Can I just Say THANK YOU?
you don’t really need an excuse for a party?
There are over 800 of you following this blog by email and more than 600 as WP subscribers, plus a bunch more that just pop in from time to time…
A year ago there were like ten of you.
Okay, maybe it was a hundred. Still.
I want to say thank you. It’s truly humbling to see so many people tuning in to see what I have to say. I’ll always try to make it worth your time.
(BTW, am I supposed to host a party when we hit 1000? Let me know.)
Thanks.
Dan

Perfect chocolate chip cookies, 3p
a tasty bargain, and being so inexpensive, you can make them as often as you like…
COOKING ON A BOOTSTRAP by JACK MONROE
Last night I found myself with an urge for chocolate chip cookies. I was a bit miserable, the gas meter was running out (and even more so by the time I type this…), my tiny flat was cold and I was generally feeling a little bit grouchy and blue. Usual distractions don’t apply – I don’t own a television and nor do I have broadband to distract myself from the occasional bout of gloom (I run this blog from the internet on my mobile phone!) These are choices I have made for myself, because I am still fearful of long term financial contracts, especially as a freelance writer, especially in insecure rented accommodation in the first few months of my contract. So when it comes to mood-boosters, my options are somewhat limited.
So, cookies. I put a rallying cry on Twitter, as the wonderful people who follow me are often…

Charming
Flash Fiction: The Eye Of The Fairy
Last night, I started writing my story for this week’s flash fiction challenge. It was dark in spite of its description as a “Christmas” story. It was unexpected. It had unconventional characters and a nice twist. I nearly finished it.
Today, I threw it away.
Because today, I learned my dear friend is in her final days of life. And everything about my story seemed off after that. So I started over.
The challenge itself is straightforward: use a random title generator and pick one to be the title. This has the same title as the story I tossed, but it is a very different tale.
The Eye of the Fairy
The wind blows snow in my face as I near the building. I turn away but continue my forward progress, letting the storm hit the side of my parka’s hood. My hands chap as I clutch the box against my body, and I…

If A Book Purchase Was Written in the Style of Romantic Fiction #writer #comedy #bookaddict
I can seeyou in the bookshop. You look so good on that shelf. I am drawn to you. It’s like there is a magnetic force at play.
My heart rate has quickened and I am now pushing shoppers aside to get to you.
I am standing in front of your shelf. Excuse my breathlessness and flushed cheeks, I get like this sometimes when buying highly recommended new books.
Everyone online is talking about you. They are raving about how good you make them feel. Some say you gave them a sleepless night and some say they are struggling to return to their day to day lives.
They say I should order you online but I don’t want to. I need you in paperback so I can hold you close to my chest.
I want you.
My nostrils have gone wild. You smell absolutely divine.
Up close the artwork on your…

Terminal Outbreath
Terminal Outbreath
——-
You know my sighs, and yet,
I am a stranger to your knowing;
Though not your eyes, which,
Drinking in my flowing,
See me.
——-
As vision sees the fleeting blink,
As petals bid farewell
To the last drop of dawn’s clear ink;
As the young bird triumphs, briefly,
in the uplift of a feathered wing
——-
And even here,
In the stale air of boarded flyers gone,
Of distant vapour’s smell which thrust them on,
Of tiny crumbs where junior sat with mom
——-
My sigh that knows no ears remains to kiss the emptied one

WHEN WENDY WANDERS IN
As I’ve previously mentioned, one of the reasons I write is to help me understand things right in front of me. Life, as I’ve encountered it. Even for a slow learner like me.
The next step, revision, difficult as it often is, cuts through the surfaces to discover what’s behind the original draft. It’s like plowing a field and planting, without knowing quite what you’ll harvest. It takes me and the reader over the horizon and into new territory. And it’s best done multiple times, like year after year of farming.
That’s certainly what happened with Promise and its subsequent books in my Northwest Passion series. Sometimes it’s even quite exciting.
Consider the flash where I decided to reverse the dynamic between Jaya and Erik, making her the older partner in the emerging romance. She’s the career-oriented professional – and the accomplished yogi. He’s the charmer full of potential. It…
