Conventions

WriterCon is coming up this weekend in Minneapolis, and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll be getting there late Thursday afternoon.

The main program I'll be doing is at 2:00 on Friday, Making the Leap: Writing as a Career Choice: A talk/question and answer session on writing as a career and the basics that people starting out as writers need to know. How to submit stories for publication, how agents work, what the publishing process should be like, scams to avoid, publishing myths and mi

Link from [info:] arkessian: Justine Larbalestier: Ain't That a Shame In the last few weeks as people have started reading the US ARC of Liar they have also started asking why there is such a mismatch between how Micah describes herself and the cover image. Micah is black with nappy hair which she wears natural and short. As you can see that description does not match the US cover.

Missions Unknown has an interview with my friend, writer Jayme Blaschke. And a great photo of him in his Green Arrow outfit.

And there's a call for submissions for this Superhero Poetry Anthology.

I am not at ComicCon, and other people are, and I hate all of them.

Jim Hines: Sexism is Not About Your Ego: There are people, myself included, who have been watching to see how Realms would move forward under new management and whether this trend would change. To see whether Realms would continue the boobs and chainmail cliches. We got one out of two.

In the comments, [info:] bearmountain makes a good point about the covers for Black Gate, that they depict intriguing scenes and landscapes (without naked women) that make you want to read the sto

We had a huge storm yesterday evening, with a couple hours worth of pouring rain and a tornado warning. I think it was about seven miles away to the southeast of our house. It got scary for a while, with the pine trees outside the second floor windows getting all bendy and limbs coming off and slamming into the roof. Apparently the TV station less than a mile away got hit by lightning twice. Yikes.

Hopefully it'll rain again today; we have a lot of drought to make up for.

Post from Bookends, LLC: Good Enough is Never Enough:
I will tell you right now that "it's good enough" will never, ever cut it in this business, and it's not just the writing that always needs to be better than good enough, it's your attitude. If you're not willing to work your fingers to the bone to make it really happen in the biggest way possible, it won't. It just plain won't. You won't grow, you won't learn, and you won't get published.

I think this applies even to writing as a hobby. You

Charles Saunders has posted an older short story, "Luendi," in the Blog section of his web site. Bill Ward's review on the Black Gate Blog: 'Luendi' gives us not a fantasy Africa, but an Africa of the fantastic — one in which the mysteries beyond the light of the campfire are real, and the kind of just retribution found in folk stories is transposed to a time and place that sorely ne

Trip to Calvert

Yesterday the temperature dropped to nearly 97 degrees, so we decided to actually do something outside. With a couple of friends we drove up to Calvert, a little town to the north of here, with a Victorian main street and a lot of old houses. Calvert is very small, very poor, and a lot of it looks mostly the same as how it looked in the 1901. We ate lunch at Cocoa Moda, had wonderful chocolate, and then looked at little stores with stuff we couldn't afford.

We took a few pictures of some of th
