This is the last week of the Brenda Novak Online Auction for Diabetes Research.

There are items for readers, for writers (including agent and editor evaluations and author critiques), and people who like to buy stuff (Cheeses of the World is only $96.00 right now! If I had any spare money, I would be all over Cheeses of the World.)

My agent has offered a Proposal Critique here, and it will be worth every penny.

The SF/Fantasy Section is here.

And here are my three auctions: An autographed hardcov

I found out yesterday that one of my cousins died. He was 59, and was recognized by the Hemophiliac Foundation as being one of the oldest survivors of hemophilia. He was always a very upbeat, happy person despite all the health issues. He married my cousin Nancy when I was about eleven years old, and I remember older relatives telling her not to marry him because the hemophilia meant he wouldn't live long. That was 34 years ago; they had two kids and he had a very successful career as a phar

Had a pretty good holiday weekend. Friday we went to see Night at the Museum, and I enjoyed it a lot. Then we dodged intermittent thunderstorms to have a cook-out on Sunday for nine people, and had grilled hamburgers, chicken, homemade potato salad, fruit salad, and brownies. Yesterday we went to see Star Trek again with a couple of friends who hadn't seen it yet, and it was just as awesome the second time around. Then I ended up taking a surprise nap, and woke up cuddling with a cat, a book

This is that weekend where everybody is off at a con having fun without me, isn't it? There's WisCon, BaltiCon, MediaWest, etc.

Bill Crider reviews Hit List: the Best of Latino Mystery anthology.

A little good news for publishing from DearAuthor: Bookstores Show Signs of Health

I was hoping the magnolia tree would bloom all at once this year, since we've had a lot of rain, but it's being more conservative about it:

And Pretty Cat Pictures

Tasha is the only cat I've ever had that will smile for the camera.

[info:] writercon (which is coming up July 31-August 2 in Minneapolis, Minnesota) posted a Q&A with me here.

For more info on the con, their web site is WriterCon.

The other cons I'll be at this year:

June 26-28, 2009. ApolloCon 2009, in Houston, Texas.

August 14-16, 2009. ArmadilloCon 31, in Austin, Texas.

I really wish I could afford to do World Fantasy this year, but that's not going to happen.

I have an ulcer, (probably the stress kind as opposed to the bacterial kind), but I think I've caught it pretty early. (Going to Jose's for dinner on Friday and then Casa Rodriguez for breakfast Saturday probably helped expose the problem.) I had one once before several years ago, and it went away after the 14-day Prilosec treatment. But it means that for a while I need to try to cut way back on tea, chocolate, and any foods with chile or chile powder, which are the three mainstays of my diet.

Neil Gaiman's post on entitlement issues: George R.R. Martin Does Not Work For You

Dealing with people with entitlement issues is no fun, whether you're a pro writer, an agent, a publisher, an editor, or someone running a fan web site, or a fan writer being told that she should change fandoms and write to the reader's preference and not her own, a fan artist or pro artist, a web comic creator, a convention committee. It shows up everywhere, and I think it's even more annoying for people who are

We went and saw Angels and Demons last night, and really enjoyed it. It was so much better than The Da Vinci Code (which we saw on DVD, and which made me want to simultaneously laugh hysterically and reach through the TV to strangle Dan Brown). Angels and Demons was a good fast-moving suspense thriller; the history part was still all crap, but the story was really good.

I've been reading The Wizard's Daughter by Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters, and it's okay. It was originally published in 1
