Set the Night on Fire: LA in the Sixties

Set the Night on Fire: LA in the Sixties is a new book by Mike Davis and Jon Wiener, who know an apocalypse when they see one, whether it's suburban kids rioting on the Sunset Strip or Watts burning.

1973 Toyota HiLux

From Michael Moore in : "An immaculate 1973 Toyota HiLux in the valley this morning…"

AL has posted HiLux trucks in New Mexico, in LA--and another flatbed in New Mexico. Michael Moore caught this put-together Toyota in Pueblo, CO. Here's a 2003 Toyota going from LA to NYC via NOLA

1964 Rambler Classic; 1966 Rambler Classic.

These babies were wintering on Deer Isle, Maine. I'm kinda guessing the years.

"Island cars" kept on Isle au Haut mostly aren't licensed by the State of Maine, but the town clerk collects a tax.

1963 Cadillac Convertible

Best guess is 1963. Fin were downsizing, gradually. Caught the car on a sorta-Spring afternoon up near Fresh Pond in Cambridge MA. Here's a  1964 Cadillac,  same color, also Cambridge. Best guess. Wouldn't bet the farm on "1964".

AL profiled that 1958 Buick Roadmaster a while back. Also the 1963 Lincoln Continental

AMC Pacer. Montclair, N.J.

from Jonathan Welsh: "Conversations turn to "Wayne's World" and general ridicule when the AMC Pacer comes up. But the big-windowed design seemed futuristic and was a big seller when it arrived for the 1975 model year. Timing was almost perfect as the energy crisis pushed people toward smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. Sales sliokpped by 1977 as Toyota, Datsun and other imports with better mileage and quality took over. I don't think those rivals ever matched the Pacer's unique interiors, though. Production ended with the 1980 model.'

Saab Story

1986 Saab 900, from Jonathan Welsh: "My wife, Alexa, caught this classic in Montclair, N.J. last September. It brings about memories of when Saabs competed with BMWs and Volvos for space in garages of the well-to-do, especially in the Northeast. Unique shape. This looks like an '86 because it has directional lights on the sides of the front fenders near the doors (new that year) but not the smoother, more integrated bumper of '87. I was lucky to have a friend in college with one like this, also in my favorite "tomat red." Many fond road-trip recollections."
