, Yongsan, South Korea.

My fifteen-month-old daughter and I had followed my First Lieutenant husband on his unaccompanied tour to South Korea during the Vietnam War.

Part of my duties included secretarial work for President Lyndon Johnson’s top-secret visit to South Korea during his 1966 Southeast Asia tour. That became the writer’s tool I used to bring Lily and Major Ace Cabot together in the first two books.

Places and events from my time in South Korea also appear in Love in the Morning Calm, Book. We live where Lily lived high above the Han River in Han Nam Dong’s U.N. Village, Chungpyung Reservoir, and the Presidential Reception held at Walker Hill like the one in the story are scenes from my time there. And three was a gold dress like the one Lily wears to the event.

In The Pendant’s Promise, Book 2 of the series, Lily lives in Tennessee and has a job at the Atomic Energy Commission. That’s semi-autobiographical. We lived in Virginia, Alex’s home state.

The last two books, chronicle David and Shirley’s story, Until He Returns and Promises to Keep. Alex and Lily play a major role in both stories.

I hope you enjoy reading The Promises Series. The series blends history and happily ever after. You can read one or all. Each book is a standalone story. Including parts of my life in the stories made writing all the Promises Series books fun. I got to relive some treasured memories.

BOOK BLURBS:

Book 1 Love in the Morning Calm, Prequel to The Pendant’s Promise

In 1966, while on temporary assignment to South Korea, Green Beret Major Alex Cabot meets Lily Reed at Eighth Army Headquarters. He’s a high-potential career officer, who should resist the temptation of any woman, but he can’t ignore her.

She is a firm supporter of the budding Women’s Liberation movement determined to escape her small hometown’s love-marriage-baby-carriage syndrome for a life of adventure in a civilian job for the Army. Her plans leave no room for any man. No matter how captivating his smile.

In an uncertain time, in a temporary safe zone, yielding to temptation changes both their lives forever.

Book 2 The Pendant’s Promise

When Green Beret Major Alex Cabot is classified MIA, presumed dead, Lily finds herself pregnant and alone. She fabricates a marriage and widowhood to protect her child from social stigma and begins a life of lies.

Her safe world shatters twenty years later when her daughter’s fiancé turns out to be Alex Cabot’s godson.

When they meet face-to-face again, the years melt away, the passion returns. But he believes Lily betrayed her promise to wait for him. She’s convinced revealing the truth could cost her the only man she’s ever loved and the daughter she’s lied to her live.

Can the lies be forgiven and the pendant’s promise fulfilled, or is it too late?

I’m a native Texan whose roots called me home after years of roaming as an Air Force daughter and then Army wife.

Three children, eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren along with a large, Velcro-Old English sheepdog are constantly filling my writer’s well with ideas. I find plenty of twists and turns for characters in my experiences as a Department of Army Civilian (DAC), schoolteacher, an antique dealer, a former mayor’s wife, and sometimes church pianist.

Unintended Hero by Becky Van Vleet

Unintended Hero

As a baby boomer, I grew up in a household hearing stories from my parents about the Great Depression and WWII. I don’t recall being all that interested as a youngster, yet I never forgot the firsthand stories my parents shared. Fast forward a few years, and I marry a baby boomer, who also recalled similar stories. As an educator with four children, the call to preserve these stories in some fashion or form came to me. Not knowing how long our parents would live to share their firsthand accounts with our children, I decided I’d better not let the stories perish in oblivion.

I’d always been fascinated with my father’s stories he shared about the USS Denver, the light cruiser he was a gunner on in the South Pacific in WWII. So I whipped out my dated cassette recorder on March 19, 1990, corralled my father to our kitchen table, and asked him to recount his WWII adventures, experiences, and battles so I could save his stories for our children, his grandchildren.

For the next two hours, his stories tumbled out with pride and a remarkable remembrance. I sat spellbound, taking it all in. At the time, my plan was to simply save the cassettes as historical keepsakes for my family.

Fast forward again, thirty years later. Covid hits, and I’m homebound with a worldwide shutdown. My children are grown up with children of their own. Time is on my hands. Another call to write a book to preserve my father’s WWII stories came loud and clear.

Google and search engines became my friends, working in tandem with my fingers on my keyboard. I had a big puzzle on my hands to fit all the pieces together—my dad’s stories on the cassettes, the USS Denver deck logs, tedious research for the whole Pacific Theater for WWII, researching ammunition and guns (remember I said my father was a gunner), all the battles, hundreds of other Navy ships, and the . . . well, I had a lot of pieces to fit together to formulate a story. And a well-written story. I wouldn’t settle for less than the best. This was a story, after all, about my father. He was no longer living, and my book must honor not only him, but the other sixteen million Americans who also answered the call of duty to fight for our country. They had sacrificed school, jobs, families, homes, personal aspirations, and their very lives. My book would represent them as well.

Tap, tap, tap. My fingers flew over my keyboard faster than armor piercing shells flying from WWII battleships for more than a year as a manuscript immerged.Help came from everywhere–my husband, editors, WWII veterans, and friends. Family cheered me on.

Unintended Hero, my debut historical novel, finally made an inaugural appearance on Amazon in August, 2022. For Julie’s readers, if you know of any WWII buffs in your circle, or, if you have young people in your circle who could benefit from a good story about patriotism, sacrifice for a cause beyond self, and teamwork for America, I’d like to recommend this book to you. This is not about self-promotion nor sales. That was never my intention when I set out to write my father’s story. This book is about preserving a firsthand story from Walter Troyan, my father, who came from The Greatest Generation, to use Tom Brokaw’s term. A story about sacrifice and freedom which impersonates Thomas Paine’s “The American Crisis” which he wrote in 1776.

Book Review: Innocence Denied by Mike Garrett

A PHILANDERING HUSBAND ORDERS A HIT ON HIS WIFE BUT ENDS UP DEAD HIMSELF

A murder occurs in a prominent northern Arizona family . . .
Derrick Walton is on a mission to atone for his sins, putting his own life at risk to save a woman in distress.
Larissa Baxter is a gorgeous Arizona socialite who has always relied on her striking beauty to get what she wants. After being falsely arrested for murder and posting bail, however, she faces life in prison. On the run, she must do what, to her, is the unthinkable–de-emphasize her looks to appear as average as possible and avoid undue attention.
After their paths cross, their lives take an unlikely turn when, together, they live in isolation in Alabama, and Derrick realizes that the most important rescue of all still lies ahead–saving Larissa’s soul.

Julie’s Review:

This is an intriguing story about murder, being on the run, and redemption of the soul. Larissa is accused of killing her husband, a crime she didn’t commit. His family is well-connected, and Larissa is on the run.

She meets Derrick, and he not only protects her, he works on saving her soul. Can he keep her safe and help her choose life for eternity?

I love the premise, and I think male readers will especially enjoy this book. Although it started a little slow for me, the author is great at making you feel you are right in the action. I’d like to see a little more layering of the characters, but still, I absolutely could feel the tension Derrick and Larissa were under.

Looking for a suspenseful read with soul? Why not check out Innocence Denied?

I received a copy of this book and all opinions are my own.

Fiction Finder: November 2022 New Releases

November 2022 New Releases

More in-depth descriptions of these books can be found on the ACFW Fiction Finder website

Contemporary Romance:

Authentically, Izzy
by Pepper Basham — Dear Reader, My name is Isabelle Louisa Edgewood—Izzy, for short. I live by blue-tinted mountains, where I find contentment in fresh air and books. Oh, and coffee and tea, of course. And occasionally in being accosted by the love of my family. (You’ll understand my verb choice in the phrase later.) I dream of opening my own bookstore, but my life, particularly my romantic history, has not been the stuff of fairy tales. Which is probably why my pregnant, misled, matchmaking cousin—who, really, is more like my sister—signed me up for an online dating community. But I’ve played it safe for a long time. Maybe it’s time for me to be as brave as my favorite literary heroines. Maybe it’s time to take the adventures from the page to real life. Wish me luck. (Contemporary Romance from HarperCollins Christian Publishing (Thomas Nelson and Zondervan))

Her Christmas Redemption by Toni Shiloh — Can she find a second chance…on a town’s holiday wish list? Organizing her church’s Christmas Wishes program is the perfect start to Vivian Dupre’s new life—one without the shame of her recent mistakes. But as she grows closer to co-coordinator Michael Wood, she’s even more determined to keep her past hidden. Together they can give joy to their small town. But when Michael discovers her secret, will he be willing to grant Vivian’s holiday wish—forgiveness? (Contemporary Romance from Love Inspired (Harlequin))

Like the Wind
by Robin Lee Hatcher — Olivia Ward arrived in Bethlehem Springs alone—with no job, no home, and no money—after her manipulative ex-husband used his power and wealth to destroy everything. Six years later, the peaceful life she rebuilt is once again turned upside down when she learns that her fifteen-year-old daughter, Emma, will be coming to live with her. The reunion should be a dream come true, but years of deception have driven a wedge between them. And Emma seems more interested in an old diary she discovered than reconciliation with her mother. In this latest novel from award-winning author Robin Lee Hatcher, an antique diary, a family-fueled investigation, and unexpected feelings collide to create a promise that’s worth fighting for. (Contemporary Romance from HarperCollins Christian Publishing (Thomas Nelson and Zondervan))

Muskoka Christmas by Carolyn Miller — Staci Everton is a multi-published author of historical romances, whose Christmas Eve deadline for a new book sees her leave her Chicago home to go write while staying with her grandmother in the beautiful small town of Muskoka Shores, Canada. Staci is determined to finish her manuscript, despite the small town’s Christmas charm – and Muskoka Shores most eligible bachelor. (Contemporary Romance, ACFW QIP)

Waiting on the Tides
by Tabitha Bouldin — People are more than the sum of their mistakes. After a life lived in her older brother’s shadow, Abby Solomon is ready to take on the world—or at least a teaching position that puts her face to face with the one guy who thinks she’s nothing more than an immature nuisance. When his daughter’s mother abandoned them, Christian Johnson swore off women and the trouble they bring. No wife—no drama. Just how he likes it. But as Christian struggles to juggle his job as a cop with raising his daughter and tracking down a runaway teen, he’s forced to ask the one woman who reminds him of his wife for help. Abby is thrilled with the opportunity to show Christian that there’s more to her than what he thinks. But just as Christian begins to trust Abby, she makes a colossal mistake that threatens to ruin everything. She just wanted to be accepted. He wanted to be left alone. It’ll take a runaway teen to show them that love is not measured by a single mistake. (Contemporary Romance from Celebrate Lit Publishing)

Screenwriter Rusty Noble has one goal in mind: to make moving pictures that uplift and inspire their audiences. But his thankless job at Cooperman Studios keeps him toiling away on B-grade movies.
