Excerpt )

Meet the author: A veteran writer of fan fiction with thousands of followers, Melissa Graves wrote her first story at age thirteen, and by age sixteen had met her future husband in an online vampire fiction chat room. A fan of science fiction and fantasy, she has a degree in anthropology and a passion for good chocolate, amateur erotica and fan worlds that celebrate diversity. She is mother to two cats.

Bleeding Heart, book one of the Mi Corazón Sangrante series, was her debut novel for Interlude Press.

1) What genre is your book and what drew you to this genre?
Tainted Heart is a combination of urban paranormal, political thriller, and erotic romance—I’d like to think a bit of the best of all three! Erotic romance is my primary love, but it’s always been the most fun for me when I can play with the setting and theme, taking the story to a place outside of the usual mainstream modern context. Vampire fiction is a favorite of mine. I love how the story of the minority plays out in many vampire universes, so I tied that to contemporary themes of social queerness and ran with it.

2) How many days a week do you write?
Zero to seven, depending on my mood! No, really—I try not to plan writing sessions. For me that would be like planning every sexual encounter I had; the mood would die fast. If I’m on a deadline and have an outline, I do try to structure myself and make time to write scene by scene so that I don’t fall hopelessly behind, but I am not a writer who believes you need to write every day to succeed. If you want to, you should. If you don’t, you shouldn’t. For me, writing is all about what I have to say and feeling inspired to say it.

3) On average, how long does it take to write a book?
Six months if I’m in control of the word monster—a year if I’m not, or if I’m crafting something more carefully than usual. Again, I hate to put a timetable on writing, but deadlines are deadlines no matter what you do in life. Once I get going, I can maintain a pretty intense pace, but it’s the getting going that’s the challenge.

4) Do you have a trailer for your book? If yes, give us the link. If not, do you think you’d like to have one done at some point?
Oh, I wish! Anyone out there interested in making one? And can it be smutty?

Let’s be real—I want a trailer and a movie! But yes, absolutely. I come from fanfiction roots, and it’s always nice to have things made for the works you create—fanart, fan videos, “fake” movie posters, and so on. To have something like that for my original work would be amazing.

5) If I could be a character in a book, I would be _______?
I’d be the socially awkward yet worthy sidekick, if I’m being honest. I love quirky helper characters, and I love being an observer, or the person the “main” characters confide in. There’s something to be said for observing the action and collecting a record of events—this is probably why I ended up becoming an author, now that I think about it!

Special Awards of the Rainbow Awards

You often read good news on this wall, I love stories giving hope, maybe since I had too bad stories in my life. But interacting with many people, managing the Rainbow Awards, put me in contact with others, and that means interacting with different lives, and life is not always with an happy ending. Since 2011 I started to devote some Rainbow Awards to people who touched me, with the little hope we will not forget them, but years after years, I fear those names are going into oblivion, so forgive the sad wall, but I want once again remember them:

Bobby Michaels (1951 - October 30, 2011): the Gay Erotic Romance category is named after him; Bobby was an early Gay Erotic Romance author, I really loved his books, read them always on the day they were out. Bobby was fighting with AIDS, and he spent the last two years of his life in and out hospitals. It was at that time I launched the Rainbow Awards (2009) and he gladly accepted to be in the jury. At the time we were just a bunch of friends who thought we could do something good, and Bobby loved the experience. He was able to do only the first year, his rate was fundamental for the winner of that year, Kyell Gold with Out of Position. Bobby never submitted to the Rainbow Awards, never had the chance, but I'm sure he would have been a winner in his category.

William Neale (1957 - March 13, 2012): the Gay Contemporary Romance is named after Bill. He was a rising star of this genre, very involved in the community, among the first organizers of the GayRomLit convention (GRL). I was lucky enough to be picked to a lunch with author at New Orleans convention with Bill and Rick R. Reed joined us. Wonderful memory. I was particulary broken by the news of Bill passing away from an heart attack since, during that lunch, he told me that if I was ever in Cleveland we should have met, and indeed I wrote him I was going in March... and my email was sent on the same day he passed away.

Dirk Vanden (May 7, 1933 - October 20, 2014): the LGBT Biography/Memoir category is devoted to Dirk who won it with his memoir. Dirk was an early gay novelist, not a prolific one, but a beloved gay authors on the West Coast US in the 70s... not that there were many at the time. Dirk lost his partner due to AIDS, and many other friends too. He had financial trouble in the end, forced to sell all his memorabilia and paintings (he was an awesome artists too) just to make the day, let along the month. His only desire was to be able to feed his dog, and when he lost one, to be able to pay the shelter to take another one.

Cate Culpepper (June 29, 1957 - October 25, 2014): the Lesbian Paranormal Romance category is named after Cate. I have never met her, but she was always a favority of the Rainbow Awards. Actually when she passed away, her last novel was on the good track to be the winner of its category, how it happened. Cate was struggling with diabetes if I remember well, and all she wanted was to survive long enough to not leave her beloved old pet alone... as soon as he passed away, she did too. I'm sure they are taking long walk in heaven right now.

Dorien Grey (November 14, 1932 - November 1, 2015): the Gay Mystery/Thriller category is devoted to Dorien. When I started working with the LGBT community there weren't many venues you could trust, and the Yahoo Group of Roger/Dorien was one. Dorien was always a gentleman, always trying to be the peacemaker, maybe since he really saw what war was. Thinking at Dorien, make you think to better times, when being respectful wasn't an exception but what they told you since kindergarten. I still remember reading on his memoirs how he went through the things of a friend who passed away, and how sad it was to think everything was to an end... I hope Dorien Grey's life will be forever a treasure for the LGBT community.

Sandra Moran (December 20, 1968 - November 7, 2015): the Lesbian Historical category will be devoted to Sandra. She was quite a new friend in my circle, just shy of two years I think, but we often exchanged emails. She was interested in my book, Days of Love, especially the historical Lesbian lives I had in it. She told me we should talk about a project, but we never did... and now we will never do. When I was having some issue in my life, she took the time to privately messaging me, and at the time I was basically a stranger, to give me courage and hope. I was deeply touched, and from that moment on, I always associated positive feelings to Sandra's name. Yes, we have never met, but again, I will miss you.

Few know about his little secret, but his ranch hands have run out on him and the folks in town aren’t as hospitable as they were before the incident. He’s resigned himself to the fact that working his ranch will have to be enough or he will need to sell and move to the big city…that is until he meets Trent Anderson.
On the outside Trent appears to be a man with full access to silver spoons and caviar dreams, but his parents cut him off and tossed him out once they discovered he was gay. After living on the street, selling himself, then ending up in a destructive relationship, Trent pulled his life together and came out on top, all by using his compassion and intelligence—or so Trent thinks. Recently, Trent’s grandfather passed away and left him his ranch, as long as he meets a few conditions, like living in Texas for ninety days. But Trent’s secret benefactor, Reed, is dissatisfied that Trent isn’t living in Atlanta and wants him back. The only issue for Reed is that Trent is involved with Rusty.
Money, greed, lust, and power work to keep Rusty and Trent apart. They are forced to trust each other when life falls apart, but can they actually become close enough in ninety days to create a solid, trusting relationship, or will old relationships come between them?

Along with her writing addiction she has a coffee addiction. Some nights, the only reason she stops writing and goes to sleep is for the fresh brewed coffee in the morning.
Sara enjoys writing twisted tales of passion, anger, and love with a good healthy dose of lust thrown in for fun. Almost a quarter of a century ago Sara met her lover, falling for him after knowing him for ten minutes. Sara's passion for him comes out in her stories, mixing with her passion for life, love, and good times, flowing onto the page and becoming tales from the heart.

Roman ‘Quick’ Webb is Duke’s business partner and best friend. Both men are in their forties and have given up on the happily ever after with the ranch-style home, and white picket fence. They’d both tried it and failed miserably. But they have their friendship and they have the business.

When Quick’s son, Vaughan Webb returns – after seven years - from studying abroad with his law degree in hand, he’s back to claim what he’s always wanted…his fathers’ best friend… Duke Morgan. Vaughan has always claimed to be a classic gentleman with an old soul. He didn’t party and screw up in school like his buddies. He was focused and dedicated to becoming the man worthy of Duke’s love.

It’s a complex and messy situation as Duke and Quick figure out how to still be best friends when one of them is sleeping with his friend’s one and only son. But when Duke is hurt on the job, all the unimportant trivialities fall to the wayside and Vaughan and Quick put their heads together to save Duke.

Part I of the Promises story is about Duke and Vaughan. Part II will be about Quick and his realization that it’s not too late for any of them to find love.

Excerpt )

Meet the author: Hannah Walker is a full-time mum to two gorgeous teenage sons, and shares her home with them and a very supportive husband, who has always encouraged her to follow her dreams.
She has always loved books from her childhood years reading alongside her father. She has inherited her father’s love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. She has combined this with her love of MM romance to write her series Avanti Chronicles. She loves writing about a complex world where the men love and live hard.
Welcome to the world of MM Sci-fi.

1) How do you develop your plots and characters?
I have to admit to most of it being the characters talking to me. They tell me who they are and what they think happens in their story. So it’s more like I have a mental conversation with them. So I think things through and see what I come up with plot wise. I try to put myself in their position and see what I could see actually happening.
For the characters I start with the basics, who they present to the world, then I look below that and see what they show those around them. I take back each layer to see to the root of who they are. I then like to weave these layers through the story. So you may have a warrior, who is totally badass, but he may be someone who say loves to dance and goes out with his friends to have a good time. Then he may be someone who yearns for a family, but keeps it quiet as he can’t have that and do the job he does at the same time. He might be someone who is really stern and brusque on the outside but wants nothing more than to let go enough to laugh. Most of all I try to paint the characters as human no matter who they are.

2) Who doesn’t love a good hero? Tell us about your protagonist. Was there a real life inspiration behind them?
Corin has real life inspiration.
Corin is a remarkably gifted surgeon. My son is actually disabled, although thankfully not too severely. He has undergone more surgeries in his childhood years than anyone ever should. However we’ve been very lucky. His surgeon is an incredible woman.
She is well respected in her field and often goes to other countries to lecture and give seminars about her work. We’ve even gone with her once or twice, to the seminars in the UK, so that my son’s case could be used as an example.
She has never been one to shy away from trying new treatments and is constantly evolving and researching new treatments for Cerebal Palsy. Because of what Cerebal Palsy is, it covers more than just the bones of the body. It’s bones, muscles, nerves and so much more. So despite the fact that she is an orthopedic surgeon, she has undergone a lot of training in other areas. When it came time to write Corin’s backstory I used her as inspiration.
She is one of the loveliest people I have ever met. It’s often said that the truly gifted surgeons have no bedside manner. Not true in her case, she is genuinely one of the nicest people I know. She cares for each and every patient of hers. Even now, when he has officially moved over to adult services, she still phones up to check on him. She still asks the surgeons he’s under now, how he’s doing.
So yes, Corin is modelled on her.

3) What real-life inspirations do you use when world building?
I have a passion for science. I have a degree in chemistry, but also took major courses in physics and earth/planetary sciences. I like to draw on the science for some of the technology that I use in my books. The landscapes I try to stay within the normal ranges of what is out there now in our universe.
I keep an eye on the science journals and think about what new discoveries could be used as a basis for something in fiction.

4) Did you learn anything from this book and what was it?
I learnt to both listen to my characters and my gut. To listen when they say they want the story to go a certain way. The characters themselves can be really quite stubborn and will simply shut up if they think I’m not listening to what they want. On those days it becomes impossible to write so I normally end up giving them what they want just so that I can write again.

5) It’s your last meal on earth. What do you choose?
There’s a restaurant near where I live that is incredible. It dates back to the 1920’s and still has a lot of the original design. It’s a seafood restaurant. They do the most amazing seafood platters. I would probably have that and some champagne to toast the moment.

Meet the author: M.A. Church is a true Southern belle who spent many years in the elementary education sector. Now she spends her days lost in fantasy worlds, arguing with hardheaded aliens on far-off planets, herding her numerous shifters, or trying to tempt her country boys away from their fishing poles. It’s a full time job, but hey, someone’s gotta do it!

When not writing, she’s exploring the latest M/M novel to hit the market, watching her beloved Steelers, or sitting glued to HGTV. That’s if she’s not on the back porch tending to the demanding wildlife around the pond in the backyard. The ducks are very outspoken. She’s married to her high school sweetheart, and they have two children.

She was a finalist in the Rainbow awards for 2013 and is a member of Romance Writers of America, Rainbow Romance Writers, and Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.

1) How do you feel about e-books vs print books?
Boy, that’s fast becoming an age-old question, lol. I have been reading and buying books since I was old enough to understand the written word. I have donated laundry baskets full of paperbacks and hardbacks to my library over the years.
I still even have some paperbacks from my favorite mainstream authors and several M/M authors. I have copies of my paperback books. Nothing tops the feeling of seeing your work in book form and being able to hold it. Except maybe signing it!
The thing is, I bought a Surface here recently, solely for the purpose of reading epub. I thought about getting a Kindle, but I’ve got hundreds of ebooks. Can you imagine how much space I would need if all of those were actual books? And that right there is the reason I’ve decided to go with e-books.

2) What process did you go through to get your first book published?
The first book I had published was probably different than how most folks go about it. I was writing on a free site, and on the advice of a friend I met there, I started putting my work at another free site. A publisher saw me, and contacted me wanting the story I was working on. I did some checking around and subbed with that publisher.

3) How do you find or make time to write?
I no longer work, so making time to write really isn’t an issue as far as having a job outside of the home. Writing is my job now, so I don’t ‘make’ time for it. The problem, of course, is that I’m at home. So I tend to get distracted by household chores, like vacuuming or watering the plants.

4) Name one person who you feel supported you outside of your family members?
I would have to say Tali Spencer. I met her while writing at that free website under the name of nomoretears00. It’s kind of a funny story. I had sent her a PM encouraging her not to let a nasty comment get to her. LOL.
Little did I know just how much experience she had as an author. We became friends, and then I found out she’d read some of my stories and liked them. I had questions and she had answers, lol. Boy, did I have questions.
So she was the one who supported a struggling newbie in the beginning of her fledgling writing career, lol. We’ve since become very good friends.

5) Tell us about a book you’re reading now.
I have an ARC of Chris T. Kat’s Battle Stations I can’t wait to read.

He intends to fill his days working, playing his saxophone whom he calls his baby, sipping green iced tea and hanging out with friends. He’s far less optimistic about a summer romance. But then he meets the very handsome Tyler Lawrence. A fellow musician and recent high school grad himself, Tyler also enjoys losing himself in his music and conspicuously avoids speaking about his own ex at all costs. When FBI agent Jerry Lee Parker wakes from a coma after a murderous attack on his life, he has no memory of his immediate past. In the blink of an eye, he has gone from having a nearly photographic memory to recalling nothing of the last six months of his life, including his partner and lover, John Flynn. While Lee tries to reboot his past and reconnect with John, there are events at play around him he doesn’t understand. John is keeping secrets from him, secrets which could get them both killed.
Matters come to a head when Lee is hounded to turn over a mysterious artifact, of which he has no knowledge. The two men wind up in a fight for their lives as they risk everything to keep the powerful relic out of the hands of a ruthless killer. In order to protect those he loves, however, John may be forced to make a deal with the devil.

Meet the author: Sarah Madison is a veterinarian with a big dog, an even bigger horse, too many cats, and a very patient boyfriend. She is a terrible cook, and concedes that her life would be easier if Purina made People Chow. She writes because it is cheaper than therapy.

"I’m a veterinarian, so I tend to put animals in my stories. I lead a very prosaic and boring life, so I make up for that with a wild imagination. I like to explore “what if?” questions in my stories, which lean toward the unusual and alien. You’ll seldom get a simple contemporary romance from me. I love reading stories where two people simply fall in love, but when it comes to writing stories, I always have to throw a curve ball.

Truth and Consequences is book 3 in the Sixth Sense series. It features FBI Agents Jerry Lee Parker and John Flynn, and the events that occur when Flynn accidentally touches a mysterious artifact and gains unusual powers. As the Sixth Sense series unfolds, we learn there is a set of such boxes, and that Lee and John aren’t the only ones looking for them. They’re in over their head, and the water is just getting deeper…"

1) How do you feel about e-books vs print books?
I am very much aware that the advent of e-books made it possible for publishers to take a chance on an unknown author such as me. If it weren’t for the explosion of e-publishers in the wake of the development of e-readers, I’d probably still be waiting for my first contract.
E-publishing took the reins out of the hand of the Big Six (or Five, depending on who you cite) and put it in the hands of the reader. No longer did you have the Big Five serving as a gatekeeper to the reading public, deciding that all heroines had to fit a specific mold (preferably Barbie-like) and all heroes had to appeal to a certain demographic. For the first time, diversity became possible, and to the surprise of many, readers lapped it up.
That said, until I bought a Kindle Paperwhite, I read very few e-books. I like the feel of a print book in my hands. I own over a thousand hard copies. Someone can walk into my house and know that I’m a reader and what kinds of books I like to read. Prior to the Paperwhite, I found e-readers too heavy and clunky to carry around, and reading on my phone drained the battery. Not to mention the very real problem that reading on an e-reader frequently would keep me awake long past the time when I should have been sleeping.
The Paperwhite changed all that. I can read it outside. I can read in bed and it won’t keep me up until 3 am unless the book is that gripping. It’s lightweight, and the battery lasts longer than my old Nook. It’s perfect for travel. I can download new stories with a single click. Given the prices of paperbacks have become ridiculously high, most of my new purchases are in e-book form now.
But if I love an author’s work, I buy the story in print. I want that print copy. I crave that print copy.

2) What process did you go through to get your first book published?
Oh dear. Well, I’d written a story—in fact, it was the first one in this series—Unspeakable Words—and on a whim, I submitted it to Dreamspinner. Never in a million years did I expect to get a contract! In fact, my initial reaction was to take it back and say it wasn’t ready yet. It wound up on Dreamspinner’s Best Seller list for over a month. I was stunned at its reception. Virtually everything I’ve ever submitted has been accepted for publication, with the exception of one or two short stories I’d submitted for anthologies. I’ll be the first to admit, short stories aren’t my forte. In fact, most of my novels began as short story prompts and grew all out of proportion!

3) How do you find or make time to write?
That is the toughest part of this whole gig. I work in an emotionally and physically demanding profession with long hours and frequent interruptions. Many days I come home too mentally fried to contemplate writing. I try to carve out a little time each day though, but it’s one of the reasons I write more slowly than some.

4) Name one person who you feel supported you outside of your family members?
I am supremely fortunate that my boyfriend is incredibly supportive. He doesn’t just think I’m a good writer, he offers his services as proofreader, formatter, website designer and more. We met online as the result of my accidentally signing up for an internet dating service. Because of his background in IT, he googled the name I used on the dating site and discovered my online fanfiction archives. And he still wanted to go out with me! He confessed to having read some of my stories before we went out on our first date, and it soon became obvious he’d read more than one or two. We’ve been together almost a decade now, and I consider him the most important person in my life.

5) Tell us about a book you’re reading now.
I’m reading a murder mystery I picked up for free on Book Bub. I’m struggling with it because I intensely dislike the heroine. I’m guessing she’s supposed to be independent and assertive, but I think she’s just rude. Her behavior is inconsistent, too. I can’t decide if she really is an unlikeable personality or if perhaps we as readers have been taught to be hypercritical of female protagonists. Huh, I feel a blog post on the subject coming on…
