2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Duke the Hall
Duke the Hall by E.J. Russell
Old world, queens, prices, castles, and old world, meet modern time, cell phones, sports cars, airplanes, and....Magic! This book has it all. It was quite entertaining if one doesn't mind the mish-mash. Most of the characters are quite likeable but one does need to read the first book to be able to enjoy this one to the fullest.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Where The Hell Is Tessa Ryker?
Where The Hell Is Tessa Ryker? (Rachel Cord Confidential Investigations) by R.E. Conary
Well written well paced, a somewhat cozy (except for the very start), but nonetheless gripping thriller-mystery. Although part of a series this book can be read as a stand-alone. The characters are well fleshed out and likable. The conflicts are well developed.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: The King’s Dragon (Fire and Valor #1)
The King’s Dragon (Fire and Valor #1) by W.M. Fawkes & Sam Burns
The King's Dragon snatched me up from the first page and didn't let go until it was done with me. The characters are complex and interesting, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and quirks. The fast-paced story-telling takes us through each point of view to build an intriguing story, set in a well-painted fantasy world with its own history. I can feel that there are many details building to the events of the next books. The romances are fun and visceral. Just an all around great read that I truly enjoyed, though I would recommend starting it only when you have a good day or so to let yourself get swept away.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Sort of Dead
Sort of Dead by Rob Rosen
What a fantastic, hilarious story this is! Being the first book I read from this author I was unaware of their writing, nor if I'd appreciate it. I'm so glad to have been given this book to judge. It had me laughing several times throughout. I'm so glad I live alone since I laughed so hard until the wee hours of the night. I stayed awake reading until 5am when I couldn't keep my eyes open. Any book that makes me laugh, especially as hard as I did this one, is a winner in my opinion. There were so many twists and turns, each more hilarious than the previous it kept me entertained throughout. I'm definitely looking forward to reading other books by Rob Rosen. I read from a reviewer on Goodreads that funny stories are his MO. Thanks for allowing me to read this wonderful story, Elisa!

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Blood Moon (A Wolves of Wolf's Point Novel)
Blood Moon (A Wolves of Wolf's Point Novel) by Catherine Lundoff
This was a definite step up from the first book, more detailed and with more depth. The plot was stronger and the characters just felt more real/genuine (and super likeable).

Dawn's Light (Duskblade #1) by Shannon Blair
I loved the quiet intensity between Moranthus and Gerrick, but also the back history, never intrusive and subtly developed.

The First Age (The Secret Histories #1) by Arshad Ahsanuddin
I loved the world building, and how all the character stories fit together, especially the connection between Mikal and Rian. The magic system is interesting and well thought out. This is the first of a series, and doesn’t stand alone or give a feeling of wrapping up this portion of the storyline.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: The Yakuza Path (Flowers of Flesh and Blood)
The Yakuza Path (Flowers of Flesh and Blood) by Amy Tasukada
This is a wonderfully dark crime story with a lot of twists and turns. Although there is a relationship at the centre of it, it’s not a romance. The characters are complex and flawed, and have to hide any weaknesses, which includes their feelings for each other. I became immersed in the authentic setting and culture as soon as I started reading. The author doesn’t shy away from describing the brutality of this world, the threats feel very real, as do the consequences of crossing their enemies. Nothing comes without cost.
