The Death of an Atheist

An atheist friend of mine was tragically killed just before Christmas, while riding his bike. I had befriended him after an interview, and talked to him a number of times since then about his salvation.

Take a moment to listen to what he said in the original interview about how long he thought he still had to live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F30lT5cflTwFor Evangelism Resources, please visit LivingWaters.com.

Something for Sunday, for Atheists

"And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever comes to me, and hears my sayings, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that hears, and does not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great" (Luke 6:46-49).

The unwise teenager knew what he wanted and he got it, only to find that his girl became pregnant. He also contracted a serious sexually transmitted disease he will have for a lifetime. The thoughtless youth thought he knew best when it came to drinking and driving, and he crashed, and killed his best friend. The gambler thought he could beat the casino odds, and instead lost the shirt off his back. The husband destroyed the trust of his wife because he thought he knew best when he was unfaithful.

Of course, many get away with adultery, don't get a sexually transmitted disease, come away with winnings, and get away with drinking and driving.

But no matter the success or failure in this life, anyone who ignores the sayings of Jesus, refusing to do what He says, is like a man who built his house without a foundation. Think of such a house. It may have large and clear windows to let in natural light, solid walls to keep out predators, and a large roof to keep out the elements, but if it has no foundation, when the big storm hits, it's going to crumble.

Maybe you have constructed your "house" well. You have plenty of light--you don't gamble, commit adultery or drink and drive. You know where you are going and what you know best...and you think it's best to stay away from Christianity.

You may be able to protect yourself from the daily storms, but there is one storm that you will not survive. That's the storm of the justice of God that will come on Judgment Day. You will crumble and fall, because you refused to do what Jesus told you to do. Don't be that person. Today, repent and trust the Savior, and lay the foundation that will last for eternity. For Evangelism Resources, please visit LivingWaters.com.

The end of atheism...

A number of atheists have recently told me that Christianity was shrinking and that it will vanish, and that atheism is on the rise. If that's what you think, think again. As theist Mark Twain may have said, "It ain't."

It is on the rise, big time. Millions of atheists are converting to Christianity in China. Millions. They are coming to know the Lord. How absolutely wonderful.

Meanwhile, the intelligent ones over here think that nothing created everything, that they are apes, cousins of bananas, and they don't want everlasting life. God bless the Chinese.

Stay within the law...

On January 19th the Associated Press reported that an abortion doctor in Philadelphia was charged with "eight counts of murder in the deaths of a patient and seven babies who were born alive and then killed with scissors, prosecutors said Wednesday."

The 69 year-old doctor, Kermit Gosnell, "made millions of dollars over 30 years, performing as many illegal, late-term abortions as he could, prosecutors said." The AP said that he "induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord."

His real crime was that he didn't murder them legally. He was supposed to cut the babies in pieces with his scalpel, rather than use scissors.

Let this be a sobering lesson to all the many money-making abortionists, to make sure they murder within the confines of American law.

Mark Twain was no Dummy...

"As Mark Twain said, 'I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.' Also, what a miserable existence you must have to see death as the biggest event in your life, when it should do nothing more than mark the end of a sequence of much bigger events. Go live." TSL

Bravely spoken. Mark Twain was a very intelligent and witty man. In a 1868 speech, he said, "God puts something good and loveable in every man His hands create." But he also said, "Faith is believing what you know ain't so," and "If Christ were here now there is one thing he would not be – a Christian."

Despite his criticism for organized religion, he had a profound respect for Jesus, once telling his brother, "Neither Howells nor I believe in hell or the divinity of the Savior, but no matter, the Savior is none the less a sacred Personage, and a man should have no desire or disposition to refer to him lightly, profanely, or otherwise than with the profoundest reverence."

He said of Him, "There has been only one Christian. They caught and crucified him--early."

Men often speak bravely when things are going well. Towards the end of the 19th century Mark Twain's good fortune began to change. In the 1890s, he made some risky investments that brought him to bankruptcy. Then his oldest daughter died of meningitis, his youngest was diagnosed an epileptic, and his own health began to fail. His closest friend died, and his beloved wife lost her health and eventually died, of whom he had once said, "You are my world, my life, my pride, my all of earth that is worth the having."

The storms of life predictably left him bitter at God, saying that He was "destitute of morals," and that "He could invent the tortures and set in motion the laws and machinery which should continue them through all time without his supervision, then turn His attention elsewhere and trouble himself no further about the matter."

In time, his bitterness even changed his mind about Jesus, crediting Him with what Twain believed was the invention of Hell. He wrote "the meek and gentle savior was a thousand times crueler than ever he was in the Old Testament."

So keep in mind that when you quote the great Mark Twain, you are quoting a man who wasn't a dummy. He believed in the existence of God, but tragically it seems that he didn't have the good sense to obey Him. Hopefully, you do.

P.s.
For those who still insist that Mark Twain was a fool:

"No man that has ever lived has done a thing to please God--primarily. It was done to please himself, then God next." Mark Twain, a Biography

"Man proposes, but God blocks the game." Letter to Jean Clemens, 19 June, 1908

"God pours out love upon all with a lavish hand -- but He reserves vengeance for His very own." Mark Twain's Notebook

Take Some Comfort...

I wrote a book once, called, 101 of the Dumbest Things People Have Done. It's a funny book. Adults do the dumbest things. The book's almost an autobiography, because most of it is about dumb things I have done. But I do take comfort in the fact that I'm not the only one in this world who messes up.

One of my friends is a school teacher. Just this morning he told me that he drove his wife's van to work. As he pulled into the school parking lot he noticed that his lips were dry, so he found his wife's Chap stick and gave a liberal application to his dried lips. He also applied it a little above and below his lips. He taught the first five minutes of class with red Avon lip balm lipstick all over his face. His students finally said something.

I could easily write book two. I have the material. Ask any of my friends about an average day. I walk into walls, hurt myself, hurt other people, drop things and knock things over. Just my presence can cause things to go wrong.

I have the combined virtues of being a klutz and of doing dumb things. For example, I stood up from a couch recently while holding a plate in one hand and a sandwich in the other. Suddenly I hit the floor like a ton of bricks. Both of my feet had become caught in a comforter that was on the floor. Sue couldn't believe how fast I went down and how fast our dog downed my food.

A few days earlier we had taken our thieving canine to get trimmed. This was to be a complimentary trim because the last time we took him in he came back looking like he had a fight with a lawn mower. The groomer had cut back his ears so much he looked more like a matador than a Bichon. It was so bad I wrote a polite letter of complaint to the lawnmower lady, and she called and sincerely apologized. When she asked when Sam would need another clip, I was tempted to say that it would be 15 years, because the last cut was so close.

I wasn't excited about his next trim, but the time came when the dog's eyes disappeared into his white fur. I suspected that if we didn't get him trimmed, we would soon have to send in a search-party to find him.

We made an appointment, and Sue decided that I should go in and personally make sure it was a free trim and that the fur-hater had been warned to cut back her enthusiasm. She wanted me to take the initiative because, as a man, I know how to do things right.

As she sat in the car and watched me take the lead and take the dog into the groomers, she noticed that I had walked into the wrong place. I had mistakenly gone into a pediatric clinic. This was no surprise to her. I was inside a little mystified as to why the groomers had changed their procedure and were having me sign in my name and the time I arrived.

It was when I was filling out the form that I heard her calling from the door "Wrong place!" The dog groomers was next door. I'm sure she would have said something more if I had come out of the place without the dog.

A little while after that, my Personal Assistant was able to secure an interview with a professor of evolutionary biology at Los Angeles' most prestigious university. He's a good researcher and is great with words. He was born in Mexico, raised in Canada, married a Russian, and lives in France.

I wanted to ask an "expert" on evolution about some of the serious difficulties I have with the theory. This was for an episode of Season Five of our television program called "Darwin, God, and the Bible."

The professor was very nice and the interview went well, so I decided to send him a fruit basket and a thank you card. I went on line, filled out all the details, and received confirmation that the order went through. There was only one problem. I couldn't remember typing in the professor's address. I had accidentally sent the fruit basket to myself. This was no surprise. I ordered a second basket and had this one sent to the professor.

Next week I will get a huge basket of dried fruits, some nuts, and a big thank you card for a great interview. I'm sure I will be encouraged. For Evangelism Resources, please visit LivingWaters.com.

A Little Sunday Something for Atheists

"For a good tree brings not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks" (Luke 6:43-45)

The Bible often compares people to sheep, goats, foxes, snakes and other animals. This is because the animals symbolize the character of certain people. Jesus called Herod a "fox," and John called the religious leaders "snakes." Herod was cunning, and the religious leaders were low down nasty creatures, with a vicious bite to them. Christians are called "sheep" because they follow the Good Shepherd to everlasting life. Non Christians are called "goats," because their father is the devil, his will they willingly do, and he leads them into death and Hell.

In this passage of Scripture, each of us are likened to trees, and the "fruit" is evidence of our character. How do you know if a man or woman has a godly character? Look for the evidence of "fruit." The Bible speaks of "the fruit of righteousness." The godly will always strive to do that which is right. There is "the fruit of repentance." If they sin, they will be quick to repent. They are free from hypocrisy. Scripture speaks of "the fruits of praise" and of "thanksgiving." A godly person will give God praise and heart-felt thanksgiving for the gift of life and for the abundance of goodness that He has lavished upon us, despite our many sins.

Finally, there is "the fruit of the Spirit." If the Spirit of God dwells in someone, they will have the evidence of love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, faith, meekness, and temperance.

Then Jesus explained that you can know the character of someone by what comes out of his or her mouth. This is so true. Go to any secular forum--where people can speak their heart, and you will feel like you have been swimming in a sewer. Of course, those who are already in the sewer will disagree. For Evangelism Resources, please visit LivingWaters.com.
