A Chat with Norma Flatman - Author

Now before we move on: This lady has a new book out!! Consumed is available for preorder!!
MOVING ON!
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written/want to write?
I’m never very good at talking about myself, but I’ll do my best. I write under the name NJ Flatman, but my friends call me Jenni. I live in Michigan with my 16 year old daughter. I learned to read and write at 4 and I’ve been creating stories and poems since. My dream has always been to be an author, but like many I got sidetracked with jobs and bills and life.
I’ve written many books as I’ve been a ghostwriter in romance and erotic romance for several years but nobody knows me because my name was never on them. My theory was that I could pay the bills doing what I loved and break into the writing world. Reality was I ended up with a lot of work, a little money and I realized I was just going to have to combine working and writing my own books if I ever wanted to see it happen.
Consumed is my debut novel releasing on June 5, 2015. It is the first in a series of 5 stories (Addicted to You series). As far as how many I want to write? As many as I can before my hands don’t work and then I’ll just have someone else type. It’s what I love.
Me: Oh I hear you lovely! What I would like to know more about is this ghostwriting business... That should make for another good discussion! I hope everyone marked the date down! We have a few new Authors entering into the Indie Market!! I will be highlighting parts of Norma's work throughout the week, so check back with us.
What Genre do you write, and what genre do you enjoy reading?
As a ghostwriter I wrote mostly in the erotic romance genre, some romance. But my books are romance with a dark side. I believe in love and that it can be good and real, but I don’t believe it’s always happy or perfect. That’s what I enjoy writing about. People who overcome serious things to find their way.
I read a multitude of genres. Romance, erotic romance, paranormal romance, mystery, crime, thrillers and psychotic thrillers. If a story grabs my interest I read it.
Me: Now see, this I like, turns out, we're kindred spirits where it comes to books!
What is the name of your latest book/s and what inspired it?

My debut book is Consumed. Honestly, I was texting with a friend about something and I made a very long winded comment (something I’m good at) and then I said wow that’d make a great part of a story. So I wrote it down and then wrote a scene around it. I thought I need to do something with that so I sat there and wrote the first chapter. And the story was born. I knew exactly what I wanted the series to be about so it flowed quickly and easily. I think the original scene ended up in chapter 11 or so.
Me: *LAUGHING SO HARD* Oh that is just fantastic! I really enjoy hearing how it works for others, and this is just amazing!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Everything I do is unusual haha. I don’t think so. I listen to music a lot. Usually something that puts me in the mindset of the story. Sad scene= sad music etc. I think the weirdest thing about me is that when something is in me, I don’t stop. I just write until I can’t write anymore. I’ve been known to write for 2-3 days without sleeping lol
Me: Right! Hubby refers to this as the "Character Take-over period." It is no different to a PC man being in the 'zone' when coding. I love that you listen to music, I think it is great to draw from sound while we make up things. hehe
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Wow there are so many! I love to read and I read so much. I think Nora Roberts has a lot even though I don’t really read a lot of her work (I’m not a sappy happy kind of girl) because she changed the playing field in romance and because she produces soooo much work so consistently. I thought I was the only one that can write that fast lol. John Grisham just because he really pulls a person into the story and he tells it so well. Jodi Picoult is amazing because she writes about things that most people don’t. E.L James did as well because she took what she loved and did it and created something out of it and made a genre that most kept quiet about become maintream. I like that. And of course all the Indie authors out there who work a day job and then put all of this work into doing what they love.
Me: Now controversial as it may be, I love E.L James - though I will say I am not a erotic reader, I do not mind there being bit of the human nature in the books. Indie Authors are my new addiction! I have met so many, and the amount of creativity is ASTOUNDING.

I’m finishing the Addicted to You Series because I have it scheduled to release one every two months. I hate having to wait too long to continue a story. And I have another idea already taking shape for following that. I’m always writing something ☺
Me: Oh the joys, I must admit, I envy you for the ability to release every two months! I'd have a field day... if I've had the skill.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
At the moment I’m winging it and not sure what works best. But the bloggers that I’ve been talking to and working with have been amazing. I also try to get out there and chatting with readers even if they aren’t mine and other authors as much as I can. But in the end, all I can do is get my name out. The stories have to be what does it.
Me: I know there are nay-sayers out there, but I am a 'hands on' kinda girl - I find that this 'automation stuff' actually upsets me so the chatting with readers stuff I will encourage.
Do you have any advice for new authors like yourself?
Research. Connect with others who do this, they are amazing. Give up on the ideas of sleep, relaxing or quality time with pretty much anyone haha. Do it because you love it and it’ll be worth it.
Me: HAHA! This is too funny, though I suppose it is also very appropriate - There is a balance to be found, but ... I'll let you know when we find it!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Live like you could die tomorrow, but pay your bills just in case. Not sure where I heard it, but I love it and try to strive for it.
Me: Oh I like that!!
From beginning to end, how long does/did it take you to write your book?
2-3 days initially, then I put it aside and go back to it a few days later and if I do massive changing another 2-3 days. So maybe a week. Like I said when I’m into it, I can’t stop.
Me: Holy mother and I thought I wrote fast! Well done lady, very well done!
What are you reading now?
Between working, toting my daughter around for theater stuff and doing stuff for my release I haven’t been able to read anything in recent days and still sleep. But I just recently won a copy of Mistaken Identity and Christmas with the Dragon by Amy Beth and I am eager to dive into those. I also have a new to me Dean Koontz book that I’m ready to read on the beach
What’s next for you as a writer?
Try not to have a heart attack when my book releases. Keep doing what I love. Keep growing as I write more. Keep chatting with readers and others in the business and hope that someday I can quit the day job.
Me: That sounds like a very good plan - I definitely encourage the first part!
Tell us something very few people know about you!
I watch people wherever I’m at. Sometimes body language or phrases in my stories come from people I know or people I’ve observed.
Me: Oh dear, and again, we have a term for that in our house, hubby calls it "Character profiling." He knows it will show up at some point! Though it is for me, also the best way to interpret people and cultivate empathy, don't you think?
What is your favorite book of all time?
Don’t judge me, but the Twilight series. I didn’t even like vampires and stuff when I read them, but I read the entire series four times in one week. I loved the way I felt connected with the story and the characters. I loved the connection between the characters. I think regardless of whether you like the storyline or some of the things about it, anyone who has read the books would say it was well written in terms of grabbing the reader.
Me: Now why would anyone judge you about that? I wrote three Epic Novels, and the feedback I'm getting refer to Twilight often. Naught wrong with it, and don't apologise for what you read, EVER. Some people don't read at all unless they HAVE to.

Meet Author Wendi Hulsey
Hi hi Lovelies!
Busy busy day ahead, but what would it be without making good on my promises to you huh?
Please allow me to introduce you to Wendi Hulsey - Indie Author and Take Over Event writer!
My name is Wendi Hulsey. I was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin, just south of Milwaukee. After several vacations to the sunshine state, my husband and I fell in love with the warm weather and decided to have a house built in Florida. I miss my family and friends up north; however, I will never regret not having to shovel snow again. I have been a registered nurse for about ten years. I currently work on a medical/surgical unit, preferring to work the night shift.
My husband and I have been married for sixteen years, and I appreciate his support during this endeavor. I have one son who is a hard working grown man now living on his own. He has blessed me with the most precious grandson and a wonderful future daughter in law. My daughter is a beautiful and smart teenager who excels at just about anything she tries. She enjoys playing soccer and we have spent numerous hours on various soccer fields. I am blessed to have my mother, a retired cook, living with me and she is a great help with cooking, cleaning, and chauffeuring the teenager. Other members of our family include; one dog, one cat, two turtles and several fish.
My love for reading began at the age of twelve on a stormy day. With nothing to do I was bugging my mother, she said, “Go read a book.” I have never stopped. As a teenager, I preferred horror books, mainly Stephen King. As I age, my reading tastes change and I currently read mysteries, romance, or erotica. It has always been my dream to write a book. Although writing is a hobby for me, I hope to produce a book to the best of my abilities and hope you have enjoyed what you read. Thank you for your support.
We're not done yet!
Wendi Hulsey has provided a few bits for us to indulge in! YIP! Have a look at these beauties!

Txt Author's Interview: A.D Ellis
Good morning my lovelies!!
Tuesday already hey... but what a treat Do I have for us all today.
I met this gorgeous little lady through a group of Authors, and immediately she made me smile and agreed to a text interview.
Delayed, here is the result!

A.D. Ellis is somewhere in her mid-thirties and feels as if she’s just getting to a point in her life where she feels most like herself. She is a wife, mother, inner city alternative education school teacher from Indiana.
A.D. is a reader, a writer, and realistic to a fault. Impatient, sarcastic, cheap, creative, stoic, organized, and funny are words which could be used to describe her.
A lover of pizza, chocolate, unsweetened tea, but not a fan of super spicy food, crunchy onions, or celery.
A.D. is taller than many of her friends and family at 5’8”. She enjoys going to the gym for cardio and weight training. When she has the time, A.D. loves to dig in and search for great deals at thrift stores.
She began writing her first novel in October 2013 and published it in April 2014.
You can get in touch with this lovely Lady over here: I encourage polite stalking. Just saying.
What does your writing process look like?
I usually let a story dance around in my head for a few weeks to a month (depending on what my life looks like at that time). Then I plot it out (just main plot points, nothing set in stone). Once I start writing, the characters just sort of take over and tell their story.
Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?
I have to have time to write, I can’t just sit down and pop something out in 15-20 minutes. I know some authors live to get 10 minutes of writing in on their lunch break at work. Not me, I need to know I’ve got a couple hours at least so I can submerse myself in the story.
What book do you wish you could have written?

Maybe one of the classics? I’d probably like to have written a great book for younger readers because I love to watch young ones find joy in reading (and before you ask, I *DO* have plans in mind for some books directed towards younger readers….someday….when the mothering and day job aren’t so demanding)
But, honestly, overall I’m happy to say I’ve written MY books. They are great stories, with fabulous characters and strong family bonds. I love them because they are a great mix of sweet and sexy, and they also are about people I’d love to have as family and friends.
Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?
This list is honestly too long to even contemplate writing. From the very first books my mother read me as a toddler, to the books I was assigned to read in high school and college, to the traditionally published big name authors, to the fabulous indies I’ve met on this journey….every author I’ve ever read has had a part in my inspiration to write stories.
If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?
Jesse Pavelka would be Nate Morgan (after publishing For Nicky, I found out that Jesse has a tattoo that says For my brother…this blew me away. If you ever read For Nicky, you’ll understand why this is unbelievable coincidence) Marco Dapper would be Jeremiah Jordan, and Mateus Verdelho would be Kyle Martin.Me: So I stalked these folk in order to bring you visuals right- CAN YOU BELIEVE that the STUNNING Marco's FB page has less than 600 likes? LADIES & GENTS HELP THE MAN OUT! He is EVER so good to look at! GO on, click, like, drool, wipe, move on!
How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?
In my first book, I just had the twins’ names in mind (Nate and Nicky) from the very beginning. From that book to my latest release I try to make sure the name is something I like, it sounds good with other names, maybe has a nickname. In my newest series, the Nate’s twins are Decker (named after his mom’s maiden name) and Sawyer and they have their dad and uncle’s names for middle names. I will use baby naming sites sometimes when I’m looking for first and last names that go well together.

In my personal life, I’m very proud of my teaching career and my children. In my writing journey, I’m proud of publishing 5 books (working on #6) while still being mom, wife, and teacher. I’m proud that my books touch readers, and that the stories stay true to real life.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I’d love to be writing full time. If that’s not happening, I’ll likely still be devoting my time and energy to helping inner city school children learn. I’ll have a 20-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son by that point….oh wow, yeah, let’s not go there right now.
Were you already a great writer? Have you always liked to write?
I don’t think I’m a great writer, and I definitely wasn’t already a great writer. However, I have been writing for a while (but it was mostly informational type articles). I never enjoyed assigned writing in high school and college because it felt forced. But, now that I’m writing what *I* want to write I really enjoy it.
What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?
Write, keep writing, don’t stop writing. It’s a very hard business. You will have ten downs for every one or two ups, but don’t give up. If you get stuck, take a break. That may mean a few hours or a few weeks or a few months, but if writing is in your heart, don’t stop. As long as *1* person reads and is touched by your words, you are a success.
If you didn't like writing books, what would you do for a living?
Even though I like writing books, it doesn’t pay the bills. I’m an inner city alternative education school teacher. If I hadn’t become a teacher, I think I’d like to work in the health field in possibly physical or occupational therapy.
Are you a plotter or a pantster?
I’m a plotter in the beginning and then I let the characters take over.
Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?
I read each and every one of them. I never respond to the negative reviews (lesson #1 when I started this thing). Sometimes, if a person posts their review on Facebook or the like I will comment or say thank you, but overall I don’t respond to reviews.
Getting past bad reviews is hard, but you have to thicken up your skin. A bad review stings and can stay with you for days, but I always try to find something worthwhile in the review that I can use (unless it’s just a plain mean review, I ignore those). It gets somewhat easier as time goes on.

What is your best marketing tip?
Being as visible as possible, connecting with readers, being involved and not just hawking books. I like to talk to readers, I consider many of my readers friends. Yes, I spend much of my time marketing, but I also like to just be a real person and connect with new and interesting people. This author journey has allowed me to do that like never before.
What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?
The actual typing! I wish it would just flow from my head onto the page without actually typing the words. Rereads and edits and proofreading can be tedious and taxing as well.
Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?
I never say never. I’m writing a male/male contemporary romance right now. When I started this whole writing journey, I would have never thought I’d write a M/M, but when this new series grew in my head I already knew that Sawyer was gay (I’d known since I wrote him as a little boy) so I knew I had to be true to him and write a gay romance.
Do you have a favorite conference to attend? What is it?
I would love to attend a RWA conference and a RT conference. Maybe someday.
Is there a certain type of scene that's harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?
I have to be in the right frame of mind to write certain scenes. A sad scene finds me typing through tears. A racy scene has me locking the door so I’m safe from my kids busting in. I love to write a funny scene; I find myself giggling throughout.

Is this your first book? How many books have you written prior (if any?)
I have 5 books published and I’m working on #6 with #7 and #8 planned to round out the Torey Hope saga.
What are you working on now? What is your next project? I’m currently writing Sawyer (Torey Hope: The Later Years). It’s a male/male contemporary romance although it continues the real-life, emotional, strong family bonds in my previous books.
With the official stuff out of the way, I switched things up with A.D - and how much fun was this? AH LOT!
1. Print book vs Ebook - which do you prefer?
I love print, but ebooks are easier (especially when I do most of my reading at night in bed)
2. Tell us something about you that very few people know.
I don’t have tons of secrets….I have 5 tattoos but most people know that. I terrified of deep open water. I don’t like the dark.
3. Do you talk out loud to your characters?
If yes, which one and what about? Not so much out loud, but in my head I play scenes with them.
4. Have you ever gained an injury as a writer? [PAPERCUTS COUNTS!]
I often find myself with wrist/hand pain when I’ve been typing too long.
5. What is under your bed?
Um, remember my fear of the dark? Well, under my bed is a dark and scary place. I haven’t ventured there in a very long time.
6. Do you ever read your own work and forget you wrote it?
Yes! There have been times when a reader points something out and I have to go back and reread to refresh my memory!
7. Pen or Pencil?
Pen
8. Do you sometimes mix up a character with friends and family?
No, but I *DO* have to have a family tree in front of me when writing so that I keep the large families in my books straight.
9. Tell us your most favourite snackfood & drink.
I love gummy bears, chocolate covered peanuts, unsweetened tea.
10. Do you have other hobbies? What are they?
I love to read, go to the gym, spend time with family.
