Sixty-six years before Eric Young hit the first regular season major-league homer in the time zone's history there was baseball at altitude. I wonder if Paige complained about Gehrig hitting in the thin air.

On the penultimate page of the current issue of Chew (No. 22), comes a new take on the sportswriter archetype. He enters the story here as a burly sort with calloused knuckles, raccoon eyes (and not from those hockey writer special 6:15 a.m. flights), and, you'll soon see, a stack of zombiefied ballplayers behind him. Explaining Pujols' free agency to a 5-year-old

Explaining Pujols' free agency to a 5-year-old:

One morning in May, The Post-Dispatch ran a photo illustration on its front page that depicted Albert Pujols in a Chicago Cubs uniform. This confused and unnerved by son, who had just turned 5. Ever since he's been consumed by this notion that Pujols could — gasp! — play for another team. He has waffled from saying that he would find a new Cardinal to cheer to suggesting he would find a new team to root for if Pujols leaves. I tried to explain f...
