I’m Weightless

Today I’m feeling weightless.

My favorite short story I’ve ever written is a little story called “Weightless.” It was first published in a micro-press anthology entitled The Great Beyond, but more recently, it’s found a true home in Soul Jar, an anthology featuring stories by 31 disabled authors. I love this anthology for all sorts of reasons, but mostly because as a disabled author, we don’t see enough disabled characters using their disabilities as strengths and learning to love themselves fo...

All the Pretty Books

I have a thing for pretty books.

The above image is one of six bookshelves in my office. (One of these days I’ll give a proper walkthrough of my space.) I’ve enjoyed looking at books since my eyes could see. I was reading and writing at 2 ½ -3 years old so books have been a part of my life forever.

While those two stories are in the collection (with fresh edits), there are other new stories in the c...

Happy Little Accidents

Last week, I was trying to take a selfie, and like many, the shutter did its thing yet none of the photos were what I wanted. It wasn’t until I was about to set my phone down that my thumb slipped and the following selfie was born.

Accidental selfie of Raven Oak featuring blue computer glasses, rainbow hair, gray shirt, and a wide-eyed stare.

Funny thing is, this happy accident looks better than most of my intentional photos—pics where I blinked or I have something in my teeth. Sometimes, happy accidents can lead to unexpected greatness, which is how I feel about a project coming up.

See, I never set out ...
