RIZAL RANSOMED: THE SAGA OF THE RIZAL MANUSCRIPTS

Priceless since the time they were made in the late 19th century, Jose Rizal's surviving manuscripts are preserved in THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE PHILIPPINES and the Lopez Museum and Library. In 1961 the manuscripts of Noli me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, and Mi Ultimo Adios were stolen from the National Library and held for ransom. The stories of their recovery and how these originally came to the National Library are stranger than fiction.

Why should students endure boring textbook biographies of Rizal when he practically left an autobiography scattered in the 25 volumes of his compiled writing? Here, Rizal and me discuss his mother.

When some people eat fish or meat they only see these in parts, like a filet, and never see the whole. I wonder how the foreigners at the Malacanang State dinner hosted by Diosdado Macapagal reacted to a whole lechon de leche on the presidential table? If they were shocked this photo shows they were diplomatic and polite.

Often I am asked who among the people in Philippine history I want to interview. At the top of my list, of course, is Jose Rizal followed by Apolinario Mabini, and the hot-headed Luna brothers: Juan (the painter) and Antonio (the scientist turned military general).
