GOD GAVE ME A JEEP

I'm a bit hesitant to tell this story for several reasons, but then again, it's pretty incredible.

Over the last several years my wife and I have bought two different automobiles for somone who had a need.

They weren't much - a couple of old beaters in the "less than $2000" range. Kind of embarrasing to hand off in a way, but better than nothing. It's what we could (uncomfortably) afford.

Then, toward the first part of this year, I was aware of a guy from my church that was in trouble...

"MY SISTER IS DYING."

A couple months ago the head on my golf driver broke off during a swing and flew about 100 yards in front of me. Straight and long. Nice.

So a few days later I was looking at clubs on consignment at a country club near my home - preparing to take a couple out to the range and hit some balls.

A voice from behind me said, "Sorry if I'm not very helpful today. My sister is dying and I'm having a hard time."

I turned to look. It was the lady at the counter. She was vanishing into...

JESUS - MY "IMAGINARY" FRIEND?

I'm about as skeptical as they come.

If my wife is reading Reader's Digest and says to me, "Did you know the average four-year-old child asks 400 questions a day?" My immediate response is, "How do they know that?"

Did they cite their source?

Is the source credible?

How many kids were involved in this study - did they know they were being studied? That might skew the results. How was an accurate count maintained?

Sometimes I hate that part of my brain - it's hard to embrace a lot of...

JESUS IN GOLF SHOES

I was at a book signing in Orlando, Florida about three weeks ago when the guy pictured here came through the line looking for a book.

It's pretty typical to banter with people as I'm signing books and he and I hit it off in our brief conversation. When the signing was over, he stuck around and we talked for quite a while - maybe an hour.

It didn't take me long to figure out, this guy had something I wanted.

During our conversation, pretty much all he talked about was Jesus. But it was di...

DON'T GET CUTE

When I was a kid, I learned about prayer in Sunday school.

"Get on your knees."

"Fold your hands."

"Close your eyes."

"Now say these words."

There was probably more freedom attached to the instructions, but that's what I took from the lesson.

"Do these things when you talk to God and He'll hear you."

I've carried that mentality into my adult life and this morning I was feeling "blah."

"What's wrong with me? Where is God today? I must need to pray ... read the Bible ... pla...

HOW'S THIS FOR PERSPECTIVE?

This will be far from typical for my blog, but I have been receiving emails from my sister who decided to move to India for several months this summer. She is, essentially, hanging out at an orphanage, helping the kids, and loving on the people. The following is a collection of excerpts from her emails.

It's quite a bit of reading, but so fascinating (and convicting) I decided to post it anyway. Next time I should be back to my typical 2-3 minutes of reading.

If you just want the highli...

ABSOLUTE ABSURDITIES

I was doing some reading online about fantasy football. (Yes, fantasy football is just Dungeons and Dragons for less obvious nerds. And yes, I've been both kinds.)

The site I was reading also contains what the author calls his "raves" - writing on topics that have nothing to do with football.

He wrote about meeting another person he found annoying:

"Number one, he wouldn't shut up about how great The Who was and how they were 'the greatest band of all-time' and how Pete Townshend was the 'g...

THE POWER OF PRAYER AND "HELLO"

Before I board a plane I try and focus on two principles.

1) Prayer - I pray God will put me next to the right person at the right time. That he or she will be searching - hungry for God - and that I will help in whatever way God wants.

2) Saying "Hello" - It's a simple truth. In order to start talking, you have to start talking. So, whenever I board, almost without exception, the first thing I do, even before I fasten my seatbelt, is extend my hand.

"Hi. I'm H.L."

And shocking...

WHAT HUMILITY IS NOT

Humility is tricky.

I mean, I'm the most humble guy I know, but it comes with difficulty. I'm sure you can imagine what it's like to look in the mirror and see these pearly whites shining back.

I don't know. Maybe you can't.

It's hard work being humble.

And the Bible is chock full of suggestions and commands concerning the trait.

"What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8)

"Humble yourselves, therefore, unde...
