Saturday Snippets…heartbreak…
Today’s bit… All about Heartbreak…
The ache in her heart threatened to break free and she almost welcomed it. She’d rather hurt, damn it. Hurt instead of feel nothing. Anything was better than nothing But lately, that was all she felt—nothing. Just emptiness. She hated that more than anything else. She’d take pain, she’d take anger over the void inside her.
Carefully, she rose from her chair and made her way over to one of the seats closer to the fireplace. They were low slung, perfect for cuddling into, perfect for reading, or in her case…brooding.
“Why didn’t you call him from the restaurant?”
Swallowing around the knot in her throat, Alexis said quietly, “I think it’s over, Mel. I really, really do.”
There was a harsh intake of breath—the only response Melissa made for a long while.
As the seconds ticked away, Alexis nursed her wine, welcoming the warmth as it spread through her body.
Over.
Did she really need to consider that it was over?
She’d felt so empty, so apart from him for so long, and he never seemed to reach out to her, but she hadn’t realized it was this bad. Not until tonight.
He hadn’t even called.
There had been a time when he’d always called, or sent her an email, texted her—something to let her know he wouldn’t be home on time. And it had happened…often. Garrett was a cop and once he’d earned his detective’s shield, those hours had only become more insane.
Nobody understood how crazy the job was better than she did. Her dad had been a cop. Two of her brothers were. She understood the job, respected it. And he’d understood that she worried, that she just wanted to know he was okay. So he kept in touch when he could while she tried not to worry. They made it work, damn it. Or they had.
But it wasn’t the job that was breaking them.
They were breaking them.
Yeah. As the tears started to burn her eyes, she whispered, “I think maybe it’s over.”
This time, Melissa spoke. “Honey…if that’s what you want…okay. But before you do anything, let me ask you something, and you need to think it through. Is that what you want?”

New release… J.C.’s first… ;)
I really should count up how many books I’ve done, but I’m too lazy.
Anyway, here’s my next…and my first. Sort of. Under a new name. It’s out today…Sexy Little Surprises, written as J.C. Daniels.
Snippet!
Meet me in Room 145.
That was what she’d written on the note she’d placed inside the envelope.
All damn day, she’d worried he might not come and now…now she was waiting. It occurred to her that he might not show up.
At least not unless she outright called him and told him who was sending him all those sexy little surprises.
Alexis was having fun, though, playing the secret admirer to her husband. They hadn’t had fun in a long while.
Not since—
“No. Not the time to think about it.” She slid off the bed and paced across the room to stare outside. The conference hotel was just down the street from the station and her room’s location was ideal. She could see him coming, if she watched. She’d asked to see the room before she reserved it and it had been just perfect.
Before that long-familiar pain could unbury itself, she focused on here. On now.
That pain would never go away, she knew that.
Closing her eyes for a moment, she rested her head on the glass. She missed that little girl…she’d missed out on finding out who she would have been, missed out on holding her. But the grief had torn a hole in her marriage and it was well past time to movebeyond this.
Stroking a hand down her white, silk chemise, she rested a hand on her belly and focused on Garrett. On her husband.
They’d forgotten themselves and that was the problem.
This time was about them. That was what the gifts were about…what the past two days had been about. For her. To have fun with him again. And yeah, he hadn’t figured out it was her, but she’d clue him in.
They could take a little while to start having fun with each other again. Rebuild their marriage, and once it was stronger, they could maybe talk about the things they’d lost…and see about building that path again.
But first…he needed to show up.

Fly-by…reminders, rambles, self pub thoughts
I’ve decided what I’m doing with my UF Blade Song…I’m doing it on my own…I saw somewhere out there that somebody thought this was my first self-published title. Ah, no. I’ve been doing these since 2009? I think? 2010?
I don’t plan on going straight self-publishing, because contrary to what some people think, it’s a lot more work with no guarantee you’ll make much money, and I know this from experience. I invest a substantial amount of money up front and although I’ve done better than some, one title didn’t even earn back the money I put into it.
The first J.C. Daniels title comes out later this week… that’s from EC and it’s called Sexy Little Surprises.
You can enter to win a copy of Blade Song. Click this link to enter…it’s not in this post. If you enter here, it’s not an entry.
I’m going to be very hit or miss, and probably for a long while. If you have a question, you might want to direct it to Nicole, because I’m barely even skimming my blog right now. I’ve got seven books that need to be written and I need to get to work.
Laughing because of the rain…
I was trying to catch up on my blog reading…it’s late Thursday/early Friday and I really ought to be in bed right now. I’m heading out for Lori Foster’s event in a few hours, although by the time this posts, it will be…um, Monday? I think?
Yeah. that’s what I’m planning. But anyway.
I was catching up on my blogging and I was skimming the blog over at The Bloggess’s blog and saw this one… It comes around…and around… it’s a lovely post. You should read it. Jenny, the Bloggess, has dealt with depression a lot in her life and she’s got a way of approaching it that’s just… there.
I’ve also dealt with depression I’ve never been as low as some people, thank God, but that knowledge that you’re not alone…it’s a good thing. Sometimes it can be the only thing.
The last few lines of this particular blog are just… beautiful. I’ll post here. But you need to go read it.
This post isn’t about depression.
It’s about laughing in spite of the rain.
It’s about laughing because of the rain.
Jenny, The Bloggess
She’s also going to be one of the few non-fiction writers I read. I’m not much into non-fiction. I’ve got enough reality in my life. But I’m reading her.

Kidlet names…
I know I’m not the only author who has nicknamed her kids. One of the reasons I did it…well, the main reason I did was because I talk about them a lot, but I prefer to protect their privacy. And Kid 1, Kid 2, Kid 3… LOL… you get the point.
My kids …bratlet. That’s the oldest. Why is she the bratlet? Because I’m the brat. Yes, she takes after me. My son is the monster…every once in a while he’s romeo, but I might have to reconsider his name. I dunno. But for now, he’s just monster. He’s a boy. He’s moving closer to that older boy age where things like shaving and growth spurts and all that crazy stuff will happen…monster is probably appropriate. Baby bratlet? The youngest. I should have named her BRATLET SQUARED. But that’s a long name.
So that’s the names for my kids.
I see some other authors out there talking about their kids and one in particular is Lauren Dane…because her ‘mini me’ stories sometimes remind me of baby bratlet stories.
I asked Lauren how mini-me got her her name…
My husband has strong genes like whoa, so my kids favor him. They’ve got his big brown eyes, his darker hair. It’s sort of a joke around here. But aside from the brown eyes, my daughter does look a whole heck of a lot like me and even without that, she’s got my personality and um, sense of personal direction. So much so that people always comment that she’s a miniature version of me. Hence, Mini Me.
Sense of personal direction. That’s such a nice way of putting things… hee hee

Saturday Snippets….from Night Blade
This is from the Colbana Files, Book 2, Night Blade… the theme is…Every Breath You Take… alphas, villains…something to take your breath away, hmmm.
Okay. Here we go.
I should have taken Chang up on his offer.
My gut knotted in nasty little tangles as I turned into my parking lot.
The light shone down on Damon’s Charger and I looked down at my phone, tried to figure out just why his home number still dialing me–
Shit. He’d programmed it. Set a trap for me, like the cagey cat he was.
Fear knocked hard against my belly as I glanced around.
Justin hadn’t called back and that just wasn’t right. Had they discovered the death of Marlowe? Immediately, I wanted to kick myself. Of course they had. Justin had already been trying to track Damon down. Damn it.
Who could have seen him out there? Other than Xavier, we hadn’t seen anybody and Xavier wasn’t going to be doing any talking.
Fear danced a wild song in my head but I shoved it down. If I faced him like this, it was all done. He’d know something was wrong and it would only be worse if I couldn’t tell him.
Parking the car, I snagged the bag and caught my blade. Everything else , I left. Hooking the strap of my bag across my torso, I started across the pavement to Damon, but I hadn’t even taken two steps before he was there, closing the rest of the distance with eerie, feline speed that left my head spinning.
“Damon, I–”
His mouth crushed mine.
And for the second time that day, all the oxygen was sucked out of the world.
But this time, it wasn’t a battle that caused it, unless you counted the way his tongue tangled with mine, the way his hands streaked across my back, jerking my shirt up and splaying across bare skin.
Thirty, wonderful seconds and then it ended as he jerked away and glared down at me. “What in the fuck, Kit–”
You can read more about the Colbana books (the first one at least…) here.

Snippets! Sexy Little Surprises
From my other half...well, percentage. (For Qs about JC, visit the FAQ page on either website.)
This comes out next Tuesday.
“I need to stir the food or we’ll be eating burnt curry.”
“Don’t care,” he whispered against her hair.
“I do. Cuz it will be a pain in the ass to clean up the dishes.” She wiggled and pressed against him, easing off the counter.
“Okay, okay.” He sighed and swatted her on the ass. “That was probably the best five minutes I’ve had in…forever. Just so you know. Sorry it was only five minutes, though.”
She grabbed a spoon and working it under the chicken, grimacing as some of it stuck. It wasn’t too bad, though. Dinner could be saved. Over her shoulder, she said, “I’m not…we can just go again after dinner.”
“Good.” He tangled a hand in her hair, tugged her head back. “Or maybe we can go ahead now and just eat it cold.”
A few breathless moments later, she pulled away from him and tugged at his hands. “Can’t. I went without lunch.” She checked the time and said, “It should only be twenty minutes. Then you can have your way with me.”
“Fine…” he groaned and rested his head on her shoulder for a second before moving away.
He lingered long enough to adjust her panties and tug her skirt down and she shivered at the feel of his hands on her thighs. She’d so very much missed having him touch her. She closed her eyes and swallowed around the ache in her throat. She’d missed a lot of things. Having him in here while she cooked dinner. Having him with her. Talking to her.
So many things.
“Maybe you can pour us some wine,” she said quietly. “And then you can give me whatever is in that bag over there.”
“Okay.”
She licked her lips and then added, “I’m afraid I drank part of your anniversary present last night. I bought you some wine but figured I’d enjoy it with Melissa.”
He laughed a little. “I guess that serves me right. What was the other part?”
“Well…the other part, I’ll show you some other day.” * * * * *
Five minutes of hot, brain-blowing sex did not a healed marriage make. As he stood in the bathroom, staring at his haggard reflection, he reminded himself of that.
They had to talk.
They had to fix this marriage.
But first…hell, would it kill them to take a night and just be together? He’d missed that. So much. When had they drifted apart like this? When had he let it happen?

Clock is ticking…
Want to help name the kitty? I’m auctioning off the chance to name a cat…yep, a cat, in one of my upcoming FBI Psychic books.

You can bid on naming the kitty here. The kitty belongs to Tucker, who is probably one of the coolest guys I’ve met in my FBI series. You’ll meet him in The Reunited.
