Reflective Organ Newsletter September Equinox 2022: Gaia Placecaring System

This newsletter is published quarterly using a cycle of perspectives on the Integral City viewed from: Planet, People, Place and Power. The theme of this issue is Place

When the 4 Voices come together,  we create conditions to wake them up and grow them up, as a city that is able both to “placecare” and “placemake” (Hamilton, 2017).  Placecaring tends to arise from activating the Left Quadrants to:

Care for Self—activates Inner Growth of Individual (I)Care for Others—activates Inner Growth of Collective (We).

Placecaring then enables placemaking.  Placemaking arises from activating the Right Quadrants to:

Make Place for Self— activates Outer Growth of Home, Work/Economy (It)Make Places for All—activates Outer Growth of Infrastructure,Systems, Development (Its).

Queen Elizabeth II: Royal Placecarer

After the September 19, day of witnessing the funeral rituals and ceremonies to celebrate the life of Queen Elizabeth II it is impossible for me not to be quickened by her life – which I think was lived well despite being enveloped in incessantly disputing contexts of government, politics and conflicted nations. Even some of our Integral City Core Team hold different perspectives of her life because of cosmic views, beliefs and histories of empire, colonization and power over.

So I find myself somewhat isolated as the editor of this edition of the newsletter – because I saw Queen Elizabeth’s life as one of service to a planet of places and people.

She did not choose her sovereignty. But when her royal destiny unfolded out of the unexpected choice to abdicate of her uncle, King Edward VIII, that positioned her reluctant father King George VI on the British throne, Elizabeth II dedicated her life to service.

I view that her service was to a power greater than herself. A service to a planet of living systems. A service to a commonwealth of nations. A service to a Great Britain and devolved nations. A service to what I would recognze as the 4 Voices of every place – citizens, civic managers at all 4 levels of government, business/innovators and civil society. A service to family and friends. A service that I would even frame as embracing the Master Code of Care.

In the days since I drafted these words, when I even contemplated that Queen Elizabeth might exhibit the qualities of an honorary Meshworker of the Year (a proposal opposed by the selection committee) I have come to consider at the very least Queen Elizabeth II demonstrated all of the Integral City Intelligences embedded in our Global Positioning System (GPS) – in fact as she practised it perhaps we could consider these intelligences belong to a Gaia Placecaring System?

As a child of 9, in the Calgary Alberta Children’s Hospital, I remember the Queen’s 1959 visit (including to the Calgary Stampede)  that perhaps gave me a lifelong subtle affection for the Queen and her care for a world of places (of micro, meso, macro scales) and people around her? (I can certainly relate to the surprising essay by Umair Haque, a child of the dying Raj who wrote, “What the Death of the Queen Means to Me, and Why She Mattered”. I note that Umair was also decried by many of his usual readership despite his lead headline remarking “History Didn’t Turn Out the Way We Expected — And It’s Giving Us Whiplash”. )

The Queen’s death does mark the end of not just one era – but many eras (as considered by Alternative Global). So I find it natural to contemplate what were the resources that spanned multiple eras – both consecutively and simultaneously – she drew upon to fulfill a life of service with dignity and intelligence? Of course, I cannot know the inner life of the Queen and how that impacted her demonstration of the intelligences I project upon her. But I make respectful note of those who were close to her from her family to the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Dalai Lama, who attest to her genuine and frequent expressions of care, compassion and concern.

So in tribute to the Queen, I consider the evidence of how I see that she practised all Integral City intelligences. Her position gave her every opportunity to exert Power Over, Power With and Power As. She had every opportunity to revert to exerting only Power Over – but I submit that she used her intelligences to often demonstrate Power With and on occasions (I imagine more often behind the scenes) Power As.

The very symbolism of the crown itself is a vestige of the ideals of the Blue Meme in Spiral Dynamics Integral framework (to respect the value of order without imposing restrictions that harm individuals or groups; and honour the need for order that serves the entire system ). And I frame my observations within the context of the peace, order and good government that the best of the Blue Meme can bring to the world.

I view the Queen as a quintessential Placecarer and Placemaker. Her life may have been both divined and regulated more by her prescribed office and Christian faith than by our GPS – but certainly it was apparent that her calm and stability were grounded in deeply held values.

That being said, let us explore the ways that Queen Elizather II may have demonstrated the 12 Intelligences of the Integral City Global Positioning System.

Firstly the Queen was in a privileged position to gain Contexting Intelligences that revealed to her the realities of life in every place that depend on our service to the Ecosphere, the Emergent dynamics that characterize all life on Gaia, the Integral interconnections of self, others, place and planet and the Living impulse that intergenerationally weaves people, place and planet together.

The Queen’s Individual Outer intelligence was on public display through the relentless gaze of media, but it is the stories of conscious commitment to service in all ways that reveal that her outer strength was strongly founded on a deeply spiritual Inner strength. Both her family and religious advisors spoke of her spiritual devotion, faith, hope and charity practised every day.

The Queens’ Collective Social intelligence was globally informed by the duties she was called to with every red briefing box that arrived at her desk daily – revealing to her the secrets of government, international diplomacy and science at a level of complexity that was inescapably global. Her Collective Cultural intelligence was echoed by the hundreds of national leaders who had received her as a guest in their own countries. She invented the walkabout in defiance of all logical concerns for her safety and security so that she could literally touch and be touched by common everyday people. She parachuted with James Bond into the 2012 Olympics and shared marmalade sandwiches with Paddington Bear. So strong have her traditions of cultural humour and accessibility become, that the rest of her family is challenged to emulate her example looking for ways to bridge cultural divides with similar gestures of warmth, compassion and humanity.

The Queen designed her own Strategic intelligences to reach past expectations of traditional monarchy. Her commitment to weekly meetings with her Prime Ministers gave her recurring opportunities to expand her capacities for Inquiry, Meshworking and Navigation. Every one of her 15 Prime Ministers remarked on their audiences with her as valuable, insightful and caring. Like the astronauts returning to Earth, she used her privilege and position (literally standing on the balcony) to gain an “overview effect” she shared strategically with others.

Finally, the Queen was not only head of state but also head of the Church of England. She set a public example of devotion to God and Spirit and the Church’s own leaders spoke of her deep Christian values that framed both her public and private life. Our GPS would call this the Evolutionary intelligence that guided her reign from first investiture to last ritual ceremony.

With leadership capacities that matured over her lifetime and reign, the Queen became supremely informed, guided and even propelled – not because of – but despite the structures and systems of state. She seemed to have used her intelligences of both self-organization and innovation, to impact the world with a Royal finesse that has inspired leaders everywhere.

As the world is witnessing the ends of eras marked by Empire, Commonwealth, Industry and Globalization, Queen Elizabeth II’s passing provides an occasion to mark our grief for a world slipping away. Ostensibly the ritual and ceremony mourns the loss of a great person – but we suspect that it also marks the end of a flow of history from the past 7 generations.

The question is for the next 7 generations : Can we take guidance and inspiration from the life of Queen Elizabeth II to act with a Gaian Placecaring System of Intelligences to meet the challenges of becoming Placecarers and Placemakers for Gaia, united by a Master Code of Care?~~~

Consider Queen Elizabeth II further in the op ed below and this blog:

Queen of Gaia’s Reflective OrgansCoalescing Authority Power and Influence for Peace

CAPI – Coalescing Authority Power and Influence – a term coined by Ichak Adizes – is usually applied to organizational relationships and impacts.

But the death of Queen Elizabeth II may engender the grandest CAPI that has never been contemplated. For on a global scale, September 19, 2022 will see the greatest confluence of world leaders on one date in one place the world has ever seen.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II has invited those who wield the world’s authorities, powers and influence to a ritual celebration of the passing of one who held all three capacities – the authority of ancestry, the power of the crown and the influence of the royal audience.

The exercise of this CAPI ritual may also mark more than the ritual passing of a way of life. Presiding over the Commonwealth, United Kingdom and 6 royal palaces may also be coming to a real end. As one Queen passes, the new King may never again have the occasion to coalesce such CAPI.

For the Civic Managers, Business/Innovators and even 3rd Sector Leader who treasure the status quo and the vested interests they wish to protect, this occasion might likewise mark a proverbial closing of many doors that enclose a way of life so that new doors may open into new possibilities – unexpected or even unheard of.

Unitive Narrative for Cities

As we amplify the influence of the Integral City paradigm, we are co-midwifing a planet of Integral Cities through the emergence of Living Cities Earth. Our impulse is attracting co-creators (more than 25 at writing). Seeking ways to align our multiple, trans-generational, trans-cultural perspectives we have been inspired to weave our narrative into the Unitive Narrative developed by the Evolutional Leaders.

Regeneration sciences show that cities are impacting nine major Earth resources that constrain support for all life. New economic paradigms reveal the continuity of all life will depend on recalibrating the relationship between Earth constraints and human social justice factors.

The sciences of social and living systems reveal that human mental and spiritual wellbeing determines the quality of life in cities – measured both in terms of “care” for all life (planet, place, people, persons) and experienced as deep happiness when such care resonates, coheres and emerges at multiple scales. …

LCE views each city as a complex, adaptive, living, spiritual human habitat, in right relationship to its humans, bioregion, all other cities and the planet. We foster the emergence of a living ecosystem of cities — a rhizomic meshwork that augments our capacity to human well on this living Earth. We focus on life-affirming, future-creating, and opportunity-increasing ways to Interbe, with each other and with all life.

LCE embeds into this paradigm governance (education, health, justice, etc.) aligned as 4 levels of care (person, people, place, planet) and co-creates service with the intelligences of Nature unto the 7th Generation (150 years). LCE co-designs, cooperatively and collaboratively with all city-makers and city-carers offering maps, processes, toolkits, technologies and resources aligned with this Unitive Narrative.

As we imagine, explore, manifest, nurture and curate, through the empowerment of Interbeing (none of us is as smart as all of us) we feel fully alive while also contributing to the integral development of 10,000 cities, 7+ billion human beings and one living planet.

Celebrating Our Cities as Places of Care

Myrtle for long marriage, Rosemary for love, Oak for strength. Wreath flowers chosen by King Charles III for HM Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin.

September 21 marks the start of what Integral City calls the Place Quarter (from September 21 to December 20 ). In the northern hemisphere this quarter is our autumn time – the season of harvests and returning to school – almost like a New Year for events and organizations. This year with the death of Queen Elizabeth II, bringing together 500 world leaders to the city of London, it is a natural season of reflection. We can celebrate with rituals, ceremony and peaceful gatherings that counteract the brutalities of war – reminding us that humans have the potential to evolve beyond strife, conflict and tension.

As we participate in Peace Week and International United Nations Day of Peace (its 75th year) we sense a longing for peace that becomes our daily expectation and not an exception. What ways do you celebrate Place Caring? Place Making? Peace? How are Care and Peace a legacy for your family, neighbourhood, community, city, nation and ecoregion? How do you make meaning of your life in a way that serves all life?

Visit us on our Integral City Website , YouTube Channel and Blog or post a comment about how your city Place Cares and Place Makes on our sister City Makers Mighty Network.

Queen Elizabeth II: Royal Meshworker of Year 2022

After the September 19, day of witnessing the funeral rituals and ceremonies to celebrate the life of Queen Elizabeth II it is impossible not to be quickened by her life so well lived – in service to a planet of places and people.

She dedicated her life to service. A service to a power greater than herself. A service to a planet of living systems. A service to a commonwealth of nations. In service to a Great Britain and devolved nations. In service to all 4 Voices of every place – citizens, civic managers at all 4 levels of government, business/innovators and civil society. A service to family and friends. Her service was ultimately to the Master Code of Care.

Is it possible that Queen Elizabeth II is Integral City’s honorary Meshworker of the Year?

The Queen certainly practised all Integral City intelligences. She was a quintessential Placecarer and Placemaker. Her life may have been both divined and regulated by our GPS. Let us explore the ways.

UNITIVE NARRATIVE: LIVING CITIES EARTH (LCE)

As we amplify the influence of the Integral City paradigm, we are co-midwifing a planet of Integral Cities through the emergence of Living Cities Earth. Our impulse is attracting co-creators (more than 25 at writing). Seeking ways to align our multiple, trans-generational, trans-cultural perspectives we have been inspired to weave our narrative into the Unitive Narrative developed by the Evolutional Leaders.

To celebrate Peace Week 2022, we share below our working draft of Unitive Narrative for Living Cities Earth.

UNITIVE NARRATIVE: LIVING CITIES EARTH (LCE)

Until recently humans related to Nature as dominators of life entitled to control, manage, interbreed and command it. Human settlement generally focused on external bricks and mortar adapted to one of the world’s 17 geographies. Our cities were defined by land-based boundaries, nations, states, zones and streets as dictated by dominator hierarchies.

This paradigm was enshrined in city technologies, organizations, faith communities, interpersonal relationships and subjective self-sense. City systems were largely operated as cybernetic externally designed and managed systems. Such command and control patterns were embedded in education, health-care, emergency response, justice and social care systems, as well as the infrastructures that supported city transportation/mobility, communication, finance, resource distribution, energy, water, waste and food management.

Urban Planet/EU calculates Earth has 10,000 cities with more than 7 billion people in as many as 4.1 million “places”.

UN Habitat calculates that in 2030, 50% of human population will live in cities; already in 2022 90% of the developed world lives in cities.

The IPCC 2022 “Code Red” Report warns that climate change is caused by human activity – arising primarily from how we live in cities and how we produce and manage the resources that support human life in cities.

Cities must assume responsibility for their relationship to their bioregions and between cities sharing the same bioregion. This can redress the historical pollution and depletion of city-adjacent bioregions and create regenerative city eco-footprints. Bio-region regeneration can reduce the developed-world city use of resources requiring 3-5 planets to the developing-world city use of 1 planet or less.

The combination of city-making capacities of objective/actions, interobjective systems and city-caring capacities of subjective beliefs/responses and intersubjective cultures/relationships, creates an integral paradigm that reframes the city dominator hierarchy into a living, organic, complex, wholistic view of the city in regenerative relationship with its bioregion.

Such a tetra-integrated paradigm reveals cities have multiple intelligences energized by an evolutionary impulse at their core – like a kind of GPS – with nested developmental lifecycles that recalibrate city relationships with their bioregion(s).

Planetary scientists consider Earth/Gaia is a living system that has evolved all life on the planet – including humans – potentially as Gaia’s Reflective Organs as cities, with organizations as organelles and individuals as cells.

When contexted and underpinned by the cosmology of a Unitive Narrative this integral view of cities maps the fractal, holographic nature of human systems from the individual to the family/group/organization, to the city to the planet. Thus, both the agency of individuals and the influence of collectives create a unifying field effect – the relationship between ME/WE/All (including WE mapped as multiple nested interconnected organizations).

Peace Week: Unitive Narrative Releases Love in Action

Peace Week 2022 offers the occasion to transmute Pieces (fragments, divisions, separations) into Peace (alignment, wholeness, coherence) through an exploration of the Unitive Narrative.

An emergence from the Evolution Leaders, the Unitive Narrative tells a story of how Gaia has a story to tell that unites all of life.

Many stories humanity tells itself in media, with colleagues, between friends, across nations and among cities are about division, fragmentation and separation.

But what if we could wake up to know we are inseparable? What if this time of transformation gives us the opportunity to reinvent our story into one of wholeness and interconnection? What if unity is no longer an aspiration (as it has been for 77 years at the United Nations)?

What if we created a unitive narrative that different voices and cultures could share? What if our new story could link us up and lift us up – recalibrating our many pieces into Peace?

Our Peace Week webinar explores how a unitive narrative is releasing Love in Action. We will hear a new story that unites a world of voices and is on the verge of being adopted by the UN Unity Cluster. The unitive narrative proposes:

To paraphrase the great narrator of human experience, Joseph Campbell: The only narrative that is going to be worth thinking about in the immediate future is one that is talking about the planet and all beings on it. This new narrative will need to be grounded in widespread unitive consciousness, which includes a felt sense of unity with all life, unity with the ineffable source of all being, and unity with the evolutionary flow. (Read the whole unitive narrative here.)

First developed with the SDG Thought Leaders of the Evolutionary Leaders, this unitive narrative has been adapted for specific application to Integral City. Now the initiative of Living Cities Earth is using the unitive narrative for Cities to align 25 international members as they co-discover how to human well in harmony with nature.

During Peace Week, September 22, 2022, we will co-facilitate a discussion to explore how a unitive narrative can transform pieces into Peace.  We will apply the Unitive Narrative to Integral Cities and Living Cities Earth.

Queen Elizabeth II – Queen of Gaia’s Reflective Organs

During her lifetime Queen Elizabeth II was the queen of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth of Nations. Her affinities were clearly joined to Britain internally and externally.

At the same time, her 70 years of power, authority and influence gave her a natural position of “overview”. She had a sense of not only her own kingdoms, but her ties of blood, royalty and heads of state made her a natural witness of the world order.

When her own subjects became too ethnocentric (as in the Scottish referendum) she cautioned them to think bigger.

Perhaps the Queen represents a natural leader of those world citizens who have claimed their nationality to be “global citizens” – Gaians of a world order.

The Gaian Order would do worse than to honour a Queen who might rightfully assume leadership of the humans that James Lovelock called Gaia’s Reflective Organs.

For in her role, she not only honoured the endless ceremony her position demanded of her, but she also had the privilege of weekly reflection with 15 Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom. What other country offers to its leaders of country and/or state the opportunity to reflect on affairs with a private, discreet and dispassionate “overviewer” as they unfold?

Queen Elizabet II met every visiting head of state, enjoyed the inspiration of leaders of every sector from arts and sports to science and history, from at least 7 generations. She maintained an ongoing curiosity as monarch, a tolerance as spouse and a caring heart as parent/grandparent.

Even as the Commonwealth dissolved around her, her relationship with national leaders located in geographies and cultures where once the sun never set, gave her a natural position to appreciate multiple global perspectives. Perhaps only someone with her capacities deserves to represent a species with such evolutionary diversity in its very unity?

As queen of Gaia’s Reflective Organs, Queen Elizabet II seems to have had the disposition as well as the self-discipline and training to inspire a whole species to honour Gaia. Such an overview of our planet through the lens of a royalty who committed herself to a lifelong devotion to Gaia, would deepen our respect for one another and further Gaia’s evolution .

RIP, Queen Elizabeth II, our first Gaian Royal. May you not be the last.

Queen Elizabeth II – Coalescing Authority Power and Influence for Peace?

Will it be possible with all the preparation that this funeral procession has entailed to control the dynamic outcomes that might ensue from such a gathering. Or is it by design that a million unexpected outcomes might shift the meaning of coalescing authority, power and influence for ever more?

What will happen when one leader seated beside another on the bus to the cathedral makes a comment that opens doors to the resolution of a long misunderstanding?

What possibilities can ensue when one’s table mate reframes on an environmental conundrum that prevents disaster?

What comment overheard between two heads of state leads a third to realize that new options can be considered for regional supply chains?

What touch of empathy on one leader’s arm causes another to witness a compassion they had never suspected was there?

Whatever CAPI Queen Elizabeth II inspired in her life, it may turn out that it is in her death she has become the strangest attractor for Peace yet imagined on this Earth. For in honouring one person, the leaders of the world will be honouring all humankind. For they will be respecting the commitment, value and love of Life that she represented. And they will know that in acknowledging her strengths they are recognizing the same possibilities in each and all of them.

Queen Elizabeth’s life is an Ubuntu CAPI that says, I am (a great Coalescer) because you are (a great Coalescer).

The Red Ball Rolls Over Code Red

The Park Ecovillage Findhorn (TPE Findhorn) enjoyed another co-creation from Laura Pasetti in early 2022 – this time on a very large scale. Laura is the initiator of EcoTheatre – theatre performed in outdoor ecologies; Processions – theatre performed by walking around; and 7 Directions Theatre – theatre from the East, South, West, North, Above, Below, Centre.

Laura is an intimate observer of the life of communities – especially here at TPE Findhorn where she lives (when not visiting her native Italy or studying at Schumacher College). TPE Findhorn suffered many unexpected (and unintended) consequences as a result of the pandemic. Perhaps the most publicly painful outcomes were the 2 fires (set by an arsonist) that destroyed our Main Sanctuary and Community Centre. It was like having the spiritual and relational hearts ripped out of the community.

Meanwhile in the rest of the world, not only covid continued to impact people’s lives, but the human tragedies of climate change (and the Russian/Ukraine war) grabbed headlines reminding everyone about the fragility of life – individual, family, neighbourhood, community, organization, village/town/city and nation.

For an ecovillage like TPE Findhorn who practises 3 core principles and lives by a set of values-based guidelines, all these challenges ate away at the beauty, truth and goodness that are the essence of our community. What to do to bring awareness, insight and synergetic response to these life conditions? How can we dispute the IPCC when it issues a Code Red warning that challenges humans everywhere to recalibrate their relationship to their deep inner voice, their work as love in action and co-create with – instead of against – the intelligences of nature?

Laura Pasetti walks to centre stage of these challenging life conditions and invites 12 players from TPE Findhorn to co-create with her a dramatic performance titled the Red Ball. Laura’s way of calling forth the deep heart-based performers of her Questers (not mere actors but those in deep inquiry) is to offer the theme of the play – and invite Questers to write their own monologues. As animateur, Laura then weaves these together so in rehearsal, these co-creators discover the story that holds them all individually, collectively and as a community. And they unexpectedly co-create long enough to suffer the afflictions of covid invading their ranks not once but twice causing cancelled performances – thus requiring multiple re-scheduling of the play.

As audience I am surprised and inspired with the depth of performances, the meaning of the original comedy – the Red Ball is the essence of community – and the horrors of the tragedy that ensues when the Red Ball disappears. We see acted on the stage the worst defilements of the VUCA world. Volatility means no one trusts anyone else. Uncertainty means nothing can be depended upon. Complexity means we can’t figure out how everything is connected to everything else. Ambiguity means we cannot guess how things will turn out.

When we witness the Questers shout at each other, trash the stage (aka their town) with plastic refuse, be invaded by Guilt and Memory – we are confronted with the deep values of Mutual Trust and Respect and what happens when they are lost.

The cast takes the audience (300 strong in the Universal Hall) to what seems to be an irreversible tragic ending – but then asks everyone to stand and process silently from the Hall in the dark, to the very site of community conflagration and loss – the empty green field that has transformed from the cinders of the Community Hall.

There we see the 13 Questers gather around a table – laid out like the last supper – unexpectedly lighted by sports-field type lights – but more importantly unexpectedly enlightened by the children of the community. For every adult Quester we observe a child/youth Quester emerge as the generation who can restore the community to the heart of itself – and by doing so they manifest the miracle of the return of the Red Ball.

Leaders from the real community step into the final scene and intertwingle the fictionalities of the imaginary scene – reminding everyone that we are all Questers who care for themselves, each other, our community and the planet.

With delight the barriers dissolve between Questers, Audience and Community, while the Animateur looks as though it is quite normal to translate the EcoImpossible into the EcoAmazing.

Thank you, Laura Pasetti, for sharing your passion for a new emergent theatre from the 7 Directions. You ignite the spark of imagination so powerfully, none of us can resist becoming infected by Love!!!!

Audience Hunts for Artists

Laura Pasetti’s second initiative invited a multitude of artists in The Park Ecovillage Findhorn (TPE Findhorn) to install themselves in cosy community nooks for a series of 3 minute performances.

The covid/lockdown restrictions impacted artists of all kinds because they could not access their usual means of public engagement – galleries, theatres, restaurants and other venues were closed. Indefatigable Laura turned these restrictions inside out – inventing audience engagement by having them move from one Performance Art Installation to another.

We donated “hunt” fees, received a map of TPE Findhorn – and keeping our prescribed physical distance from one another and the artists we had an afternoon of joie de vivre. I viewed a teen poet performing by the reflective ball outside the Moray Art Centre. I listened to a violinist perform in someone’s accessible conservatory. I watched a family hearth form around an open fire while we heard ghost stories. I wandered over to the children’s playground and enjoyed a mini performance of a child’s nursery rhyme. I strolled into the Original Garden and found a player in full costume from an era long ago, emote Shakespeare in stentorian tones. I sat with a friend and closed my eyes while she recited Mary Oliver’s poem of Wild Geese (while real wild geese honked on Findhorn Bay).

The popularity of the first Artist Hunt guaranteed several return performances before lockdown was lifted. What is thoroughly delightful is that they continue into the present despite the reopening of our traditional artist venues – because hunting for art engaged the audiences not only with the creators and creative impulse – but they created conditions where the audience has as much fun interacting with themselves as they did the artists.

Catching a glimpse of someone you haven’t seen because of lockdown isolation gave us unexpected thrills of recognition – and the opportunity to have conversations in the outdoors encouraged us all to appreciate and care for our neighbours in ways we might not have valued before.

Laura created the conditions where art, artists and audience melded together in new interdisciplinary mixtures, new venues/locations, new sequences/performance times and new connections/synergies.

The Town Criers: How Long Covid Infected TPE Findhorn with Love

Early in the lockdown, leaders in the community realized that we needed a Volunteer Action Group (VAG) to keep in touch so that we knew people were okay behind their closed doors. Quickly VAG conversations imagined a “modern” version of the Town Crier.

Laura Pasetti, TPE Findhorn’s very own animateur of EcoTheatre literally jumped on her bicycle, added a top hat and unfurled a script. Then she pedalled around to 11 neighbourhoods with the key news that everyone needed to know. But although covid updates were urgent and important, perhaps the most vital spoken words were Laura’s tag line for the Town Criers: “Allow yourself to be infected by Love!!”

What started as Laura’s singular performance, soon became a rotating trio (with Annie Crawford and Roy Miles alternating as Laura’s companion performers) presenting on twice weekly rounds Tuesdays and Fridays. (If you can do the math – this group managed 11x2x 10 minutes = 220 minutes of performances per week!!)

These performances arrived at their 11 “EcoTheatre stages” in a variety of versions over the next year plus (eventually shifting to Fridays only). They spawned such audience devotion that certain neighbourhoods created Friday night gatherings that continue to this day (especially at the Barrels and Soilse).

Ode to an Eco-Animateur

Where were you in summer 2020, when you realized that you could only associate with the people in your household and when outside the home you were required to wear a mask and distance yourself 2 meters??!!

How could The Park Ecovillage Findhorn (TPE Findhorn) survive the impact to our economic life –  faced with closed FF trainings,  B&B’s, Phoenix Café, businesses,  cultural activities of all kinds – no singing, no dancing, no film, no theatre?

How were we supposed to spread the updates about the pandemic when we were being kept isolated by design? With perfect timing, the Findhorn Angel inspired several brilliant cultural responses to cheer the soul and connect the community. We wrote in a prior RB about David Robinson’s Zoom Taizé – now let’s appreciate 3 initiatives manifested by Laura Pasetti, that inspired vibrant connections.  I’ve told the story in a short blog series – with Extra Resource Connections … read on.
