There are many ways multiple Intelligences help to create emotional wholeness …we live [in/with/as ] moral, aesthetic intrapersonal, social, spatial intelligences.

Each intelligence develops through stages

We/I become full and whole.

In the fullness of unity of the whole,  life embraces multiple intelligences.

So what could this mean?

We have much opportunity as beings with AQAL capacities. We can develop and express multiple intelligences. There is no challenge or problem too small or big that we cannot use an Integral approach – the Integral Framework maps everything.

This enables us to gain a wholistic perspective and worldview.

We can work with others who have different multiple intelligences to expand our capacities even further.

When we remember Freud’s insight to move out of the objective “it” into the subjective “I” we expand our capacity to become more of who we are.

Gestalt practice enables us to clean up our shadows by having direct conversations with them (as “its” and “I’s”) and moving from dissociation to owning all of who we are.

The cycle of waking, growing, opening, cleaning, showing up gives us a natural path of development that allows us to awaken as a planet of Integral Beings – both individual and collective.

Now what can we do?

Here are 3 possible actions/responses we can take for Planetary Awakening:

Set an intention and create a practice to assess and grow our capacities for waking, growing, opening, cleaning and showing up. Map your intention one one or more of Integral City Maps.Start locally with group gatherings – including the 4 Voices –  to discuss issues or challenges using Integral lenses – then grow the gathering over time.Join with others to create Integral Conferences that over time grow along a path locally, regionally, nationally, continent-wide to develop globally as Gaia’s Reflective Organs. 

IEC 2023 Presences on Change Curve

This is part of a series of blogs reflecting on the program of Integral Europe Conference 2023,  whose theme was Planetary Awakening 2.0. This blog introduces the table of the Change Curve as reflected in the programs and presentations in the following blogs.

Integral Europe Conference 2023 (IEC23) provided an experience of how the Integral Movement explored the theme of Planetary Awakening 2.0 along a Gravesian Change Curve (as explained in prior blog here). Not only were the sessions and speakers themselves pointing to the sounds and situations of change, but the conversations and exchanges of participants reflected these sounds.

In this table I have hinted at the complexity levels in the change states – starting with Alpha at Healthy Green; Beta reverting to linear Orange; Gamma downshifting to ordering Blue; Gamma Traps fighting it out in red; Delta releasing into Yellow; and New Alpha hinting at Turquoise.

The table above reflects many of the topics and how I heard/saw the change lens that speakers explored.

It was my experience that the most powerful and optimistic voices came from women – Marianne Bozesan on the nature of consciousness and fractal time versus the fear of AI; Gail Hochachka and her perspectives on climate change engaged through peoples’ consciousness (and not just techno-matter); and the ever-powerful voice from the subtle realms of Shaman Brigitte.

I think the change curve analysis shows the dynamic state of the Integral Movement in a world of ever-increasing dynamic change. We continuously face the challenges to meet people where they are at and the need for us to build capacity as a daily practice.

The Sounds of Change as a Planet of Living Cities Awakens

This is part of a series of blogs reflecting on the program of Integral Europe Conference 2023,  whose theme was Planetary Awakening 2.0.

This blog introduces the sounds of Change and the Change Curve as the pattern that curates following blogs.

The IEC 2023 theme was Planetary Awakening 2.0.

As I attended the conference which had more than 200 presentation – including my own (Awakening to a Planet of Living Cities) – I could hear the distinctive sounds of Change as attendees interacted with presenters, ideas, experiences and each other – along a Change Curve I first learned from Clare Graves and Spiral Dynamics integral.

Clare Graves (Hamilton, Book 1) proposed that humans develop along a trajectory of progressively complex capacities. He described a double helix where individual and cultural development were intertwined with the life conditions (comprised of all the influences from climate, geography, ecology, history, culture, etc.). (Elsewhere I have even explored the possibility of a triple helix where feminine is intertwined with masculine and both with life conditions (Hamilton, ILR).

Graves terminology used letters of the alphabet to indicate levels of development where the first letter referenced the person and the second referenced the life conditions – AN, BO, CP, DQ, ER, FS, GT, HU). Altogether he described 8 levels.)

Each of the levels calls forth a change curve of stages: Alpha, Beta, Gamma (Trap), Delta, New Alpha (now popularized in a number of change theories including Adizes Corporate Lifecycles, Scharmer’s U Theory, Kegan’s change model, Kubler-Ross’ grief cycle, 3 Horizons).

In Living Cities.Earth we have proposed that the stages of change can be correlated to the states of happiness because each of the stages emerges from tensions that vibrate at different states of coherence. I introduce them here as a happiness or response pattern by which we can curate my experiences and others’ interactions with the IEC2023 program.

Alpha and New Alpha are likely the happiest / most positive response stages in the Change curve – because the human (whether individual or collective) is well aligned with their context. The “sound” of the change state in Alpha and new Alpha is one of a happy “hummmmm.”

Happiness becomes more difficult at Beta because life conditions shift the context of the person’s capacity for responding effectively – increasing tensions and eliciting audible “uh oh’s.”

The Beta stage – is characterized by the sense that something is not quite right. We ask how can we get back to Alpha”? So, Beta can be periodically happy when possibilities exist for the return to Alpha – but equally quickly can disappear when one is forced down the uncertain curve of change to the stage of “Gamma” – where unhappiness tends to abound because of the VUCA conditions of life (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous). The sound here can be “Oh Damn.” Nothing is certain or clear and everything seems to be changing all the time. If the change situation devolves into a “Gamma Trap” (where the sound darkens into “Oh Shit!) – then it will be very difficult to find happiness in individuals or collectives who feel themselves with no good options. Instead of happiness the feeling will likely be of fear, intimidation, anger, worry, despair, depression – the antithesis of happiness.

Few people are happy or positive when faced with a shift that is not only seemingly unmanageable – what Graves called a Gamma Trap – but which is a real life threat – the stark opposite of a happy/stable state.

Until the individual can learn a new path out of Gamma or the Gamma Trap into Delta, the state of happiness will be elusive. But when the discovery is made that removes the block and reopens the flow of change, the surge of joy and happiness at Delta can be so strong that it is experienced as elation, with commensurate sounds of “WOW” and bodily freedom as the weight of Gamma is removed from life.

After the surge of release, the new learning in Delta must be consolidated and integrated (transcending into a new stage that at its most coherent recalibrates all earlier stages and includes them in a new understanding of the world). In this final act of stage development the change experience has come full cycle and a New Alpha emerges with a “hmmmm” of happiness once more in the air.

In the fabric of happiness and positive perspectives, the rhythms and cycles of change are constantly flowing from and between individuals and groups, adding textures of discernment and healing to the 4 realms of bio-psycho-cultural-systems realities and the circles of care that embrace and elicit happiness and contentment with life – including the IEC 2023 Conference (read on to see how I apply this framework to the sounds of Change I heard around me at the conference.)

Integral Cities Islands of Calm 2023 Subtle Activism for Ukrainian Cities

This is a Meditation in support of cities, towns and villages in the Ukraine.

Some of us have been inspired by the Ukrainian Ecovillages and the story they tell in this video about The Green Road that Global Ecovillages Ukraine have offered to city dwellers to find refuge and a new life.

As you start this meditation consider in this last week: What/how/where are you aware of turbulence in cities around the world – but especially ones you have connected with or heard on the news.

I was moved by my work with Living Cities.Earth this week – where key Russian co-founders reported connecting with colleagues in the Ukraine – and started to ask how can we help rebuild the cities in the Ukraine? So I was inspired to offer this Meditation as a start. So thanks so much for joining us today.

We start with a quotation from Eileen Caddy’s Guidance (Dec 30 Shine Forth My Little Lights). Eileen, one of the co-founders of Findhorn Spiritual Community and Findhorn Foundation said:  

Never sit back and feel there is little or nothing you can do to help the world situation. There is a tremendous amount you can do to help by the work you do on the inner in radiating Love and Light out to individuals, to countries, to nations and to the whole world. Day by day you do this and because you do not see any outer results you wonder if the work is really any good and if it does help. Let Me assure you that this work which is being done on the inner is simply tremendous. lt is holding the whole world in balance, so never cease, never let up in any way but carry on faithfully.

See the whole Network of Light all over the world doing this inner work, see every tiny spark of Light gathering together bringing more and more Light into the whole world situation. If each individual does its part and does it in faith, without always wanting to see immediate results, so does the Light grow brighter and brighter. So shine forth My little Lights until the darkness has been transformed and all is Light.

Get comfortable in your chair – with feet planted on Earth, sense Sky / our Source above you. Take a breath and feel the connection of the Centre of Universe right down though your spine, connecting you to the Centre of the Earth.

  Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Just breathe calmly and naturally.

Let’s start by bringing our awareness and presence wherever you are – in whatever human habitat where you live – be it a village, town, or city of any size – from micro settlement to megacity. Be aware of yourself and the place that holds you. Be aware of all of us and all our places. Let us include those who want to be with us but for whatever reason – whether that be conflict, climate, covid or other challenges or celebrations of Equinox or Spiritual Ritual – are remote from this session today (where we are creating special Islands of Calm to benefit Ukrainian cities).

  Let’s embrace the 4 Archetypal Voices of our cities – Citizens, Civic Managers, Business and Innovators, the 3rd Sector or Civil Society. Let us acknowledge all the cities towns and villages in the Ukraine we know of personally or hear on the news – Kyiv, Kherson, Kharkiv, Bakhmut, Mariupol (and others you may name to yourself) . Let’s acknowledge and bless all who are caring and acting for Gaia’s wellbeing in these places, ecoregions, nation and their connections to neighbours, cultures and geographies.

  Now feel and experience in and around you the Light and Love of your unique beingness, the Light of your individual sacredness, however you envision and experience that. Let that Light arise and hold each of us in its Grace and loving embrace…. Sense that Light filling all aspects of yourself, your cells, the energies that flow through them, your feelings, mind, subtle body, soul and spirit, your whole presence from the most particular part of yourself to the most expanded. Rest in the Light and Love and Grace of this presence of your Self, and in the Light and Love and Grace of the sacred that lies at the heart of all things.

Feel and experience yourself also embedded in the life and being of the Earth and her human habitats…even those that seem physically far away – let us sense how we are connected with them because we are a generative part of the biosphere, a generative part of the noosphere, a generative part of the subtle dimensions, a generative part of the spiritual dimensions, a generative part of a vast planetary exchange of Life and Love and Light.

  Now begin to focus on the qualities and energies you would like to bring to this work of subtle activism for Ukraine’s’ cities, towns and villages today…   Maybe a presence of Peace, Unity and Love … service, belonging and regeneration … maybe caring for Others, Place and Planet … maybe healing, wholeness and community … maybe compassion, grace, forgiveness … Maybe a combination of qualities. Maybe even a sense that all is evolving – even though we may not see how –  for Gaia’s wellbeing…

Whatever qualities or energies are calling you, step into them now, as much as you are able. Bring the felt sense of them into your heart and mind and body. Let yourself become a living presence of these qualities.

  Now imagine the felt sense of these expanding outwards to form a sphere of energy around you, around us, around Ukraine’s cities. This is an Alliance Space, a collaborative space.

 Into this space, invite Allies in today’s work of subtle activism, beings who are working with different elements of Ukraine’s human habitats. I am going to name some of these beings Angels – you may have another name for them – they are all welcome by whatever name. I am going to start by calling in our Ancestors. I call in the Landscape Angels, Gaia’s Local Representatives. Angels of our human habitats and bioregions … Angels of our city, town or village associations, agreements, governments. The Angels of our cultures, communities, outreaches and our families. The Angels of our Seasons and Cycles. Beings from the 4 Directions. Beings of Nature, Earth, Air, Fire, Water. The Sidhe. In particular, open to the presence of: the Soul of the Ukraine, the Souls of her human habitats, the Soul of Humanity and the Soul of the World – those presences that hold an unfolding promise and potential of what Ukraine and the world can be…

Sense these Allies with you, with us, with all Beings in Ukraine’s places… let our energies blend in a collaborative field, and sense that field deepening and broadening as we do this.

  From this space, hold Ukraine’s cities/towns/villages, bio-regions and nation at this time, allowing the energy and presence of this field to hold and bless what is happening and unfolding… in your heart and in your imagination touch or hold whatever situations or people or groupings call your attention…

And for the next while, just hold the presence and energy of this collaborative field clearly and steadily in yourself, allowing it to be a resource and blessing wherever it is needed in the Ukraine….

  And we will pause here so we can do this together in silence ……

  Now begin to bring this work to a close…. Give thanks and appreciation to all involved… then bless and release all who have helped and been part of this field supporting our cities, towns and villages…

Then consciously step out of the Alliance space and return your attention to your own energy field and presence… bring your awareness back to your body, to the Light that fills it, that supports your boundaries and your unique presence and identity. Experience yourself grounded and balanced, and when you are ready, open your eyes and return your awareness to your room.

Purpose: Crossroads of Personal Joy & Gaia’s Need

The Roots of City Peace seem to emerge from the discovery of one’s Purpose – sitting at the crossroads of one’s Personal Joy and Gaia’s Greatest Need. In these days, Gaia has an extreme need for an Equinox of positive energies that can counteract the VUCA disinetgration caused by war, climate change and pandemics. 10 years ago we wrote about the Power of Purpose and how it can release Energy and Prosperity (aka Flourishing) for individuals, families and organizations – the cells and organelles of Gaia’s cities.

Ingredients for Honey in the Human Hive

What is the equivalent for the Human Hive of producing 40 pounds of honey in the bee hive?

That is the question that I have been inquiring into through the lenses of bio-psycho-cultural-social-mimicry.

In the generative seed bed of my recent visit to San Francisco, glimpses of the ingredients for producing “Honey” in our Human Hive  Honey have emerged. It has to do with the conjunction of Passion, Priority, Purpose and Prosperity.

I have learned that it is the symbiotic relationship of the Bee Hive’s survival (or thrival) through Pollination of Plant Life that meets their need to survive and thrive. Bee Hives can “measure” their success through the production of 40 pounds of honey per year. This symbiotic relationship generates enough Energy (aka Prosperity) to not only fulfil their Purpose but to create renewable energy sources for next year.

In the Human Hive – our thriving arises from feeling fully alive – this Passion is expressed as Joy. Our great Purpose arises from the fulfilment of Caring Service to the world’s Priorities or Needs. This is just as much a symbiotic relationship with Gaia, as the bees have with her plants. What is more, it generates the same kind of Energy (which we call Prosperity) that rewards us for acting from Joy and creates renewable Energy to continue to meet Gaia’s bio-psycho-cultural-social Needs on an ongoing cycle.

It seems to me these ingredients and the recipe for making Honey in the Human Hive are fractal – that is they occur at every level of  scale in the Human Hive (individual, family, organization, neighbourhood, city).

It is the fundamental energy equation of the Master Code:

To Care for Ourselves (through Passion/Joy)To Care for Others (in living our Purpose in service to Priorities/Needs)To Care for this Place (as a natural result of Prosperity)To Care for this Planet (as we align the Prosperity engine around Gaia’s wellbeing Needs)

Is this too simple?? Maybe just a BFO (blinding flash of the obvious)? Maybe just another step along the path for Human Hives to achieve the double sustainability system that the honey bee hives have created in their service to Gaia?

Waking up the Human Hive: Recalibrating with HappinessWhen we place all the locators of our GPS compass in the service of our cities, we have the very real opportunity of re-calibrating our intentions, expectations and outcomes for cities.

Working together as 4 Voices of the City, we have the intelligence to go beyond the Smart City beloved of Civic Managers and Citizens, beyond the Resilient City beloved of Business and Civil Society into the Knowing Field of the Integral City – beloved by the interdependent Meshwork of 4 City Voices in the Integral City.

Happiness as Evidence of Success

Now we can ask, how can we use the Integral City compass for aligning performance that produces well being and re-calibrating our intentions, expectations and outcomes for cities?  Where is the evidence or the sweet spot that aligns Smart, Resilient and Integral intelligence’s for optimum living in the Human Hive? What is the equivalent target of 20kg of honey to measure well being in our cities?

As simple or as trite as it may sound – I think our friends the honey bees suggest an obvious location for such evidence. Remember they used a very practical measure to trigger change – namely, their pheromones that measure depression. In humans we can also measure that – when it is in a positive state, we call it happiness. And Happiness Studies have become early evidence for the wellbeing of individuals, cities, cultures and nations. (GNH, Dalai Lama, Happy Citybook, Happiness Studies, etc.). This kind of happiness is not merely ego or self-centered, nor is it ethno or regional centered, nor even merely place or planet-centered. Instead this indicator integrates all the scales of possible happiness that arise when our decision sets are aligned. This happens when we live the Master Code – choosing to take care of our selves, each other, our cities/places and the planet all at once – simultaneously.

I suggest to you that the bees have modeled for us the great value of why happiness is the ultimate feedback loop for re-calibrating our cities because it ultimately measures the relationship between Caring Capacity and Carrying Capacity. We must learn to notice when our BEEings are depressed and what we must do to steward all life in our eco-regions and planet. We must listen and respond to the Evolutionary Intelligence at the center of our compass which has offered a path of Caring Capacity (a gold dot to locate us on our GPS maps??) and by now also offered many means to move the path of Carrying Capacity beyond traditional cities to Smart Cities to Resilient Cities. Out beyond all these there is a Knowing Field where you will find the Integral City.

In closing this blog series, I would ask Smart City and Resilient City experts – what roles can you play as Civic Managers and Business Innovators, as Citizens and Civil Societies to build on the potential of Smart and Resilient Cities and working together co-create the Knowing Field of the Integral City? This time in our history is an opportunity to discover that Care lives in the center of that Knowing Field.

I believe, that together we can co-create the next generation of IT – the Integral Technology that will enable us to implement the Master Code. – This Evolutionary Intelligence of Care that is so needed by our Planet of Cities.

I invite you to dance towards that Knowing Field so that our Human Hives can add the distinctive capacity of Care so that Earth’ cities can work together to create an Integral Ecology.  By aligning our Caring Capacities we will naturally expand the Carrying Capacity of our cities.  We may also  take the critical next steps to avoid the human version of Colony Collapse Disorder that our dancing cousins the bees have warned us about. I will meet you on the dance floor!

Our Evolutionary Journey to the Gaia’s Code of Care for a City of Peace

Gaia in her wisdom has created us as a fractal of her patterns. Like her we have organs made from the substances of her creation: we are bone of her bone, flesh of her flesh, heart of her heart and mind of her mind.

So, in contemplating a City of Peace we must first respect that it will not just be a built environment – not just the bones of streets and buildings or the energy of communication systems. But what we create will have a home on what we call Gaia’s bio-regions. Within a watershed, geo-shed, bio-shed, we must respect the resources and honour the boundaries of the ecology that Gaia creates for us to plant the seed of a new creation.

As Gaia expresses an ecological intelligence in all her creations, so we must reflect that intelligence in creating a City of Peace that lives in its bio-region with Intelligences of Ecology, Emergence, Integral Awareness and Aliveness. I call these Contexting Intelligences.

Gaia delights in the creation of Individual uniqueness and expression – reflected in each of us as individuals with inner consciousness and outer behavioural capacities. A City of Peace would enable Individual Intelligence to shine without repressing the expression of other individuals.

Gaia also knows from her deep history that Collective Intelligence emerges when individuals agree to work, live, play, co-create together. The co-creation of Cities of Peace must be an ultimate expression of Collective Intelligence where cooperation and collaboration optimize Aliveness.

Gaia has the wisdom to open the doors of Strategic Intelligence, encouraging us to Inquire and ask good questions – like what is a City of Peace? She shows us through Ecological Intelligence how in a City of Peace to Meshwork the foundational functions of structures with the self-organizing functions of ongoing connections and exploration. She also gifts us with Navigational capacities so that we can create Vital Signs Monitors in our Cities of Peace that enable us to set targets for wellbeing and steer a course to achieve wellbeing goals and objectives.

Gaia has the impulse of Evolutionary Intelligence to encourage us to grow Cities of Peace as her Reflective Organs that continue to grow, develop and evolve dynamically.

But as Gaia evolves she uses the wisdom of complex adaptive living systems to seek coherence, resonance, and emergence. This can enable all her Cities to be Reflective Organs that can be at Peace with one another.

Gaia even gives us the capacities to create an Operating System for our Reflective Organs. It is a Code of Peace that I call the Master Code of Care. This Operating System  enables Peace as we practise it. We must Care for our Selves, so that we can Care for Others, and together Care for our Places – or Cities of Peace – and altogether we can Care for our Planet, Gaia.

This Master Code of Care enables development and evolution of Cities of Peace within the Ecology of Gaia.

Connecting with Community in 21st C: Gaia’s Reflective Organs

This is a series of blogs inspired by the Edinburgh International Centre for Sustainability and Peace, 2023 Forum: Connecting with Community in the 21st Centure: Spiritual, Social, Policy Perspectives. This was delivered by Marilyn Hamilton, March 1, 2023.

Because we are so connected through Communities of Interest, Living, Culture , Practise and Nature – in Findhorn spontaneous manifestations arise:

Spiritually, Socially and Politically our community is a fractal of all the connections that arise from all 4 quadrants of Integral City and traced on our 5 Maps.

I have called this the Fractal Heart of a new global calling – Living Cities.Earth. And it is resonating with David Gershon’s Peace on Earth Zones and other global emergences like the Unitive Narrative that has even been adopted by the UN and Living Cities.Earth.

We are re-appreciating that Connecting in Community not only means that the Local is Global and the Global is Local but even that the Kosmic-Global-Local is the new connectivity we need in the 21st century. That has always been the strength of the Ecovillage Findhorn’s Connectivity in Community.

All who visited, learned, lived here have felt a higher calling to be of service to the Planet. And for Communities in the 21st century – that is what I believe we are called into – to know that we are Gaia’s Reflective Organs – that all the ways we connect through interests, living, culture practise and Nature – must be in service to the wellbeing of our beloved planet Gaia.

Let us close by reiterating Gaia’s Code of Care – as it is central to the connectivity of Community in the 21st C – a Journey to Spiritual, Social, Political Wholeness for a Group of People.
