277/366 The teams lined up for the national anthem before baseball’s first ever wild-card playoff game. On the screen is Chipper Jones, who as it turns out is playing in the last game of his career. Cardinals won, 6-3, in a bizarre, wooly game that involved three errors, three game-changing calls by umpires, one protest, and a 19-minute delay to clean up debris thrown on the field by fans. This photo is from more peaceful times. (Taken with Instagram)

276/366 This is Cardinals batting practice in “This is Braves Country.” On the eve of baseball’s new wild-card playoff game, the defending champs hold a brief workout during a gorgeous afternoon in Atlanta. The shadow creeping there may be a factor tomorrow. (Taken with Instagram)

275/366 It’s never a good sign when the newspaper you write for and just finished writing for beats you home from a night at the ballpark. It’s after 3 a.m., the Cardinals clinched about two hours ago, and we only just finished covering it all for the paper … Well, the paper’s web site. Because if the paper beats me home it’s a safe bet the stories I just filed aren’t there. (Taken with Instagram)

274/366 The Great Contact Catastrophe of 2012. Attempted to run an update the iPhone demanded and was horrified to find out it had zapped all my pictures from this Project 365+ and all of my contacts. When I did as Apple instructed and ran the “restore” only one contact survived: the wife’s. There is something fitting about that. Not even a complete sweep of the phone’s memory could take her number from my phone. (Taken with Instagram)

273/366 Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker returns to his perch during batting practice after missing more than a week to recover from a mini stroke. Baker missed his team clinching the division title and a no-hitter by Homer Bailey. He rejoins team for final series of the regular season, here in St. Louis. (Taken with Instagram)

272/366A game ball from the 1984 U.S. Olympic team’s tour. This was dropped off at Busch today (Sept. 30) to have Mark McGwire, a member of that Team USA, autograph it. We remarked that the ball is older than all six of McGwire’s kids. (Taken with Instagram)

270/366 Major League Baseball apparently has yet to meet an event that it cannot logo-fy. This greeted the Cardinals and Nationals as they converged at Busch Stadium for the weekend series between two team’s aching to clinch. Pennant race? Pennant? What the heck? With the advent of a second wild card what pennant exactly are team’s racing for this week? A pennant was a league championship last I checked. Maybe I’ve got that wrong. But it sure seems like these days clubs are just playing for a...

269/366 On the eve of the final weekday of the daily Times-Picayune in New Orleans, I found a stack of newspapers, each issue capturing a moment from my career — covering LSU baseball’s national championship for the Pic on the left, a cover story for the Rocky Mountain News’ Hardball insert next, Baseball America, and then the Post-Dispatch up to the “No-Hitter*” headline. 268/366A family picture drawn by the boy wonder at school. I’m the one with glasses. My friend says that the arms raised either means we just scored a goal or we’re getting ready for a group hug. I think we’re auditioning to be NFL replacement refs. (Taken with Instagram)
