2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: The Dancer's Dilemma (Campus Connections #3)

The Dancer's Dilemma (Campus Connections #3) by CJane Elliott

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I was pulled in by the main character, Tyrone, who is well drawn and quite engaging as he goes about his life. The secondary characters are also fully realized, and the story flows well. This book is the third in a series, and these characters' lives were explored in previous books. However, the careful writing here makes it easy to fully enjoy this novel as a standalone.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: A Woman’s Persuasion

A Woman’s Persuasion by Jeanette Watts

The start was quite awkward – much telling, not much showing. More like a summary than a story. Once the story got moored off and on its way it was a delightful adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion to the 21st century with a queer twist. Frightening true in many details. Liberation is still only a word in many circles. The writing is very accomplished, but not always quite fitting to a setting in the 21st century – at more than one occasion I was reminded of the original Regency English. In itself great, in a 21st century setting not so much. The character development of Anne was very well done.

Fun and light-hearted. Orcs can be loveable! It makes me want to read the first three of the series.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Witch Under Wraps (Mythmatched)

Witch Under Wraps (Mythmatched) by E.J. Russell

I liked how the characters and plot wove together, and the clever way in which the plot twist is resolved. The world building is very detailed, and well thought out. I liked how their world is changing, and how allegiances have shifted even within the past year, which gave it the feel of a rich history, and tapestry of different races working together. Although this is part of a series, so I had the sense that other characters had their own stories, it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of this one, or leave me feeling as though I was on the back foot, having come in late. It stands on its own, yet left me wanting to explore the other stories in this world.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Drama Faerie (Nicky and Noah Mysteries #9)

Drama Faerie (Nicky and Noah Mysteries #9) by Joe Cosentino

Outrageous fun along with murder and mayhem abound during a very camp production of A Midsummer Night's dream where hunky actors die for real at sword's point. Nicky and Noah, once again, solve the mystery using a variety of puns, quips, tongue twisters and mixed metaphors along the way. Lots of fun for everyone - except the dead ones of course.
