‘Tears in Biñan’

What happened to the Alberto House in the armpit of Biñan, Laguna? This was a 19th-century house that had seen better days. The house must have been built on a site that must have been good “once upon a time” because it is strangled today by commercial establishments and a swarm of public transport.

Whenever I watch TV weather reports that cite Pagasa or the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, I remember Fr. Federico Faura (1840-1897), founder of the Manila Observatory.

News of the "Mother Balangay" presently being excavated by the National Museum in Butuan made me wonder about the relation of our pre-Spanish vessels to the 8th century ones with outrigger or "katig" depicted on the walls of Borobodur.

Successful tourism branding in the 1970's made the Merlion the international icon or symbol of Singapore even if the Merlion has been on the seal of the "distinguished and ever loyal City of Manila" since 1596.

My Inquirer column today on a letter from Quezon to his daughter that makes us see a human rather than the fossilized image in monuments and textbooks.

A letter to Baby Quezon
opinion.inquirer.net
August is almost over and I have not written anything on Buwan ng Wika, the Philippine Revolution, or the assassination of Ninoy Aquino. Nothing on Manuel L. Quezon, nor the unending debate fired by those who still challenge the choice of Tagalog as our national language. I missed a deadline overwhe...

Its nice to be considered part of F. Sionil Jose's extended family and meeting my "long lost sisters" who were visiting from the U.S. Yesterday, in Solidaridad bookshop, I met another addition to the growing family, U.S. Ambassador Harry Thomas. Adding a few more pounds I will catch up with Frankie and Harry. (Photo by Luke Meinzen)

This little piggie made of bread came home from the Luneta rally with flyers on the ills of pork barrel. The Antipolo bakery that makes these pork-free lechon buns also makes crocodile bread! Di lang baboy, aba may buwaya pa!

In 2012 Josine Elizalde surprised me with this lechon birthday cake proving that you can have your cake and eat it too! This blast from the past is relevant today following the big turnout at the rally against the pork barrel in Rizal Park this morning.
