Medieval Monday with Ruth A. Casie
Welcome to Medieval Monday and the second week of our Celebration theme. Today for your reading pleasure I have the lovely Ruth A. Casie with her next snippet and isn’t this cover just divine? Happy reading, my lovelies!
Excerpt:
In the grip of a silent panic, her heart raced. Surely, she should say something more…
“I understand ye’re leaving us tomorrow. I was afraid I wouldna see ye. Wi’ so much ta do in th’ village, there is barely time ta…” A knot in her throat made it difficult for her to swallow. She didn’t want him to leave. “As clan chieftain, I want ta give my thanks for all yer help. It hasn’t gone unnoticed by th’ people, or by me.” The man who stood before her was so strong, had a commanding presence, and was handsome. That hadn’t gone unnoticed either. “I spoke out of place before and regret if I offended ye.”
She let out a frustrated breath and licked her lips. Why didn’t she plan this with more care?
“Please, don’t do that again,” he said.
She gazed at him, not sure what he meant.
“Lick your lips,” he clarified. “They’ll get dry and cracked.”
Her fingers went to her lips. In a heartbeat, his face changed from cool indifference to tender concern. Then a playful smirk lightened his features. Her body reacted to the change that suddenly came over him. The tingling in the pit of her stomach took her by surprise.
The Pirate’s Redemption
by Ruth A. Casie
Blurb:
After her beloved father dies, Moira MacDougall becomes chieftain of their small clan. She is tested on every level, not only by her councilors who question her every move, but also by an exiled Englishman who raids her village under the guise of a notorious pirate, Gareth Talbot.
He wants the secret weapon Moira possesses, and will do anything to get his hands on it—including committing murder so he can give it to King Henry to prove his worthiness and be welcomed home.
Moira will follow her destiny and do whatever is necessary to protect her clan.
The real Gareth Talbot is through with love. His last romance did not end well. He suffered a broken heart and doesn’t trust women.
Humiliated, Gareth goes to sea and becomes a captain for MacAlpin, the pirate king. When raids along the Scottish coast are blamed on him, he seeks revenge. Nothing less than death will do.
Moira and Gareth are on different missions but seek the same goal. Can they work together and eliminate their greatest enemy, and in the process, find the one thing they didn’t know they were searching for, true love?

Enjoy this first kiss scene between Amiria & Dristan. If you recall, she’s been ill and Dristan is attempting to cool her fever. Get out your fans… you’re going to need it!
Excerpt:
No sense in putting off the inevitable, he thought and gave a silent prayer that God would forgive him for his deed. He stripped off his clothing and left them neatly folded on a stool by the hearth. With a heavy sigh, he looked down upon his chest and saw the four strips of tender flesh where Amiria’s nails had raked him the last time he plunged her into the tub whilst she fought him like the very devil.
He went to the bed and gazed down upon his beautiful lady. He could think of her as nothing else for she would in truth become his wife once she was well again. ’Twas whilst he stared at her that he began to notice the slight beginnings of a smile playing upon her lips, and he pondered what she dreamed of. She began to stir most alluringly and whispered his name as provocatively and sweetly as any lover could.
He pulled the coverings from Amiria and lifted her into his arms. She molded her body closer to his own and his heart began to beat a little faster. Dristan was caught off guard, feeling her silky limbs wrapping themselves around his neck. The warmth of her lips began to nuzzle his neck and she gave a sigh of contentment as his arms held her tighter.
“You came for me… I knew you would,” she purred into his ear in a soft confident whisper.
“Aye, so it appears,” he said as a tingle went through him with the feel of her breath in his ear. Carrying her to the tub placed by the fire, he slowly swung his legs over its rim to feel the water at his knees. “Brace yourself, Amiria.” She held him tighter as he began to sink down into their bath. Water sloshed over the sides onto the floor the lower he brought them.
“’Tis too cold,” she said groggily with a shiver, trying to get closer to the very heart of him.
“’Tis for the best, my lady, and will make you well again.”
“I do not like it,” she said with a pout and proceeded to turn in his arms.
Afore Dristan could cease her motion, Amiria lifted slightly away from him, moving both legs to either side of his own, and promptly sat down upon his upper thighs with a wiggle of her bare bottom. This certainly was not what he had intended whilst he watched in fascination her fixed glassy eyes take in his face. Her tongue moistened her lips. Smiling, she stole a quick fleeting kiss.
“Warm me,” she demanded, molding herself to his chest and lowering her lips to receive another of his kisses as if she had done so a dozen times afore.
A part of him sprang to life against his better judgment and yet he could not for the life of him cease the intoxicating kiss she gave him. He breathed life into her as their tongues intertwined in a dance known to lovers for centuries. For just a moment longer would he indulge in what she offered, for he knew she would not remember what she did once she was herself again.
He cupped her head, bringing her closer and deepened their kiss. His fingers tangled themselves in the length of her hair ’til he could stand no more. His hands lowered themselves down her back in a gentle caress. She sighed in pleasure and Dristan heard the throaty moan that escaped her. He would have smiled through their kiss if ’twere possible for he had the notion he had awakened a temptress that would forever belong only to him.
She pulled away from his lips with a shake of her glorious red mane and gave a satisfying laugh. Her eyes widened in bewilderment from the hardness of him against her naked flesh. “I have roused my dragon, I see,” she smirked knowingly.
“That you have my dear, but you must yield the day for I would not have you hate me come the morrow. I am, after all, just a man with a man’s desires.”
“You want me then as I want you?” she inquired shyly with a blush to her face.
Dristan gave a brief laugh and caressed her cheek as she leaned into the palm of his hand. “Aye, my lady, more than I should but we cannot continue this.”
“Who are you to say we cannot?”
“I am your liege lord, Amiria. When we come together I would have you more yourself that you remember our first time together as husband and wife.”
Her brows puckered into a frown as she pondered his words. “Are we not wed?” she whispered in puzzlement. Afore he could answer, she continued onward with a brazen look upon her features. “It matters not,” she declared possessively, “for you belong to me!”
Dristan watched his lady as she for the first time hesitantly reach out and began running her fingers over his wet furred chest. Making small circles, she watched him through lowered lids and he shivered at her touch. He sat back amused at her expression since he could tell she was enjoying the feel of his skin beneath her fingertips. Her hushed words confirmed his suspicions.
“I somehow thought a dragon such as you would be smooth to the touch and not covered with so much hair. I believe I like it better this way…” she declared, with a promise reaching her eyes.

Medieval Monday with Sherry Ewing
Welcome to Medieval Monday and our next theme which is celebrations. For the next eleven weeks, I’ll be keeping you entertained with excerpts from authors you’ve come to love! To start us out, I’m sharing an excerpt from my novella To Love A Scottish Laird: De Wolfe Pack Connected World. In this beginning scene, Laird Douglas MacLaren of Berwyck Castle and Lady Catherine de Wolfe have both journeyed to Caen France to celebrate the marriage of the Duke of Normandy. Little did they know that the Duke has his own plans for the pair. Happy reading and enjoy, my lovelies!
Excerpt:
Douglas left the duke’s solar and took the stairs two at a time ’til he reached the lower floor. He was uncertain if he should rejoice or curse heaven that his life had taken an unexpected turn? Was he not already contemplating marrying some unknown Englishwoman? He should not be complaining, the lady chosen for him by the duke was the one he liked. Mayhap that was the issue
’Twas as though he had no say in the matter. And to stay in the future king’s good graces, he would have to do as asked. Douglas may be stubborn to a fault at times but he was not a fool.

First Kiss Friday with guest Lyz Kelley
Today on my Frist Kiss Friday blog I’d like to introduce you to my new author friend, Lyz Kelley. Lyz and I recently met in Texas when we attended the Buns & Roses Fundraiser for Literacy. Excerpt:
“Mara, you’re a genius. Sam’s hand is gripping something, and he’s pointing a finger.”
Before his mind engaged, Joey grabbed Mara and gave her a sound kiss on the lips. In that single beat of his heart, he instantly regretted the spontaneous act. He’d been thinking about kissing her for a lifetime, and the kiss he’d just given her seemed an eternity away from his fantasy. In his dreams, the connection was tender and satisfying.
He stopped and cupped her jaw. “I’m sorry. That was inappropriate, especially here, in this place. I wasn’t thinking, but I have to tell you, I’ve been waiting a long time to kiss you.” He took a step back. “It’s just this place. Sam. Wanting to spend time with you. It’s a lot to deal with all at once.”
“I’m sure coming back, dealing with your dad, and your own grief, it must be hard.”
“It seems so surreal. Sam’s gone. He’s really gone.”
Mara touched his chest, then slid her arm up to touch his face. “If I could take your pain away, I would.”
“You can’t.” The sting behind his eyes intensified.
“I know.”
He leaned in to capture her lips. The sweet kiss felt comfortable, like a soft summer breeze, even though the temperature hovered around freezing. When he lifted his head, he interpreted her facial expressions, and damn if he didn’t see disappointment.
“Mara?”
“I’m not breakable,” she whispered, then tugged him closer. “Kiss me like you mean it. Let me help ease your pain.”

First Kiss Friday with guest Tricia Linden
Welcome to my First Kiss Friday blog! Today’s guest is Tricia Linden who has an excerpt from her latest release, Until A Change of Heart. I loved this book and it kept me up until the early morning hours. I couldn’t put it down and I know you’ll enjoy it too! Happy reading, my lovelies, and enjoy!
Excerpt:
As they rounded the corner, she saw they had reached the hedgerow overlooking the back lawn. Both grateful and weary, Sarah sat down on a nearby bench to rest and rub her aching feet. If only she could remove her shoes, it would be so much better, but such a display of undress would surely give him the wrong impression.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
She was tempted to claim she couldn’t take another step so he would be forced to carry her, but that seemed unreasonable and manipulative, and much too forward for her to attempt. “I’m fine,” she declared.
“Are you sure? My offer to carry you still stands. I’m happy to oblige if needed.”
The thought of him lifting her up in his arms sent a pulse of heat through her core. Good thing she was sitting down. If she had been standing, surely her knees would have wobbled. To feel those strong arms around her, protecting her, was a hard temptation to resist. To wrap her arms around his neck and snuggle up against his chest would surely be amazing. Sadly, such dreams were the fantasies of lovers, not adversaries delayed on their way back home.
Before she knew what had happened, he pulled her to his chest and scooped her up in his arms. It was every bit as wonderful and exciting as she had imagined. No. Actually, this was much better than what she had imagined. This was real.
She leaned in close, resting her head on his shoulder. “Jayson, this really isn’t proper.”
“I couldn’t resist.”
That was exactly what she wanted to hear. Except, realistically, she needed to be practical. Someone might see them, and she wasn’t about to let him carry her the rest of the way to the house. “It’s nice to know you would do this for me.” More than nice, it was divine. “But you really should put me down. I can walk.”
“Do you insist?” he asked, still holding her.
Laughing, she replied, “No, I’m asking politely.”
He dropped her feet to the ground and she stood before him, still locked in his embrace. “As you wish.”
Leaning in close, he brushed his lips gently against hers. Her first kiss. Sweet and heavenly. The thrilling sensation had her gasping for breath. Cupping her face in his hands, he deepened the kiss, pressing his lips tenderly against hers. She moaned softly as the feeling of warm butter slid over her skin and down to her toes. How was it possible that the mere meeting of lips should cause her brain to melt? Yearning and desire rose up inside her more powerful than anything she had ever felt before.
When he pulled back, she opened her eyes to find a contented smile dancing in his eyes.
“I’ve wanted to do that since I first saw you today.” Still smiling, he added, “I hope you’re not offended.”
“Umm, no, not really.” Offended? Goodness no, she wasn’t offended. She was delighted. Far more delighted than she was willing to admit, being a properly raised young lady.
“Should I stop?”
Stop! Good heavens, no. But that wasn’t the proper answer. “We should probably get back to the house. They’ll be looking for us.” Darn, it hurt to always be so proper, but changing old habits didn’t come easy.
“As you wish.”
In truth, she wished he would kiss her and hold her here forever. Although such an idea wasn’t very practical, that didn’t stop her from wanting it. The thought of sharing her first kiss with Jayson brought a smile to her lips and a shiver down her spine. The man was pure temptation wrapped in a fashionable, well-fitting jacket. And he smelled good, too.
But she was a proper girl who more often than not did the right thing. She stepped away, ending their embrace. Despite the warmth of the day, she felt cold all over.
She hated how the logical side of her won out over her emotional desires, but that was how she’d been raised. Nineteen years of her mother’s preaching wasn’t going to vanish in an instant simply because a handsome man held her in his arms. Her conscience might take a beating, but it wasn’t going to go away at a moment’s notice.
They were expected back at the house and were already going to have a hard time explaining their delay.
“We need to get back. They’re probably looking for us,” Sarah repeated for her sake as much as for his.
“When we see the others, let me do the talking,” Jayson offered, as if he shared her same thoughts. “Don’t worry, Sarah. I won’t do anything to embarrass you.”
“Or dishonor me?” she asked.
“Never in a hundred years,” he answered.
“How about in two hundred years?” she teased.
“That I can’t promise. That’s a pretty long time to behave myself.”

First Kiss Friday with Judith Sterling & a Giveaway!
We’re starting out November’s First Kiss Friday blog with a giveaway thanks to my lovely guest, Judith Sterling. You’ve seen Judith here before including on our Medieval Monday blogs that will begin shortly. Sit back and enjoy this excerpt from Night of the Owl and don’t forget to leave her a comment to be in the running for her giveaway. We’ll leave it open until Sunday when a random comment will be generated! Happy reading, my lovelies!
Excerpt:
Hugh stormed into the cave, unable to stem the tide of jealousy swelling inside him. A pox on Ranulf! Ardyth thought him smart, talented, kind, and handsome. She told me she didn’t need a man. Now here she is, half in love with a goliard!
Her arms dropped to her sides, and she stumbled backwards.
He stopped and frowned. “Why do you recoil?”
She halted and lifted her chin. “Why do you look so angry?”
With purposeful strides, he closed the distance between them. “I met Lady Isobel near the gatehouse. She told me you were here, talking of Ranulf.”
“Oh, she did! How good of her to report my every move, and how predictable that you prize her opinion above mine.”
“As you prize Ranulf above other men?” He clenched his fists, willing her to contradict him yet knowing she wouldn’t.
“What are you talking about?”
“I saw the pair of you last night…conversing cozily in the hall. ʼTis obvious he’s claimed your affections, though how I cannot—”
“What?!” Her flushed face was a mask of disbelief.
“You heard me.”
“I did, but I doubted my ears. A man of your depth and perception must’ve realized that…”
His clamped fingers relaxed. “Realized…what exactly?”
“Must I say it out loud?”
“I think you’d better.”
With a huff, she rolled her eyes. “Ranulf is just a friend. If there’s anyone I like around here, ʼtis you!”
He hesitated only an instant, long enough to absorb what she’d said. Then he grasped her arms, pulled her to him, and pressed his lips to hers.
Breaking free of his hold, she took his face between her hands and returned his kiss with passionate abandon. Her tongue took the lead. Her moan harmonized with the howling wind. She tasted of elderberries, ginger, and honey. Of lust and life. Heat rushed through him, heightening every sense as he gave himself to the kiss.

A little extra…
The hero and heroine’s mutual love of history reflects my husband’s and mine. You might say history brought us together because right around the same time, each of us decided independently to move from different parts of the country to Virginia, specifically to seek work at Colonial Williamsburg. Nowadays, we work (respectively) at The House of the Seven Gables and The Witch House here in Salem, MA. There’s a lot of both of us in Night of the Owl. That’s why the release date is perfect; it’s our 19th wedding anniversary. As if that isn’t enough, I wore my hair almost exactly like the cover model’s on the big day. Neither my publisher nor the cover artist knew about either coincidence. Pretty cool, right?!

Happy Release Day ~ The Earl Takes A Wife!
You first met Lord Adrian de Courtenay and Lady Celia Lacey in A Kiss For Charity. Now you can see what happens in their journey to finding love in The Earl Takes A Wife! I hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it. Happy reading, my lovelies!
Excerpt:
“I suspect, before long, we shall all be family, if Grace and your uncle have anything to say on the matter.” Adrian assumed there would be a wedding celebration in the near future.
“Do you think so?” she whispered, her eyes bright with excitement. “We would see each other often if they were to marry.”
Adrian cleared his throat, stepping several paces backwards to distance himself. She, in turn, advanced. “Yes, well… I suppose such may be the case. Time will tell.
“Time… yes… time is all we need. Will you wait for me Lord de Courtenay… Adrian?”
“W-wait for you?” he stammered. “Where the devil is your chaperon?” Good Lord, what had he gotten himself into? This situation had gotten out of hand faster than he ever expected. He went around her to open the door, but the key was missing. Turning back, she waved what he needed.
“Looking for this?” she laughed.
The little scamp! “Lady Celia,” Adrian began, holding his palm upward. “The key, if you please.”
She laughed. “Oh, very well,” she replied, handing the shiny brass object over; it was still warm from her touch. “You do not have to be so formal. As you said, we might be related one day.”
Adrian turned the key in the lock and opened the door. “All the more reason to adhere to the rules of Society. You are the daughter of a duke and should not be alone with a single male, especially me.”
A giggle of girlish delight burst from her lips. “I am certain I am perfectly safe in your company, Adrian,” she said, dropping all formality between them.
Blurb:
Lady Celia Lacey is too young for a husband, especially man-about-town Lord Adrian de Courtenay. But when she meets him at a house party, she falls in love and cannot get him out of her mind. Will he ever think she is old enough to become his wife?
Adrian finds appealing innocent Lady Celia Lacey impossible to forget, though she is barely out of the schoolroom and a relative by marriage. If they are constantly in each other’s company, then how can he move on without her?
His sister’s deceptions bring them together but destroys their happiness. Can they reach past the hurt to the love that still burns?

First Kiss Friday with Jude Knight
It’s always a pleasure when I can welcome back Jude Knight to my First Kiss Friday blog. Today, she’ll be sharing an excerpt from her novella in the Bluestocking Belles’ boxset, Fire & Ice. It’s currently available for pre-order. Release date is February 4th. Happy reading, my lovelies!
In this excerpt from Melting Matilda, a novella in the Bluestocking Belles’ box set Fire and Frost, Matilda is remembering their first kiss. For the scene with the actual kiss, you’ll have to wait until next year. Jude has rewritten the story of the house party from the novella The Bluestocking and the Barbarian into the novel To Wed a Proper Lady. Matilda and Charles are two of the secondary characters, and it will be out sometime early in 2020.
Excerpt:
Matilda stared in shock at the elegant figure before her. If the Granite Earl was imposing in his daytime wear, he was enthralling when dressed for the evening, all in black but for his white cravat and gloves, and his embroidered silver waistcoat.
“Miss Grenford?” He was too polite ever to sound impatient, but his imperious hand hinted that he expected an answer, and assumed it would be affirmative.
Jessica gave her a nudge. If Matilda did not accept Lord Hamner’s invitation to dance, she would be unable to accept any others this evening, and then Aunt Eleanor would wish to know why. She managed to smile and curtsey.
“Thank you, my lord.” She placed her hand in his, and even though they were both gloved, his touch set her quaking. Heaven’s mercy! It was a waltz: an entire set dancing with him alone, holding his hand, his arm around her, staring into his eyes. Why had he asked her to dance?
No one she had danced with since she came out—whether bored, charming, slyly lecherous, condescending, pompous, or openly eager to court the favor of Her Grace or Aldridge through her—no one affected her like Lord Hamner.
She had felt it the first time they danced, a week or so into her first Season, nearly two years ago. A tingle when they touched. An awareness of his physical presence even when they were separated by the patterns of the dance. An aching response in her own body, as if she were suddenly hollowed out and yearning for something unknown.
He did not ask her again that Season, though they frequently attended the same events.
The next time was at the Masquerade Ball held at the duchess’s Christmas house party at Christmas that same year. When she accepted his invitation, she hoped that her previous response reflected her inexperience. But all the dances in between, all the partners in between, made no difference. If anything, the sensations were worse.
He felt something, too, she was sure, because he became stiffer than ever, and would barely look at her. When the music ended, he held his arm away from his body and escorted her to the nearest side of the floor. Noticing how flushed she was, he suggested some fresh air, but as soon as they were alone, the proper distance between them vanished. He kissed her. She kissed him back, her heart singing, only to drop through her dancing slippers when he walked away. She repulsed him with her wanton response: she just knew it.
He left the party the next day, but that was nothing to do with Matilda. Lady Felicity, but her friends called her Fliss, told those closest to her that he had proposed—and Fliss had refused him–the very next morning after that magic kiss, the rat.
Melting Matilda
Her scandalous birth prevents Matilda Grenford from being fully acceptable to Society, even though she has been a ward of the Duchess of Haverford since she was a few weeks old. Matilda does not expect to be wooed by a worthy gentleman. The only man who has ever interested her gave her an outrageous kiss a year ago and has avoided her ever since.
Charles, the Earl of Hamner is honour bound to ignore his attraction to Matilda Grenford. She is an innocent and a lady, and in every way worthy of his respect—but she is base-born. His ancestors would rise screaming from their graves if he made her his countess. But he cannot forget the kiss they once shared.

About Jude Knight
Have you ever wanted something so much you were afraid to even try? That was Jude ten years ago.
For as long as she can remember, she’s wanted to be a novelist. She even started dozens of stories, over the years.
But life kept getting in the way. A seriously ill child who required years of therapy; a rising mortgage that led to a full-time job; six children, her own chronic illness… the writing took a back seat.
As the years passed, the fear grew. If she didn’t put her stories out there in the market, she wouldn’t risk making a fool of herself. She could keep the dream alive if she never put it to the test.
Then her mother died. That great lady had waited her whole life to read a novel of Jude’s, and now it would never happen.
So Jude faced her fear and changed it–told everyone she knew she was writing a novel. Now she’d make a fool of herself for certain if she didn’t finish.
Her first book came out to excellent reviews in December 2014, and the rest is history. Many books, lots of positive reviews, and a few awards later, she plans to keep publishing until she runs out of years.

First Kiss Friday with The Earl Takes A Wife
Welcome to another First Kiss Friday, my lovelies! Today it’s my pleasure to give you an excerpt from The Earl Takes A Wife that is currently available for pre-order. In this scene, Adrian has just given Celia a necklace for her 18th birthday and she kissed his cheek. Read on and enjoy, gentle readers.
Excerpt:
Her impulse to bend forward to kiss Adrian’s cheek may have been an innocent enough gesture in her mind, yet her heart apparently thought differently, given its rapid rhythm. Could he hear the staccato sound that betrayed her feelings for him whether she voiced them aloud or not? Surely he could, since he was standing so close. Was she the only one who felt as though the world was tipping, as if his mere presence made her head spin?
She should step away. She should distance herself from the man who caused such reckless behavior. She should mumble an apology and flee into the ballroom as fast as her slippered feet could carry her.
Yet here she stood, even daring to step closer when she felt the slightest pull from Adrian’s hand on her elbow. It was so subtle that Celia could easily mistake such a harmless touch as nothing. Instead, she hoped he desired her closer. Her reaction to the gift may have been her undoing. She was unsure her heart could stand much more.
He took several steps backward, plunging himself into the shadows of the night, but not releasing her hand. Fool that she was, Celia willingly followed his lead. Not caring she was no longer in sight of those who may be watching, her spirits soared knowing Adrian… yes, Adrian… wanted to steal a few moments alone together.
Had she not dreamed of this moment for months since they were first introduced at Hollystone Hall? His sister Miranda’s words that Celia should make Adrian jealous in order to win him were but a small memory. She had told Miranda months ago that she could not resort to such a ploy and such unladylike behavior, that it was not becoming of a genteel lady. Miranda had laughed, telling Celia sometimes harsh measures were needed in order to obtain what the heart desired.
Clearly such foolery had not been necessary, because here she was with Adrian. He led her into the dark of his own accord and not because she made him jealous with another. A brief glimpse of the marquis flashed in her mind, but she brushed away the image of his face, knowing she had made no commitment to the man despite her father’s wishes. Phillip did not own her heart, and he never would. It belonged to Adrian from the first moment she had seen him.
Lost in her thoughts, Celia realized they had not gone far, and for that, she was grateful. She could still easily make a hasty escape if necessary, especially if they heard someone approaching.
Adrian gently maneuvered her against the brick of the manor in the shelter of a trellis filled with ivy vines. He placed his body as a protective shield so she was efficiently hidden. Her mind worked furiously. Had he done this before with some other willing lady? Was she just another conquest?
His long fingers reached out and took her chin, tilting her face upward so she could do nothing more than stare into those mesmerizing blue eyes. The corners of his mouth lifted into a sensual grin, and Celia was lost to everything but him.
“Adrian…”
She blurted his name as though they were already lovers and felt a blush color her face crimson, hoping he could not see it in the dim light. Her hands moved of their own accord to tentatively touch his waist. At her apparent encouragement, he stepped even closer until she could feel the very heat of him against her young trembling body. His hand slid to her cheek; the thumb rubbed a gentle pattern as if to calm her, but she was anything but calm. The anticipation of his kiss was going to kill her.
A heavy sigh escaped him. “You should leave.” His voice was strained as though he was struggling within himself.
“Yes… I probably should.” Her hands crept upward to finger the buttons of his waistcoat, the floral pattern in deep contrast to the rest of his dark attire. A mental image from her dreams of undressing Adrian on their wedding night startled her, and she quickly shifted her hands to the edge of his jacket as if holding onto him might give her strength and the support she needed to remain level headed.
His breath was warm against her temple when he placed a soft kiss at her hairline before he touched his forehead to her own.
“You are not leaving,” he murmured, his hands moving down her arms as if she needed warming. His voice was low and husky, causing her flesh to shiver in anticipation of the unknown.
“I cannot,” she managed to croak out, while she tried to find a way to breathe. Somewhere in the recesses of her mind she knew she must flee but she ignored the warning, especially when her stomach flipped as his arm swooped around her waist.
“Why not?” he asked, pulling her closer so there was no doubt left in her mind that he wanted her. She may be young, but she certainly understood the fundamentals of what might happen when she took the hand of a rake and plunged into the coolness of the night.
Celia wound her arms around his neck, touching the curling edges of his brown hair. God only knew how much she had been dying to do that since Hollystone Hall. She swallowed hard and rushed onward, her fate sealed to this man whether he knew it or not. “Because I have dreamed of your kisses from the day we first met,” she confessed, her words louder than she intended, as though such an admission should be shouted for all the world to hear.
Adrian muttered something beneath his breath before he gave her a little shake. “I made you a promise I would behave as a gentleman,” he growled. But he did not let her go, and his face showed an internal struggle.
His voice made her shiver yet again, but she kept her place within his embrace. “I would expect nothing less.”
He took her face into the palms of his hands in order to study her reaction to his touch. She covered one of his hands with her own. “If we stay out here, I have no doubt I will break my vow,” he replied.
“Then, before I lose my nerve to ask you…” Celia hesitated only an instant before she rushed on in an urgent plea, “…kiss me, Adrian. Kiss me like—”
…you love me, she finished inside her head when he cut off her words; for she could not speak when Adrian did just that. Kissed her. Right there. In the moonlight. With half of Society but a breath away.
His kiss was demanding at first. She had no idea what to do with her mouth, since this was her very first kiss. He must have realized that fact because everything changed between them. He softened his lips on hers as he possessed her mouth, but still, their situation was charged with an unseen energy that Celia never wanted to end.
Unsure what to do, she at first stood as still as one of the marble statues in her uncle’s garden. A gentle urging from Adrian encouraged her to open her mouth and follow his lead. A willing pupil, she allowed the master to teach her what he enjoyed, and she discovered that she enjoyed it, too.
He easily slipped his tongue inside. Warm fire erupted in her veins, while her tongue tangled with his. A low moan escaped her, unbidden but easily detected in the silence of the night. A tell-tale sign of the true depth of her feelings for the man who kissed her senseless.
Nothing had ever prepared her for the heady rush of sensations that enveloped her whole being. His arms tightened around her. She clutched at him like she was starving, and only Adrian could satisfy her cravings. Nothing mattered. Not the ball. Not her sisters. Not Phillip. Not even her father. If Adrian could kiss her like this, then surely he, too, must care for her. Did he love…?
“Celia!”
They tore their lips apart as the sound of her name continued to echo off into the night. Her breathing heavy, she melted into Adrian’s arms, placing her head upon his chest while she heard his own heartbeat running wild. He was just as affected as she was.

First Kiss Friday with Caroline Warfield
If you’ve never read any of Caroline Warfield’s stories you are missing out. But today on First Kiss Friday she’ll be sharing the first kiss scene from her latest release Christmas Hope. Happy reading and enjoy, my lovelies! Take it away, Caroline.
At this point in Christmas Hope, Harry has known Rosemarie a little over a month. He met her when she rescued his grandmother’s Bible from the Somme. It is Christmas 1916 and life is very uncertain. This kiss is a promise.
Excerpt:
Harry pulled the Bible over. Most of the pages were warped from water damage, and some were stained from the mud, but it felt familiar all the same. It never failed to fill him with thoughts of home. I will take them there.
Foolish that. You don’t know what tomorrow will bring, or when this war will end.
Rosemarie returned, looking as flustered as she had when she found him at her door. “He’s asleep,” she said as if he didn’t know it.
“Rosemarie, may I stay tonight?” His gaze never left hers.
She put up both hands as if to defend herself and blushed.
Before she could speak, he rushed on. “I mean no disrespect. I will sleep on the floor by the stove. Soldiers are used to sleeping rough.”
Her body relaxed, and she blinked.
He continued, “I rented my own boat this time. I can leave, but it’s dark, and I—” He sighed. “I really want to spend Christmas here.”
She stepped closer then. “I want it, too,” she whispered.
Her face was inches from his. She reached up a hand to push back his hair. He leaned in to smell her scent, all roses and woman.
Before he could close the distance for a kiss, she put a hand on his chest. “You will sleep on the floor. By the stove,” she said tartly, one brow raised.
“Yes, ma’am,” he said, smiling.
He took her mouth gently. At her eager response, passion flared, and his kiss deepened before moving to her neck and the warm spot under her ear. The sound of her moan almost undid him.
An urge to ask her to marry him almost drove him to foolish declarations. Not now. Not yet. But perhaps someday. When all this is over, I will take her home. Let tomorrow bring what it brings. For now, this kiss will have to be enough.
He lifted her, carried her to her rocker, enfolded her in his arms, and began to kiss her in earnest.
Christmas Hope
By Caroline Warfield
After two years at the mercy of the Canadian Expeditionary force and the German war machine, Harry ran out of metaphors for death, synonyms for brown, and images of darkness. When he encounters color among the floating islands of Amiens and life in the form a widow and her little son, hope ensnares him. Through three more long years of war and its aftermath, the hope she brings keeps Harry alive.
Rosemarie Legrand’s husband left her a tiny son, no money, and a savaged reputation when he died. She struggles to simply feed the boy and has little to offer a lonely soldier, but Harry’s devotion lifts her up. The war demands all her strength and resilience, but the hope of peace and the promise of Harry’s love keep her going.
