In LAND OF HEROES, Alexander becomes a truly heroic figure and plays a prominent role in the Battle of Nacogdoches (na·kuh·dow·chuhs), an often overlooked but important battle for freedom. Fearing for her father and brother’s safety, Alexa Anderson opposes the formation of a Texian militia. Rebels risked being shot by firing squads at the Mexican army’s fort in Nacogdoches.
Nacogdoches is believed to be the oldest town in Texas and is located in beautiful East Texas, about five hours north and east of our ranch in Central Texas. This historic town made a great setting for a story that occurs in 1824, although the battle actually occurred six years later in 1832.
I hope this novel helps my readers to understand what it might have been like in Texas in 1824. Many of us have ancestors who invested their lives and blood to settle this country and we owe it to them to remember their sacrifices and incredible courage. In fact, it was my husband's ancestors, very early settlers of Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas that inspired all fourteen of my novels.
As I imagined what James Bowie, one of the main characters in the book, might have said, "Texians are here at the invitation of first Spain and then Mexico both of which wanted Americans to fight Indians for them and to grow crops and raise livestock. They have come from all over America, traveled hundreds of miles, and endured great hardships to get here. They have bled upon, plowed, and nurtured this land with calloused hands."

For those of you unfamiliar with my novels, this is a journey that began in New England in 1797 when the youngest of five brothers, Stephen, convinced his brothers to make the thousand-mile journey to Kentucky with him. After this first series ended with the sixth book and nearly 1,000 Five-Star reviews, I knew there was more to the story and started the Wilderness Hearts Series, four novels about the grown children of the brothers in the first series. These four novels are all highly rated on Amazon and have received terrific reviews. Again, thank you, readers!
After I finished the fourth book in that series, I was burning to tell readers about the real-life Wileys who moved from Kentucky to Louisiana and then to the Province of Texas 200 years ago. So, I started researching and writing the Wilderness Dawning Series. The first book in this new series, RED RIVER RIFLES, set in the Province of Texas in 1818, continues the Wyllie family saga. The hero of this tale is the now grown Samuel, the son of Stephen from the very first book. Samuel's uncle is Captain Sam, the well-loved hero of the second book.
Readers seem to grow attached to my characters (especially Bear and Baldy). Partly because many of the family members appear in all three series and the reader has a chance to really get to know them and follow their lives. So, I want to welcome long-time readers back to the frontier and the characters they have come to love. I promise new readers a beautiful, heart-warming, always exciting, and sometimes tragic adventure that will keep you waiting for the next book.
As many of you know, for many years I have lived on a ranch in Central Texas, even though I grew up in a beach town in southern California. Even as a teenager, I had an abiding love of western values, wide-open spaces, and the kind of free-spirited heroes who created our country.
