“An intelligent Perconti woman giving back to the community on her own terms,” he murmured as he slid his gaze down her body. “You must be a thorn in your brother’s side.”
Ari’s heart melted a little at the word intelligent. No one had ever called her that before. She knew that the media painted her as a dopey party girl, someone who couldn’t do anything without her brothers’ help. For years she had tried to change people’s minds, but the reputation clung to her like tanning spray.
“Leo’s just overprotective, that’s all. I like to do things my own way.” As she placed her hand on his chest to stop him from pulling her closer, she marveled at the ripple of muscle underneath his leather jacket. The more she talked to him, the harder it was to remember why he was off-limits. “I think I frustrate him sometimes.”
Jason chuckled. “Then it appears we have something in common, Ms. Perconti.”
“Do we?” She dragged her gaze away from her hand and looked at his face.
He nodded as amusement twinkled in his eyes. “I frustrate your brother, too.”
Her breath caught as he flashed her his dimpled smile. “I guess we’re quite the pair, huh?”
“Yes, Arianna. Quite the pair indeed.” Heat rippled through her as the amusement in his features faded, replaced by something more intense and hungry.
Time seemed to stand still as the crowd around them faded away. Ari’s heartbeat quickened, and her legs felt weak. God, if he could affect her like this with just a look, imagine what he could do with a touch, a kiss . . .
Off-limits, she had to yell in her mind. After a long moment, she cleared her throat and glanced at the McLaren beside her.
“Your car is beautiful,” she said in an effort to change the subject.
“It has nothing on you.”
“Flirt.” Ari felt the heat rise to her cheeks as she pulled her hand from his. “My brother warned me about you.”
“Oh really?” He seemed amused. “What did he say?”
“He said that you were a manipulative asshole.”
He snorted. “He’d be right—but only in the boardroom.” He reclined his arm on the car and inched his fingers toward her. “Outside the boardroom, I can be . . .”
“Kind?” She dragged her gaze back to his.
“Fun,” he corrected.
“Forgiving?” She leaned forward, closing the distance between them.
“Laid back.” He eased his fingers closer and twirled a long strand of her hair around his fingers.
“I like laid back.” She focused on his right dimple and wondered what it would feel like to run her tongue over it.
“You do?” He shifted his gaze from his fingers to her face.
She nodded. “I like fun even more.”
“Well then.” He shifted his hand and hooked his finger under her chin. “It seems as if we have something else in common, Ms. Perconti.”
She nodded. “I think we do. And call me Ari.”
“Ari.” His voice was filled with awe and caused something to flutter in her lower abdomen.
“Here we are.” Stefan hurried over with the cameraman and a large cardboard check. “Sorry about the wait.”
“No trouble.” Ari cleared her throat and stepped away from Jason. The distance allowed her to get her bearings. What was she doing, flirting with the enemy?
“Now, if you’d stand here, Ms. Perconti,” the cameraman said.
Ari moved into position and made a show of taking the oversized check from Stefan and Jason. Then they repositioned themselves as Ari and Stefan handed an equally obnoxiously large check to Jason.
“I told you that I didn’t want the money,” Jason said to Stefan.
“You have to take it,” Ari said. “It’s part of the deal. The winner gets ten percent.”“But I don’t need it.”
“It’s not about needing it. It’s about sportsmanship and fun.”
“Interesting,” he murmured as he dragged his gaze over her curvy frame. “What if there was another way to achieve your goal, one where you got to keep your money?”
“Another way?” Ari wrinkled her brow in confusion.
“Yes.”
Intrigued, Ari lowered her check. “I’m listening.”
“Instead of taking the money, I take you.” When she frowned, he hurried to continue. “Just out to dinner. One boring dinner, that’s all I ask.”
She narrowed her gaze. “So let me get this straight. I get to keep the money if I go out to some fancy restaurant with you?”
“Not a fancy restaurant. Somewhere more . . . amusing.” He grinned, showing off his dimple once more. “Consider it an extra donation from a benefactor.” He inched closer. “Someone who admires your passion for helping kids.”
Ari glanced at Stefan, unsure. “It’s a lot of money you’re giving up.” And she knew that Leo would frown upon her taking it from Jason. This was a dangerous game they were playing, one where she could end up in a lot of trouble with her family. “Leo would kill me for being indebted to you.”
“Just some beer and wings, and your brother will never know.” Jason closed the distance between them and flashed her that gorgeous, conspiratorial smile. “It will be our little secret.”
“Beer and wings, huh?” The prospect of going to a restaurant with Jason was exciting. She never got to just hang out informally. Everything was orchestrated to show off her family’s cultured lifestyle and elegance. Beer and wings sounded . . . divine.
Ari nibbled her lower lip. Jason may be manipulative, but she was a Perconti. If Leo could hold his own with Jason, it stood to reason that she could, too. Besides, it was only dinner. How much trouble could she possibly get into in a couple of hours?
“Okay,” she said. “I’ll do it.”
“Perfect. It’s a date.”
“Can we take the picture now?” Stefan asked.
“Of course.” As Jason moved beside Ari and slid his arm around her waist, warm tingles raced over her skin. She did her best to listen to the instructions and smile for the camera, but it was difficult. Jason’s body heat surrounded her, making her feel safe and protected. It took most of her willpower to resist curling up next to him and burying her face in that strong, protective chest, especially when his fingers were inching down from her waist, skimming against her hip and upper thigh.
When the session was done, Stefan helped the cameraman pack up his things. Ari started to move away from Jason, but he gripped her hip tighter, holding her in place. Before she could protest, he leaned close, so close that his lips were inches away from her ear.
“I’ll pick you up tomorrow at eight. Be sure to wear something comfortable.” He dragged his hungry gaze down her body. “If you’re good, I might even give you a ride in the McLaren.”
The McLaren. Ari took a step back and watched Jason get into his car, wondering just what she had gotten herself into.

Excerpt:
Santa’s Little HelperJay gazed approvingly at her reflection in the tinsel-decorated mirror. The gold material shimmered as she turned from side-to-side. Cut to fit tightly against her chest, the bodice section gave way to an extremely short, almost tutu-style skirt, of the finest silvery gauze. Her fingers trailed through the soft folds before she reached around to stroke the feather like wings that protruded from her back. The fabric curtain was drawn back and the sales assistant drew a breath. ‘You are possibly the most beautiful fairy ever destined to top a Christmas tree.’ He pulled the ties tighter at the back of the bodice, forcing Jay to stand up taller. ‘You are also the sexiest.’ He pushed two exquisite high-heeled shoes towards her white-stocking-clad feet, enjoying the view as her tiny gold thong flashed in front of his eyes when she bent slightly to slip them on. As a final touch he slid a delicate glittering tiara onto her short curled hair, and put a wand in her hand. ‘Now, all that’s missing is a smile.’ ‘I am smiling.’ ‘That’s not a smile, that’s the evil grin of a wicked slut who knows that every guy that claps eyes on you is going to be asking Santa Claus if he can screw you for Christmas.’ ...

I entered the office conference room to find my assistant, Bebe, busily applying a green tea, mud mask to our Creative Director’s neck. Thus far, my assistants have either needed extensive training, or have just reached the point where they are well-trained and realize they are too advanced to be an assistant. Bebe was thankfully at the in-between stage, good for at least another six months before the threat of quitting would arise unless given a raise. She had also recently relocated to Los Angeles from Atlanta so hopefully she didn’t have enough connections for me to worry about her being poached by another firm. The only obvious health benefit I could discern from Bebe bathing Josh Cohen in this green goo was he couldn’t request anything from me for fear of cracking its cakey exterior.
The firm’s president, Bruce Lindsay, was the only person senior to Josh. My three years at Cohen & Lindsay Creative revealed that Bruce brought forth the money, while Josh supplied an element of peculiar that the media and our clients interpreted as “genius.”
I stepped over Josh’s supine figure and leaned down to where Bebe was kneeling amidst bowls of slime. “I don’t suppose you could give me a hand?” I asked.
“Of course. Just as soon as Josh has been thoroughly cleansed.”
“Send him to church,” I whispered. “I need you more.”
Another ten minutes passed before Bebe appeared. “What took you? I’m on the verge of a life seizure.”
Within the hour I had Bebe retrieve that day’s edition of Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety before Josh retreated into the bathroom with them. I never liked reading the mags after someone else had folded and fiddled with the different sections, disrupting their natural order and creasing the pages. The thought of going through a paper that had been exposed to Josh’s bathroom air was even worse.
“Are they fresh?” I asked.
“Of course, they’re pre-prune,” she said knowingly.
I grabbed for the papers and began feverishly turning the pages until I found what I wanted.
“Ooh, news about Ryan? Hurry, I wanna see, too,” she said leaning over my shoulder.
I fumbled with the papers a minute, turning to the “First Look” and “Talent Watch”
sections, trying in vein to find any news about Ryan that might give me a sign as to who or what had brought on this epiphany. “Bebe, I don’t think we’re in luck this morning.”
“Okie dokie, I’ll just check on Josh if you don’t need me.”
I waited until Bebe skipped across the hall to Josh’s office before returning to the section that would really give me an answer...my horoscope.
Aries: Love relationship on tender hooks while moon is in Jupiter; give partner space for personal growth. Focus on quiet solitude to promote healing.
I understand the theory of planetary pull, but in my experience, the planets never pull for me. The realization has forced me to discover my own astrological solution. If I find anything remotely negative with my horoscope, Aries (March 21-April 20 to be exact), I search for another sign more suitable. I figure with rising signs, birth signs, moon signs, and sun signs we’re all somehow related to nearly every sign. When the planets are completely ignorant of my needs, I form a sort of horoscope soufflé, gently folding in portions of one reading to add to another.
My mother, a devout horoscope follower and Hints from Heloise reader, is convinced my practice can only lead to heartache and poor investments. My sister, Melissa, fears horoscopes reduce spontaneity by causing unnecessary consideration of one’s actions. In the continuum of my family, I fall somewhere in between.
“Give partner space for personal growth.” Right. As if I could sit idle and allow Ryan to nab more boyfriends than my life’s total. I had to do something to correct this injustice. Ryan was obviously insane, and I was meant to be with him!

Tutankhamen Speaks by Cheryl Carpinello @ccarpinello ~ New Series Release Out Now!

BOOK SYNOPSIS2014 EVVY Merit Award for Historical Fiction from CIPA (Colorado Independent Publishers Assoc.) Long ago the old texts of ancient Egypt alluded to scrolls in which King Tut spoke to the people from beyond the tomb. Many archeologists put this down to an incorrect translation of the ancient Egyptian texts. Others swore to the accuracy of the translation. None of that mattered because the scrolls in question could not be found. Scholars labeled it a hoax, something that never existed. It was ludicrous to imagine someone speaking from the grave. They were wrong on both accounts.BUY & TBR LINKSAMAZON KINDLE USAMAZON KINDLE CAAMAZON KINDLE UKAMAZON PAPERBACKBARNES & NOBLESBARNES & NOBLES PAPERBACKSMASHWORDSITUNESGOODREADSSHELFARIEXCERPTSome afternoons when the palace guards relaxed their vigil and most of the people napped out of the heat, Ankhesenpaaten and I would climb the stairs up to the windows. Looking out, we could see over the tops of buildings far to the East where the Aten appeared each morning. “Where would you go, Ankhesenpaaten, if you could leave Egypt?” I asked one afternoon. Her eyes sparkled, and her smile widened. I watched as she rested her chin on her arms, her eyes drawn beyond the eastern horizon. “I would travel beyond the beginnings of our land,” she said. I looked at her questioningly. “In the women’s quarters, one hears stories,” she explains. “A few of the women are from there. The tales they have told are wonderful!” She turned to me then. “Imagine Tutankhaten, pools of sparkling water surrounded by lush, green bushes and trees, flowers of pink, orange, white, and even black!” “How is that different from here?” I asked. “Here it is only along the Nile where the bushes, reeds, and flowers grow. There in the land they call Persia exists a city where gardens hang from cliffs and mountain sides! I would love to see such a sight.” A few years later, I remembered her wish. After we were married, I had a section of our palace in Thebes reconstructed to resemble those hanging gardens that she so wished to see. Had we been given more time, I would have ventured outside of Egypt’s borders and taken Ankhesenpaaten to the gardens in person.

Gavin’s gaze was drawn back to the castle’s battle-scarred walls and the heavily armed guards. The evil emanating from the structure surrounded and held him captive, like a lone deer surrounded by hungry wolves in the dead of winter, unable to move, its eyes glassy with fear, its limbs frozen by the hypnotic gleam of the wolves’ yellow eyes. Even knowing its life was ending, the deer wouldn’t break and run. So Gavin sat frozen in front of the castle. The enormity of his quest enveloped Gavin and he sighed. Continuing on meant he might save the Wild Man, but he might put himself in danger as well. King Edward was his father’s enemy and possibly responsible for Aldred’s murder. If Gavin were caught, Edward wouldn’t treat him kindly. The young prince summoned his courage and focused on the Wild Man. It had seemed so simple last night in the company of Bryan and Philip.******************** Philip
Looking at the stack of chopped wood, he smiled sadly. Two years ago he would never have dreamed he’d be here, chopping wood for food and a dry place to sleep. He shook his head at his thoughts, his shaggy, ill-cut black hair falling unevenly across his forehead. Two years. It seemed like forever. Two years earlier, he had lived with his parents and baby brother on their small farm up north. His parents worked hard to put food on the table and to pay off the farm. Philip’s main job was to watch baby Benjamin while his mother helped his father in their small field. When Benjamin fell sick, Philip helped his father clear the old stalks and rocks from the soil while his mother nursed the baby. He helped his father carefully plant the winter wheat and barley for harvest in the spring. As autumn slipped into winter, Benjamin hadn’t gotten better. His tiny body burned with fever. Those last few days when Philip held him, the heat coming from Benjamin threatened to slowly engulf him like the embers of a dying fire.
Bryan
In the five years he’d been James’s apprentice, Bryan had learned a lot. He made a sturdy sword, so James said. Two years still remained in his apprenticeship. Two long years.Like most sons of tradesmen or farmers, his family had secured this apprenticeship early on. At eleven, he and his father had made the three-day journey south to the Pembroke Castle blacksmith. At first, the prospect of being away from home, on his own, and learning a respectable trade, was exciting. More importantly, it allowed him to see and talk with real knights. He spent every day learning how to forge stronger swords, tougher armour, how to shoe horses, and even make pots and pans. It was a satisfying trade and one that would ensure him a livelihood. But Bryan didn’t want just a livelihood. Even now, only two years away from completing his apprenticeship, he still couldn’t see himself working with metal for the rest of his life. As long as he could remember, he had wanted only one thing: to be a knight like Sir Lancelot.AUTHOR BIOI am a retired high school English teacher. “It’s better now.” How embarrassing that she’d shrieked. Now he felt warm inside her. Satisfying. This was where she belonged, joined to Henri Foucault. “This is nice.” He looked so contrite. But more than that, he looked a little…frightened. Not like the wicked duc at all. She couldn’t have that. “That kissing before… down there… was nice.”
“Have you, uh, never had an orgasm?”
She shook her head. “I would have known, I’m sure.”
He took a breath and squeezed his eyes at that. Then he opened them as though he had decided something. “You can get the same feeling again, only by a different means, if you’ll bear with me.” The small smile was back, but it was rueful now. “It won’t hurt like that again.”
“I’d like that.”

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Author:  Susan SquiresDate of Birth:  11/27Date of Interview:  11/23Place:  I’m at the beach in Redondo Beach. The Book:  Time for Eternity
Tell us about your newest release. What genre do you enjoy writing the most? Why?I’m a romance writer to the core. I’m always disappointed when I read a Nicolas Sparks novel that purports to be a romance but everybody dies at the end. That’s not a romance, that’s a tragedy. I love the “getting to know you” scenes where the hero and heroine begin to suspect that they are right for each other in spite of all apparent evidence to the contrary. And I love to see how characters that feel real work out their issues and achieve a happily ever after ending. I have always been a lover of the paranormal, because the consequences can be so much bigger. (Save the world, risk your soul—that sort of thing.)
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your story?TIME FOR ETERNITY was full of surprises. Time travel books allow you to visit other times and places, and so I learned lots about the French Revolution. When Frankie the modern day vampire, goes back to kill the man she thought she loved before he can turn her into a monster, I knew that modern Frankie would have to co-exist with the innocent Françoise she is in the 18th century. Figuring out how to convey that was surprising, and fun. And when I searched for my hero, I harkened back to the story of the Scarlet Pimpernel, and to my first and favorite romance hero (see below—the Duc d’Avon from Georgette Heyer.) That created a surprising meld of all my experience with romance and adventure. P.S. Did you know that Monsieur Guillotine created his device as a humane way to execute prisoners?
Who is your favorite hero of fiction? I loved the Duc D’Avon in Georgette Heyer’s  THESE OLD SHADES. He’s handsome, smarter than anyone else in the room, jaded and a “bad man” who has done some very bad things. Yet he finds his match in a resourceful orphan who is both as jaded as he is, and innocent in her faith in him. When he gets his revenge on the man who abandoned her to a foul fate, it’s SO satisfying.
What is your most treasured possession? I always think of this question as, if you had 10 minutes warning of a tsunami coming (we live at the beach) what would you grab? So of course, it would be our dogs, Blitz and Belle, our treasured Belgian Sheepdogs that run our lives and “organize” us. The only question is about the word “possession.” I think they would say we’re the “possession” and they’re the owners.
With whom, living or dead and why, would you like to sit and chat with for an afternoon?I think I’d like to talk to Abraham Lincoln. After seeing the movie a couple of years ago, I learned that he was way more complicated than anything we learned about him in school. He took great risks for something he believed in, and was willing to do some questionable things—like blackmail?—to accomplish it. He was both idealistic and imminently practical, and we could use some of that in our leaders today.
Who or what has been the greatest love of your life? Why, How?I’ve been married for forty years, and I still love the man like crazy. Who knew? I thought I would be thirty, terribly sophisticated, having liaisons as I chose and leaving them heartbroken. I met Harry at 21, and that was all she wrote. We married four years later after cohabiting for three and a half. My parents were divorcing, and his should have divorced rather than continue their dance of pain. We didn’t have great examples of monogamy working out to happily ever after. He finally talked me into marrying him by saying that he just couldn’t take the chance of letting me get away. And he still shows me he loves me every day. Sometimes that’s by bossing me around when he doesn’t think I’m taking care of myself. But I see through that to the love beneath. We’ve supported each other through thick and thin, traveled the world together creating memories, and had great times, and we’ll have many more.
What is your greatest regret?Actually, my greatest regret is about writing. I persevered in the en, and published 17 books with Dorchester and MacMillan before I started putting out my own books. But I didn’t do it quickly enough. What I mean is that after I wrote my first book and discovered it wasn’t very good (most first books aren’t), I didn’t start doing the hard work of learning my craft for several years. Then, when I sent out the revised first book and got an agent interested, she said I needed to cut the book almost in half to get it published, and I didn’t know how to do that. So I quit writing for another several years before I recommitted to writing and wrote a second novel. That was the one that got published (DANEGELD). SACRAMENT, the first book, was also published, after I learned how to cut it down. But I let myself get discouraged several times before I recommitted to my path. I would have been published a lot sooner if I had just kept at it. .How can readers connect with you online? My website is at www.susansquires.comand all the information about books, existing and upcoming is there, as well as pictures of locations, etc.  My author page is where I actively post on Facebook at AuthorSusanSquires. And I post on Twitter @susansquires.
Can you tell us what is coming up next for you? I’m currently working on the last (maybe) book in my Magic Series, about a modern day family who has inherited the magic in their DNA from Merlin of Camelot. The magic, once dispersed and lost, is coming together again. When one of the Tremaine family meets someone else with the magic gene, they get true love and a magic power. You’d think that would be great, right? But when has the course of true love ever run smoothly? Each sibling of the large Tremaine family has their own book, and we’re down to Tammy, the youngest, and the culmination of the Tremaines’ fight against the Clan (who got their power from Morgan Le Fey.) This series benefits from starting from the beginning, since you get to watch the kids grow up and into who they’ll be when they find the One for them. The first book is Do You Believe in Magic?

TOP TEN AUTHOR TIPS
1.       Write routinely if you don’t write every day. It takes too much effort to get back into the habit if you let too much time go by between writing sessions. 2.       Don’t try for perfect in the first draft. Just get it down. You can always fix it later.3.       Make sure your first chapter starts with some action and defines some problem. That’s how to make it interesting. 4.       You first line or two has to grab the reader. Make it stand out, AND reveal something about the character or the character’s problem.5.       End chapters on a high note, or a problem or a question. Don’t let them dribble away with routine matters.6.       Pay attention to grammar. Grammar is the signpost to meaning for the reader. And even if you hire a copy editor to clean up your bad grammar, you’ll pay a lot less if she doesn’t have to do too much.7.       Be hard on your characters. Give them faults and problems, and then make the problems worse. Authors are in an abusive relationship with their characters, and that’s what makes a book satisfying for readers when things finally work themselves out. 8.       Speaking of faults, lots of authors make their main female characters too one-dimensional. I think that’s because we identify with our main characters. Who wants to admit faults? But multi-dimensional characters are way more interesting. 9.       Don’t use setting and situations as “wallpaper” that fades into the background your story. If you’re writing historical, tell us what it would really be like to live in that time. If you’re writing about a particular profession, bother to understand what they do and use it in the story. Really go there and take the reader with you.10.   Take the time to put your book down after you’re finished for a “rest” period. Then go back and do a ruthless editing job on it. The time away will give you some distance. The editing will make the book the best it can be….

Lexi’s voice had gone hoarse, but she tried again to call for help, emitting faint sounds from her dry throat. Ginger mewled.
To her amazement, a husky voice answered. “Try not to move. I’ll be right up.”
She followed the sound to the bottom of the tree and figured the blood rushing from her feet to her brain had turned her mind to oatmeal. She’d either grown delusional, or died from her injuries, because the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen had moved into her line of sight and stood at the base of her apple tree.
She squeezed her eyes closed, and then opened them again. The man was still there. He had corn-colored hair and looked up at her with the eyes of an angel. The soot on his cheeks and chin couldn’t camouflage the stunning face beneath.
A firefighter dressed in full regalia had come to her rescue.
She watched, filled with relief and hope, as he hoisted a circle of rope over his shoulder and gripped a long-handled hook with an axe on the opposite side. In one smooth motion, he began to climb. She’d never been so glad to see another human being.
That’s when Lexi remembered her naked breasts and the purple lace thong she barely wore.

Excerpt:
from Love Through a Lens by Lucy Felthouse
Celine gritted her teeth and hung tightly onto the straps of her backpack as she forced one foot in front of the other up the steep incline. Her heart felt like it was going to explode from her chest, and her lungs screamed with the effort of providing her oxygen supply. Really, she needed to stop, to catch her breath, regain some equilibrium. But Edward was already way ahead of her, striding powerfully along as though their chosen path were perfectly flat. He had a huge backpack of his own, too, which didn’t seem to be slowing him down a jot.But then, this was the difference between the two of them—or one of the differences, anyway. Edward Robson, mid-list British actor, was also a very keen outdoorsman, and probably did these kinds of walks all the time—with or without a camera being pointed at him.Celine Paterson, however, was a different story altogether. Newly graduated from university, she’d struggled to find filming work in her preferred field—fashion—and so she’d had to cast her net wider. Incredibly wide, as it happened. With hindsight, it was easy to see why she’d gotten the job with Edward—nobody else had wanted it. Not a damn soul. Traipsing around the Peak District wasn’t so bad, but add in heavy camera equipment, camping gear, food, clothing, maps, plans, GPS unit, satellite phone and makeup—for Edward, not for her—and a nice walk suddenly became a grueling trek. The money was poor, too, especially considering she was the only member of Edward’s crew. Could a single person even be called a crew? Or was she just a dogsbody? She’d had no choice. It was this job or nothing. Crap money or no money. And, most importantly, this credit on her resumé or no credit at all. She knew she had to start racking the credits and references up soon, if she wanted to get ahead in the highly competitive field. So here she was, dragging herself up a heart attack inducing hill in the wake of an actor-cum-presenter. At least the project was interesting; they were checking out sites of myths, legends and ghost stories, that kind of thing. Edward was nice, too—kind, polite and pretty funny. Even better, it wasn’t raining. Overall, things could be a damn sight worse. She could be working with animals or children—or even both. And she’d heard many times over that they were the absolute worst. She was still convincing herself that things weren’t that bad after all, when she glanced up and came to an abrupt halt as she realized there was a crotch practically in her face. Snapping her head up so fast it made her neck hurt, she made eye contact with Edward, who was standing a couple of paces farther up the slope, hence the awkward face-to-crotch angle. Her already hot face blazed with embarrassment. For once, she hoped the fact she was overheated would hide her mortification. The slight breeze that blew was doing nothing to lower her temperature.“Are you all right?” he asked, his blue-green eyes soft with concern. “I’m so sorry, you must think me incredibly rude. I honestly thought you were right behind me—you being a young thing and all that. It was only when you didn’t reply to me or answer any of my questions that I realized I’d inadvertently left you behind.”“I’m all right,” Celine replied, her chest heaving as she fought to regulate her breathing and slow down her heart rate while she had the chance. “Just not used to this sort of thing. A walk for me is a stroll by a riverbank, or hitting the shops. I’m sure my fitness level will improve as we continue with the project. Go ahead, if you like. I’ll catch up with you… eventually.”Edward shook his head. “No, let’s have a rest. I could do with a drink and a snack.” Turning, he looked around, then pointed. “Let’s head there. It looks as though there’s a patch of flattish ground big enough for us both to sit down.”“Okay.” She followed him again, but this time only for a few seconds. Edward helped her remove her rucksack—which was almost as big as she was—and then immediately opened it and began removing things. It was only when she saw he’d long since taken out the drinks and snacks that she queried what he was doing.“I’m taking some of the heavier items out of your bag. If I re-jig things, we’ll still fit everything in, but you’ll have a lighter load. Would you mind making some tea for us both while I do this?” He indicated the miniature camping stove, metal cups and other tea-making paraphernalia.“No, of course not,” she said. “But there’s no need for you to do that. I’m perfectly okay with carrying my share of the weight.”“I know you are. But I’m not. You’ve enough to put up with on this crazy project. I don’t want you getting injured or ill on me—I need you. Not to mention my conscience wouldn’t take it.” He sat beside her, looked at the large pile he’d made, and began sorting it into their respective rucksacks.Shaking her head, Celine lit the stove and set about making the hot drinks. “Sugar?”“Yes, please. Three.”She shot him a look. “Three?”His eyes glinted with amusement. “Yes, three. What can I say, I like my tea sweet. And while we’re on this project I’ve got a good excuse—I need the energy. You should try it, it’s delicious.”Wrinkling her nose, Celine nevertheless added three sugars to each of the mugs of tea. “Here you go.” She handed Edward his, then cradled hers, blowing on the liquid until it was cool enough to drink. “So, what did you mean when you said I’ve enough to put up with?”Frowning, Edward took a gulp of his tea before replying. “I know this project isn’t ideal, Celine, not for you. For me, it’s wonderful—the melding together of several of my passions. But for you, it’s trekking through often unforgiving countryside with a shed load of gear and filming an old fart going on about big black cats, the ghosts of Roman soldiers and mysterious lights in the sky. And I know your wages aren’t very good, either. Believe me, if I could have offered you more, I would have.”Gazing intently at the surface of the tea, she mumbled, “You’re not an old fart.”Edward threw his head back and laughed loudly. The joyous sound rang across the lonely hillside for several long moments. Then he said, “But you’re not denying any of the rest of it!”

Trusting Stone by Alexa Sinclaire

Excerpt:
The car shifted into motion and Sebastian pressed a button, raising the privacy screen between the driver and the backseat. Eden’s debutante training was beginning to kick in and she started to speak.“I don’t know how to thank…” But before she could finish the sentence, he was on her.Sebastian’s lips pressed against hers with a gentleness that didn’t seem to match the cool blue eyes that had been watching her moments ago. His hands caressed her hair and Eden found herself responding. She kissed back, opening her mouth to let his tongue gently sweep in. That act of acceptance acted like a trigger and Sebastian’s soft kiss turned ferocious. His hands gripped her hair, angling her head as his mouth assaulted hers. But she responded in turn and her hands reached to grasp his forearms, pulling him into her even more. With one hand still lost in her hair, his right hand started moving, sliding down her neck, traveling over the smooth black silk of her dress until it cupped her breast. Eden moaned in surprise and desire. She should have been afraid, but she wasn’t. For the first time in years, she wanted this, wanted this man who she barely knew caressing her, touching her, turning her on. She pushed forward with her body, signaling to him that he had permission, wanting him to do more, giving herself to him. She could feel herself getting wet and she sucked in air as his mouth broke away from their embrace and moved down her face, kissing her neck and exposed skin along her shoulder. The electricity she had felt in the hall when he had simply grazed her shoulder with his fingers was now magnified as his lips and tongue danced across her skin, and her body felt like it was on fire. His touch seemed to ignite and yet quench the flames that shot through her. His hand moved from her breast, sweeping down her waist, cupping her ass and pulling her even closer. She moaned into his hair as his mouth continued to caress and nuzzle her neckline. She was lost in his touch and his scent, her senses overwhelmed.
Suddenly, he pulled away and Eden tried to regain her composure, gasping for air, smoothing her dress as he leaned across her to open the door. She hadn’t even realized they had stopped. How long had they been driving? It had felt like only seconds.
