A Blogcation

BlogcationAs I mentioned Monday, I’m taking much of January off to edit the first book in my new Triple-D Ranch romantic suspense series as well as meet a February deadline for the second book. In the Interview Room – James Callan

James CallanToday I welcome James Callan to Terry’s Place. James writes mystery/suspense novels, his latest being Over My Dead Body.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?
I visited a morgue to be able to describe the place and the procedures involved in identifying a body found with no identification. While interesting, it was a bit unnerving to see the “tools of the trade.”

Plotter or Pantser?
A bit of both. Before I start a book, I need an idea of how the plot will develo...

Where it Began

July 2006I began blogging in July of 2006. That’s a long time, and a lot of posts. I thought I’d look back on my very first blog post.

Get a blog. Everyone’s got a blog. OK, so I now have a blog, too, although I’m not feeling any more “in” than I did before I started this.

What started me writing — the short answer: I ran out of wall space for needlepoint and needed a creative outlet.

The longer answer:

Not all THAT many years ago, my son was visiting, and as he flipped through the channels, he stoppe...

What’s Cooking Wednesday – Spicy Pecans

I found this recipe on Alton Brown’s site, and it was interesting because instead of baking the nuts, the recipe is prepared on the cooktop and it was quick. His recipe called for dried orange peel, but I used fresh since I didn’t have any dried.

Spicy Pecans

– t cayenne pepper (to taste: was a moderate heat level for me)

In the Interview Room – Kathleen Heady

Today I welcome Kathleen Heady to Terry's Place. Kathleen is the author of three mystery novels set in England and the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Clare. What is the strangest thing you've ever done in the name of research? When I was researching for my first novel, The Gate House, in the city of Lincoln in the UK, I had the opportunity to go on a roof tour of Lincoln Cathedral. We walked on catwalks between the lead roof and the vaulting visitors see from the cathedral floor. The vaulting sloped down below us, and we could see the small footholds left by the medieval builders to navigate the structure. I was able to use these details to create a harrowing scene in my book. What's on your desk? I like to keep my desk fairly organized. I have a laptop, speakers, a plastic placement that I bought in Lincoln to hold my coffee cup, a pile of papers and notebooks, a pen, and sometimes an orange cat who takes up any remaining space. You're going to start your next project. What's first? I take some time to daydream about the project, maybe go for some long walks, and make random notes about characters and what I want to happen in the story. Sometimes I will write a few short scenes which I may or may not use later. What's your biggest distraction when you should be writing? My biggest distraction is household tasks. I like dishes washed, beds made, and a tasty dinner planned and prepared. I sometimes have to force myself to let those things go so I can write. An astrologist friend once told me I would be a good writer if I could tear myself away from baking cakes! I've found some truth in that. What triggered the story behind your latest release? I was inspired to write Hotel Saint Clare after spending time on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Although the book is set in a fictional location, I used the culture and beach life to create the setting and atmosphere in the story. You're a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? I would definitely be multi-colored. I like variety, diversity and the unexpected in my life, and try to reflect that in my writing. I imagine this crayon as something like knitting with variegated yarn, when you never know how different colors will come together to create beautiful combinations. What do you read? Do you read different genres when you're writing vs. not writing? I read everything. I love mysteries, and probably read them the most, but I intersperse those with classics I have never read or I reread favorites. I finally got around to reading Catch 22 this fall. After a trip to Spain last summer, I have been enjoying reading Spanish and Latin American novels in translation. I only wish my Spanish were good enough to read the originals. I think reading a variety of genres can only improve the richness of my own writing. Dogs or cats? Or gerbils or birds? Or fish? I am definitely a cat person. I love other people's dogs, but cats fit more with my lifestyle since I travel as often as possible. I have two spoiled felines, Tang, the large orange one who likes my desk, and Púchica, a tortoiseshell whose name is Costa Rican slang that roughly translates as Today I welcome Kathleen Heady to Terry’s Place.
