Here’s a snippet.

I’d wanted a night with him.

No, actually… I’d wanted a number of nights and I’d wanted those nights to include things like naughty touches and kisses and flesh stroking against flesh and all the things I’d read about, all the things I’d dreamed about…but the things I’d never dared to think might be mine.

But it wasn’t going to happen tonight.

Well, the kisses did.

I was practically breathless from yet another one when he pulled away abruptly, leaving me feeling like I might totter and fall, even though I sat on the couch.

Staring at the heavily muscled wall of his back, I watched as he moved to the window.

He just stood there.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

He glanced at me over his shoulder, a faint smile curling his lips. “I think you might call it…regrouping.”

I frowned.

Sean chuckled and turned toward me. “You’re an odd duck for me, Ella. I want to make sure I’m…” He paused and caught his lower lip between his teeth, sucking on it a moment before slowly releasing it. That action made me hungry to do that very same thing to him—bite his lower lip, suck on it, then let it go.

The thought was so erotic I had to clench my knees together to stem that ache that started to pulse between my thighs.

“You…ah…” I shook my head, thrown off track by my own fantasies. “You what?”

He started toward me, his movements slow and sensual. He made me think of a panther I’d once seen, all sleek, sensual menace. If he had pounced on me in that moment, I don’t think I would have minded it. Not at all.

Sean’s hand was on my waist, and I shivered as he started to stroke up, moving with almost exaggerated slowness. When the heel of his hand brushed against the curve of my breast, I felt my toes curl, and then slowly, my hands followed suit, curling into tight fists. “Are you still with me?” he asked, his breath ghosting over my skin.

“Yes.”

His face turned to mine, and this time, when he kissed me, I recognized the soft whimper as mine. He made a hungry, rougher noise deep in his throat when I opened my mouth. His tongue rubbed over mine, and a moment later, his palm cupped my breast.

My nipples, both of them, tightened into stiff, aching peaks, and I wanted nothing more than to strip away my bra. It hadn’t been this abrasive before, but now it was miserable and rough, scraping against my sensitive skin.

The kiss ended, slowly, and his hand fell away. I wanted to grab his hand, wanted to tug his mouth back to mine. But I didn’t have the courage, and a moment later, he stepped away.

“It seems to me you like being touched just fine, Your Highness.”

Frustrated desire burned inside me.

He paced away, giving me his back. I glared at him, feeling an irrational anger welling within. He detoured by the coffee table where we had eaten, fetching his mostly empty wineglass. His movements were casual, his mannerisms laid-back and confident. What I wouldn’t give to have that much self-assurance, to move through life with the sort of ease he clearly had.

The anger continued to build as he refilled his wine and tossed it back like it was some two-dollar shot of tequila. When he glanced over at me, he crooked a brow. “You haven’t given me a real answer, Ella,” he said, gesturing with his glass. “You say you don’t like being touched, and I’ve kind of gathered that idea meself, true. But just a few seconds ago, I had my hands all over you and you were wrapped around me.” He shook his head. “I don’t think you’ve as much trouble with being touched as you might think. You ought to go out and find yourself somebody who would take you out to dinner, take you dancing, take you to bed…and eventually take you to the bloody church and marry you. That’s what a woman like you looks for, Ella. A woman like you isn’t looking for a few nights with a whore.”

It wasn’t until he was dodging that I even realized what I’d done.

We stood there, the two of us, staring at the heavy glass globe from the accent table between the chair and window. I’d grabbed it and thrown it at him.

It hadn’t hit him, but it could have.

I swallowed and slowly forced myself to meet his eyes. He looked up at the same time.

I told myself to apologize. But the words that came out weren’t words of apology. “A woman like me,” I said. “You’ve no idea what kind of woman I am.”

No rest for the wicked

I finished up a side project and edits all within the past week. My brain is tired.

The Martian I haven’t had a day off in over two months. If it’s not writing, then it’s editing.

I decided today that I’d take a day off.

The monster and I went out to breakfast and then to see The Martian. It was excellent. Also, we went somewhere that had pumpkin french toast. That was also excellent.

Then we went to find him a tuxedo or a suit. Used, mind you.

Why? Well, he’s going to be Lurch for Halloween. His sisters will be Wednesday…(s). From the Addams family.

Later, I plan on going to church, then having a glass of scotch and vegging out. Tomorrow, I will dive back into work and probably start on Ruined, the next Wrecked book and work on Kit, and another short story and probably some side projects that have been keeping me busy.

Sometimes, though, have you to let your brain rest. I’m also planning on watching more of The Walking Dead (I’m a late comer there and I love it) and maybe snuggling up with my guy.

Trainwrecks, Writers and Storytellers

My kids and I were talking about writers and books and trainwrecks the other day. Trainwrecks as in the kind of books that we sometimes find ourselves reading that we keep asking ourselves…why am I reading this….

Specifically, my kids and I got to talking about trainwrecks.

Let me explain what a trainwreck is…They are the books that riddled with plotholes or characters that just don’t make sense. In romance, sometimes the hero is a total ass. I don’t mean alphahole. I mean an ass. The heroine is BEYOND TSTL. There are things tripping us up every other line.

And yet…these books can sell. And sometimes, we love them. It’s confusing. I told my kids that I think I had the answer to this figureed out and it’s pretty simple.

I think, basically, there are three kinds of writers. Now there are going to some variations and ‘subsets’, so to speak of these writers, but these are the ‘core’ types of writers. Maybe the ‘archetypes’ of the writers out there.

You’ve got trainwrecks, writers and storytellers.

trainwrecks

The trainwrecks are the ones who can produce trashy crack. It’s the why am I reading this…type of book. You can’t put it down. You might want to, you might not. Maybe it’s a ride on a rickety roller coaster and you’re loving it. Or maybe it’s just a trainwreck and you want to look away and can’t.

You might even be one of those people who love trainwrecks.

The point is, that a trainwreck book is one that you know is flawed like hell but you can’t stop reading it. Whether or not you’ll read another book by that author? Who knows. Some trainwreck authors only have a few books in them and then they just…disappear. Some keep putting out trainwrecks and sometimes the writing improves, other times it doesn’t…the characters don’t grow, the stories don’t evolve.

You love them…until you don’t.

These writers don’t know much of anything about the craft of writing. Which is fine, because we all gotta start somewhere and we tend to start out crawling.

Of course, the key here is that you gotta start to walk at some point.

They never learn to walk, per se. They don’t try to grow their craft.

Writers

Writers probably make up the biggest group. They can tell a story. That story may hold your interest, but you may or may not go back and buy more from them.

More, they tend to improve over time.

Some may be bigger names, some of them may be smaller names…some may never even get published.

But they try to grow. They either consciously or unconsciously work to improve and their stories get better.

Storytellers

These are the magicmakers. In my book, these are the people like Lynn Viehl, Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh and some of my newest favorites… Peter Clines and Marc Greaney.

They have it down and a lot of them just come by it naturally. That doesn’t mean they don’t work at it, because they absolutely do, but I think there is an inborn gift for storytelling that some people just have.

They have it…and they work. If you have that talent and then you push yourself, you create a story that is just magic.

Storytellers have that cracktastic appeal that a lot of the trainwreckers do, but they also understand the craft of writing and they work to improve.

They left crawling and walking behind a long time ago–they were probably born to fly.

These are the storytellers.

So… that was the dinner conversation a few days ago. And that was one of the more normal ones. You should hear us when we talk about things like… what if everything was made of strawberries…

Fuck, he thought miserably. Rising from the couch, he lifted a hand only to let it fall uselessly to his side. “Lizzie, I’m sorry. I didn’t—”

“I don’t want to hear it!” she shouted, cutting him off.

He had to duck to avoid the little potted orchid she sent flying his way. And damn, she still had a good throwing arm.

“Do you hear me?” she said, her voice starting to shake. “I don’t want to hear. I get it, okay? Nobody wants me. No fucking body. I’m fine as a doormat for Noel as long as I let him treat me like shit, but he doesn’t want me. Neither do you. I get it. Okay?”

Stunned shock rippled through him as she shoved her tumbled hair back from her flushed face. Her eyes shot sparks as their gazes clashed. “I get the point. You’re a fucking hound dog and I know that. But I’m not good en—”

He caught the rest of her words with his mouth and when she went to shove him back, he caught her wrists, too. Sinking his teeth into her lower lip, he backed her up against her desk. “Not want you?” he muttered against her mouth. “Are you blind?”
