Nur Misuari’s mayhem in Zamboanga City resulted in some commentary about his place in Philippine history, as well as the ups and downs of his own story. Longevity is often a liability in history especially for those who start out right and end badly like Emilio Aguinaldo. Another example is Juan Pon...

This 19th century portrait of Miguela Henson by Simon Flores, preserved in the Bangko Sentral Collection, made me wonder how much shampoo and conditioner she needed and how she dried her hair. Women in those days would sometimes knot the end of their hair so it won't trail on the floor, pick up dust, or be stepped on.

We are always wary of people who claim to have a hotline to God. In the age before the cell phone, a time when we had rotary rather than pulse or tone phones, an academic from the University of the Philippines rose during a forum on Filipino spirituality and showed the audience a piece of paper with...

First time in my life I missed home and family abroad on the first day. Must blame it on my last brunch before departure: Bicol Express, Guagua longanisa, Chicken Inasal, La Paz batchoy, daing na bangus, Angus fried rice dalandan juice. Now that's comfort food, nationalism in the belly.

Memories of martial law
opinion.inquirer.net
Recent articles by Fernando del Mundo in the Inquirer and Maritess Vitug on Rappler provide Generation X a first-person account of the declaration of martial law in September 1972. This seems like ancient history to my students who were not even born yet when what can best be described as the Philip...

Was surprised at lunch at a restaurant today when it was paid for by a complete stranger. When I walked up to his table and thanked him, he said: "You don't know me, but I wish to thank you for being the teacher of my children and helping to mould them into what they are today."

Was surprised last week when my class stood up to greet me with a rousing cheer, it wasnt my birthday. Then a young man who sits in my class walked up with a present and said: "in behalf of all "Happy Teachers Day Sir"

Ah...the joys of being a teacher far outweigh its many challenges.

Finally met Ricky Lee and read his novels that inspired me to translate my work into Filipino. My first challenge will be how to render "Rizal without the overcoat" in Filipino?
