The Last Straw, A Review

The Last Straw: A Critical Autopsy of a galaxy far, far away The Last Straw: A Critical Autopsy of a galaxy far, far away by John C. Wright

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The review provided by Mr. John C. Wright was a much more entertaining and purposeful piece of work than was the actual film criticized (and rightly so). Like a good film, I was encouraged to openly display a wide range of emotion associated with laughter, disbelief, agreement, nostalgia, and even anger as Mr. Wright dissected the disaster that was Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi (or the last Star Wars film I'll ever watch). By the end of the book I felt sorry for the film perpetrator, as John put it, as it betrayed what must have been an awful upbringing or an acceptance of a form of atheistic nihilism which respects nothing about the history and traditions set down by Mr. Lucas. This is surprising to me especially considering that Rian and I are in the same generational cohort which, by and large, were hugely affected by the series of films he was given the opportunity to participate in, an opportunity many in the Gen X group would have sacrificed various parts of our bodies to be given. Again, Mr. Johnson's childhood must have been absolutely abysmal and/or he grew into a self-hating adult in college or something in order to have given us what he did in this film. I wish him well and pray that he finds peace in life. Then and only then and with much caution should he ever be considered to lay hands on this franchise and perhaps as an extra on the sidelines or in a stormtrooper outfit, the first to be shot in a battle with the "rebel scum." Thank you, Mr. Wright. You eloquently put into words what I saw and felt while watching this abomination of a film.

Doctor Who: The Apocalypse Element, A Review

Doctor Who: The Apocalypse Element Doctor Who: The Apocalypse Element by Stephen Cole

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another excellent installment of the Doctor Who series with the sixth, Colin Baker, and with companion Time Lady, Romana (Lalla Ward). Chibnall and company should have decided to spin off the series with a parallel Time Lady like a Romana instead of giving us what he did in the 13th on the BBC program. But THAT is another story. Much action and audio special effects to keep one engaged with good ol' English accents and grammatical usage to keep us 'colonists' on the edges of our seats. Loved the collaboration between the cast members and the over-the-top, universe-ending drama. I am looking forward to listening to the next in the series!

The Light of Eärendil

Life is filled with moments of great joy mixed with moments of terror. The Christian on his or her journey, far from a perfect creature is on the path to perfection. The consolations given by his blessed Lord encourage the follower to continue on that climb to Calvary and even should he fall, the Light of the world remains as that guide beckoning to him. There is indeed beauty in this realm of the natural but how greater the supernatural! Thus by comparison, this natural estate is indeed ugly even cruel. It is this human cruelty that prompts us to change, grow in our understanding of reality that we might conform our minds to the truth and accept what is so that we might seek out what should be thereby perfecting what is inside but only through embracing what is love, that is Christ our Redeemer, the Light of Eärendil.
