Self-Esteem

I was dismayed to hear from [info:] greygirlbeast that Livejournal is "on life support" because of newer, shinier social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. I'm no longer on Facebook, but I've been having way too much fun on Twitter (as @docbrite, if you didn't get the memo). Obviously I need to get my ass back here more frequently. So here, for old times' sake, is a stupid LJ survey. It's called "The Self-Esteem Meme," and I picked it because the phrase "self-esteem" never fails to amuse me....

Nepenthes

[info:] txtriffidranch! Look! I have a pitcher!

There are some small gnat-type insects floating around in the bottom, so it is hunting.

Thanks again! The Medusa's Head is doing fine too, though still small. Tiny toads are living in its catch pot.

Our Lady of Prompt Censure Redux

Completely forgot to post the last thought of that entry, which was that, by contrast to the large, presumably conservative, and overwhelmingly white congregation at Our Lady of Prompt Censure, I looked around at our tiny rosary service outside OLGC this morning and saw four queer people (that I knew of, including me), a black man, and two Latinas. And a lot of other people with whom I just feel comfortable and know I can discuss anything, religious or secular, without being judged and...

P.S.

Just a reminder: Because I'm in the process of cleaning out/remodeling my office (yeah, yeah, I know I've been in that process for about two months now; it's a big job and my stamina isn't the greatest these days), I haven't been using my computer as much as usual. Which is stupid, because it's a laptop -- i.e. designed for carrying around -- and if I don't want to hang out in my chaotic office, I should just go get it and bring it somewhere else, as I've done now (I'm posting this in bed). I...

Our Lady of Prompt Censure

Yesterday I went to afternoon Mass at Our Lady of Prompt Censure. That isn't its real name, but I don't want to hurt the feelings of any parishioners who may be reading; there are some good people in the congregation, but it is far too conservative for me. We listened to a homily called "Jesus Is Not Politically Correct," all about how if you've been divorced you are an adulterer and if you've had an abortion, well, you're just fucked. Then we sang a hymn that sounded like "Tomorrow Belongs t...

1:25PM Madelyn Murphy speaks about library and introduces Chris Rose

1:30 PM Chris Rose, MC

eBay

I've got to start doing eBay auctions again soon. Would it matter to you as a buyer if they ended late at night (central US time)? That's when I am likeliest to post them. Please reply here, on Twitter (where I'm @docbrite), or via eBay (where I'm onlysleeping).

Ignatius

John McConnell is a local stage actor best known for portraying Huey Long, Earl Long, and Ignatius J. Reilly from A Confederacy of Dunces. In an interview with Chris Rose, he comments: "I'm wondering if every city shouldn't have its own Confederacy of Dunces that expertly, precisely, and concisely defines the character and characters of that city." I don't know if this is possible, because it has never seemed to me that other cities are as intensely self-aware and insistent upon their own...

Oops

Um, oops. The Banned Books event isn't until next Sunday. My apologies if anyone planned to go today -- if I hadn't checked, you'd have seen me there too, clutching my copy of It and looking bewildered.

Banned Books Reading

Almost forgot: I'll be appearing at the ACLU-sponsored Banned Books reading, Sunday from 1pm - 4pm at the Bridge Lounge on Magazine Street. This is my first public appearance since early 2007, and probably my last one for a while; I haven't the desire or the stamina to return to public life (even such a small public life as I lived), but of course I support this cause, and I have a reading I've been wanting to do. It'll consist of sections 2, 4, and 6 from the epilogue of It, a gorgeous...
