WWDJD? (What Would Donald Judd Drive?)

This NYT piece about Judd's truck was posted last year on AL.   Chip Lord has been wondering what sorta truck The Donald would drive these days? What do you think?
Hate to say it, but I think the man would be driving a 4x4 Toyota Tundra V8. They are good trucks. Not a lot of soul, but they're not going to let you down, out in the desert.

ALEX EMOND & PLEINE AIRE IN THE CANADIAN ROCKIES

Alex Emond, the painter-- and our correspondent from the Alberta Rockies & the high plains of Saskatchewan-- was featured in an article in the Globe & Mail, Canada's national newspaper, last weekend. A few of my favorite AE finds, below--especially the International grainer, veteran of 60 Saskatchewan wheat harvests.

1942 Hudson Pickup

Beach day at Goose Rocks. Ice cream on Dock Square. We were driving home when we spotted this at Arundel Place, on the Log Cabin Road in Kennebunkport, Maine. Don't know if the Hudson's for sale, but a bunch of old trucks are. t 207 604 2136.

Chip Lord's NEW CARS 2012 project. And Lee Friedlander

New Cars, 2012
New Cars, 2012 was inspired by Lee Friedlander’s project titled The New Cars, 1964. I heard about it but only knew the title and thought it was a good idea to revisit in 2012, a time in which the values driving car design have changed against the backdrop of climate change.  I began shooting pictures with only the title in mind but when I researched Friedlander’s book, (I bought it on Amazon) I realized that he had been commissioned to photograph the new car models for a magazine – Harpers Bazaar - that ultimately rejected his pictures.
I kept shooting, having given myself a different set of criteria. In California, where I live, it is easy to recognize a new car because the state sends the license plate to the new owner about six weeks after purchase. New cars have “paper plates”.  Ultimately the pictures collected here are a random selection of 2012 models, all shot during the year 2012. In the documentary tradition, I shot as I travelled, realizing that the backgrounds have meaning equal to the subjects.  Some of these pictures were taken with my iPhone and others with a Samsung TL 500, which looks a lot like the Leica that Friedlander most likely used in 1964.  I looked for models and context that would represent the transition moment we are living in – a time when design and style still hold sway over new car buyers, but efficiency and performance mean miles per gallon instead of horsepower for many new buyers.
So in the year in which CO2 in the atmosphere reached 392.92 parts per million, the highest amount on record, I present these images of a changing automotive object and its surrounding culture.

Model T Depot Hack

We've been doing a lot of woodies lately (hit that link for one example; or just google "autoliterate" and "woodie"--or maybe "woody"). The 1930 Ford was one of my favorites,  but I guess this machine is really the place to start. The ur-Woodie station wagon. I'm guessing @ 1916. If anyone has a better idea let me know. At York Harbor, Maine.

GMC and The Comstock

from Michael S Moore, out in Nevada:
"Lee Saloutos has been poking around down in the Comstock and sent me these two pictures of a suspiciously cherry GMC tanker from his iphone today"

Donald Judd in SoHo & Marfa & the Pinto Canyon Road

NYT piece today on DJ's digs in SoHo. And below, one of our favorite spaces at Chinati, the Judd (museum?  institution? cavalry post? antelope refuge?) in Marfa. And here's a link to an Autoliterate link to a NYT piece on Judd's Dodge Power Wagon. And below, below, because my whole family is missing West Texas badly, a photo taken on that old beloved Pinto Canyon Road. And hell, since we're already on the Pinto Canyon Road, may as well get a truck shot in.
