Education reform: Old as history

My Inquirer column last Wednesday was on the report of the second Education Commission (2024), my column today is on the report of the FIRST Education Commission (1991). How much has improved, remained the same, or gotten worse since are questions we need to ask if we are to address the crisis in education.

This portrait of Rizal [Left] signed by Telesforo Sucgang in Madrid on November 1, 1891[Upper Right] is the most unflattering, and is said to be the best likeness painted from life rather than a photo. It presently hangs in the Rizal Shrine Fort Santiago. On the back [Lower Right] are the names of friends who presented it to Rizal as a gift: E. Ruiz, T. Arriola, O, Rienzares, and T. Sucgang.

My first time in the Manila Hotel Macarhur Suite

My first time in the Manila Hotel Macarhur Suite.
The original suite occupied an entire floor and was luxuriously furnished for Douglas MacArthur. When he was billed, MacArthur reported it to Manuel Luis Quezon who solved the problem by getting MacArthur appointed Honorary General Manager of the Manila Hotel.
An Amorsolo portrait of the general on the wall behind me. Thanks to Emil Yap and Marvin Kim Tan for access.

Dr Ambeth Ocampo, Professor of the Department of History, leads our conversation with his ...

True bragging rights

True bragging rights.
Walked aimlessly in the Manila Cathedral yesterday.
When I looked up the chancel, I saw two red hats hanging on the ceiling. These are cardinal’s hats or “galeros” of two archbishops of Manila buried in the crypt below: Rufino Card. Santos and Jaime Card. Sin.
Most visitors will miss these, but as they say "God is in the details."
