Teen "forks" friend during fight for Mickey Mantle card

Teen "forks" friend during fight for Mickey Mantle card:

From The Patriot-News:

A 17-year-old Halifax boy is accused of jamming a fork in another teen's arm this month during a fight over a Mickey Mantle baseball card, state police said.

The boy, whose name was not released because he's a juvenile, reacted "without thinking," police said.

Yes, but what Mantle card was it? Only a few years could truly send some collectors to grab a fork in defense.

On what would have been his 176th birthday, some advice from Old Sam Clemens for journalists of the past, present and whatever future the profession has, courtesy of the Mental Floss article linked to below:

— "Write without pay until somebody offers to pay you. If nobody offers within three years, sawing wood is what you were intended for."

— "Only presidents, editors and people with tapeworm have the right to use the editorial 'we'."

— "I don't give a damn for a man who can spell a word only...

"I have a recurring nightmare where I'm working somewhere, and it's one minute past deadline, and my computer screen is completely blank. But I've always said that I don't believe in writer's block, because my father worked in a factory most of his life and I don't think he ever had 'factory block.'"

- Sports Illustrated senior writer and extreme blogger Joe Posnanski wrote that line earlier this fall in this article about the great Buck O'Neil. Have to agree with him. I have started days...

When I first saw this pic of the Spider-Men walking up 42nd Street in Manhattan, my first thought was, "Oh no, to save the Broadway show they've set The Clone Saga to music." Not quite. The New York Times article that accompanies the picture says that after opening as a very public disaster, the $75-million musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" has found the light. Besides, we all know that the sequel should be based on Spider Island. (Photo by Chad Batka for The New York Times.)

I was there. Still have the tickets and "Major League record holder" t-shirt to prove it. It is the pride of my closet. My seat was to the right in this picture, right there where the image starts to warp. When I close my eyes I can still remember what Eric Young's homer looked like from that seat, and what Mile High sounded like.

Go-Bot: Optimus Prime, I Presume?

Go-Bot: Optimus Prime, I Presume?:

A St. Louis-area paper gets its wires crossed and has to apologize for confusing two titans of the 1980s toy aisle, mistaking Voltron for Optimus Prime. Not all robots are the same. Some are more than meets the eye.
