Happy Release Day Dukes All Summer Long!

It’s a busy day today when you have a new release along with a FREE book blast from RomanceBookWorms.com! But I had to take a brief minute to welcome my newest book baby, The Dukes Secret Wager, out into the world in the Dragonblade Publishing boxset Dukes All Summer Long. Read on to learn more about the my contribution and the set!

He expects to win the wager. He does not expect to fall in love.

When Laurence Palmer, Duke of Stonehaven accepts his friend’s wager, it seems like an opportunity too great to refuse and too easy to win. Though he’s tired of attention from women who only see him as a title and a fortune, all he has to do is accept an invitation to yet another house party full of marriage-minded misses—and steal of kiss from his host’s daughter, the elusive Lady Georgina. Except this lady isn’t like the others, and she isn’t supposed to win his heart.

Is the man she’s meant to love the man she’s sure to loath?

Lady Georgina Norwood realized long ago that suitors were only interested in her fortune. Her parents see it differently. They’re holding a house party with the goal of choosing a husband for her if she doesn’t choose one on her own. She’s certain none of the men invited pique her interest or fill her requirements to love her and to treat her as an equal–the rakish Duke of Stonehaven least of all.

All bets are off when their kiss becomes more than a chance to win a bet. Can one secret wager change both their lives for the better or will they lose their chance at love?

All it takes is one wagering duke, one stubborn lady, and a chance encounter at a lake.

Excerpt:

Georgina thought back to that moment. Even now her stomach twisted at the memory. She’d been so foolish, with a head full of girlish dreams, completely unaware that most men—all men, really—saw her as a means to great wealth and nothing more. She’d never make that mistake again. And she never had. Instead, she believed, she’d become adept at spotting those who angled for her fortune and nothing more. She hoped that her parents had the same skill, since if she wasn’t able to choose any of these men, they would make the choice for her.

She turned to look at the castle beyond; thoughts of Wymar and Ceridwen occurred to her once more. Why couldn’t finding love happen for both of them the way it had for her ancestors? “You’d think our future husbands would know where to find us,” she said. “Like a handsome knight coming to our rescue as in days of old.”

“As appealing as that thought is, it’s unlikely to happen. Instead, you’d best get your head out of the clouds, dearest Gina, and find a man you could come to love from those who will attend your parent’s house party so that your father doesn’t find one for you. That’s as close to a knight in shining armor as you’re going to get, I’m afraid.” Honoria stood and shook her parasol open. “We should go in before we’re missed.”

Georgina stood to follow her and they began to walk the garden paths toward the castle. Her gaze fell on the stranger, who’d stopped to smell one of the budding roses. His tawny-colored hair fell forward, covering his cheek, but when he returned to his full—rather impressiveheight, he turned and their eyes met.

If Georgina’s arm wasn’t linked with Honoria’s she was certain her knees would have buckled. Her stomach somersaulted as his gaze captured hers. Georgina was overcome by the desire to push that rakish lock of hair from his forehead. He swept it back into place with his fingertips before giving her a brief nod. He then turned back to his companion as they walked away as though something monumental hadn’t just occurred.

Never before had she ever had such an experience in her life. Her head reeling, she could only continue to wonder who this gentleman was and why he had had such an astonishing effect on her from first sight.

Welcome back to my First Kiss Friday blog! I’m happy to have my friend C.H. Admirand back to give you an excerpt from her next release, The Duke’s Champion. You can preorder it now for only $0.99 for a June 24th release. She’s also offering a giveaway so be sure to read all the way to the end to enter. Happy reading, my lovelies, and enjoy!

Excerpt:

“Ye wanted to see me, lass?”

Her head whipped around so fast, he was afraid she’d be dizzy from the movement. “I was not sure that you’d come.”

“And why wouldn’t I come when the lass I’ve been courting summons me?” Mary Kate rose from her seat, and he motioned for her to sit back down. “No need to stand up. I’ll join ye, if ye don’t mind.”

She met his gaze and settled onto her chair. “Thank you for coming so quickly.”

He did not say anything when his orders had been to come “at once.” Surely she remembered making that demand. Didn’t she?

She lifted the teapot and held it poised over his cup. “Er…tea?”

“Aye, thank ye, lass.”

“No sugar, just cream?”

Ah, so she did remember, though they hadn’t taken tea all that many times together. Not trusting his voice to give away the emotions colliding inside of him at his being this close to her, he nodded.

“Mrs. Romney made lemon and lavender scones. Would you like one of each?”

Flaherty’s stomach chose that moment to announce itself. He shrugged as Mary Kate giggled.

“I’ll take that as a yes.” She served him his tea and scones before pouring herself a cup.

“Are ye not having anything to eat?” He wondered if she was suffering to the same extent as he had been. Plagued with lack of sleep, awake and replaying a scene he had no memory of, so he was not certain if he really had barked at her, or if his voice had been stern. Why in the bloody hell could he not recall?

“Lass?” When she did not look up right away, he sighed and said, “Mary Kate, how are ye feeling today?”

Her teacup rattled against its saucer until she set it on the table and placed her hands in her lap.

“Ye look pale to me. Are ye not sleeping?”

The emotions in her gaze tugged at his heart and heaped a pile of worry onto his head. He had caused her to fall into this melancholy. ’Twas his fault she was despondent and not carrying on her half of the conversation.

This shite had to end. Now! He rose to his feet, reached for her hand, and pulled her into his embrace. “Lass? What’s wrong?” She trembled against him. “Can ye not tell me?” He felt her shake her head against his chest. He nearly chuckled, then remembered what he was supposed to do and the need to laugh evaporated. “Mary Kate, will ye accept me heartfelt apology? I do not recall telling ye to leave, nor saying such terrible things to ye.”

Her trembling slowed until she was eerily still in his arms. “Never would I willingly hurt yer tender sensibilities, lass. Ye mean too much to me.”

Still she did not speak, and thereby refused to accept his apology. What could he say to convince her? He racked his brain until it ached, and then it hit him—he’d respond in kind.

Easing back, he gently placed his knuckle beneath her chin and lifted her beautiful face so he could gaze into her blue-violet eyes. She blinked, and he claimed her lips, pouring every ounce of regret that she’d suffered because of him into the kiss. When her mouth softened beneath his, he coaxed her to kiss him back with a quick nip of her lips followed by his tongue soothing where he’d nibbled.

Her soft sigh was music to his ears. Not wanting to risk conversation yet, when she still hadn’t responded, he continued to kiss her. Pleading his case without words, he placed a hand to her waist, encouraging her acquiescence with the pressure of his lips and heat of his body.

Drawn to him like a moth to candle flame, she burrowed into his arms until he groaned with need, as every bit of her curves molded to the hard planes of his body, awakening the desire he felt for the lass. Her soft gasp had him easing his hold on her. Rather than point out the obvious, not willing to have that particular conversation with her until she’d forgiven him and until after they said their vows, he brushed an errant curl from her cheek, tucking it behind the tiny shell of her ear.

Needing her to be the one to speak first, as she had yet to reply verbally, he waited. ’Twasn’t as awkward as he thought it might be, the waiting.

Finally she drew in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. “I do.”

“Do what?”

She frowned, then sighed. “I forgive you, Seamus.”

The Duke’s Guard: The men in black who have sworn an oath to protect the Duke of Wyndmere and his family from those who would stop at nothing to destroy him!

Flaherty asks permission to court Mary Kate, but his jealous reaction to her gregarious nature stalls their courtship.

Mary Kate Donovan has had Flaherty tied up in knots from the moment he pulled her free from the duke’s overturned carriage. But the lass hasn’t been saving her smiles only for Flaherty—and worse, she seems to have forgotten his rescuing her, telling everyone of Garahan’s earlier rescue when she was kicked to the curb by Lady Kittrick’s cook.

Mary Kate is abducted—twice—and a misunderstanding has Flaherty leaving his position and resigning from the duke’s guard!

A suitor who cannot take no for an answer, despite Mary Kate’s insistence that she and Flaherty are courting, causes a rift between the two, leaving Flaherty to doubt Mary Kate’s feelings, until he regains consciousness bound hand and foot next to her…in a burning barn!

It will take the patience of a saint—which Flaherty isn’t—and the understanding of the woman he loves to straighten out the situation that threatens the very fiber that holds the men in the duke’s guard together.

Danger stalks in the night, but it will have to get past the Duke’s Champion before he will let harm come to those he has sworn to protect with his strength, his honor, and his heart.

C.H. Admirand Bio:

If we have not met yet, I’m delighted to meet you! Here’s a little bit about me…

I have been writing romance novels for almost half my life, well at least for the last 30 years. I’m a diehard romantic and have to confess the broad shoulders and wicked glint in the brilliant green eyes of a stranger had my breath snagging in my breast, my heart beating madly, and my future flashing before my eyes. At the age of seventeen, I’d met the man I knew I was going to spend the rest of my life with.

I write Historical & Contemporary Romance featuring characters that I know so well: hardheaded heroes and feisty heroines! They rarely listen to me and in fact, I think they enjoy messing with my plans for them. Over the years I have learned to listen to them! I have always used family names in my books and love adding bits and pieces of my ancestors and ancestry in them, too!

First Kiss Friday with Caroline Warfield

Welcome to my First Kiss Friday blog! It’s always a pleasure to have my dear friend Caroline Warfield here to give you an excerpt from one of her books. Today, Caroline has an excerpt from her upcoming novella Music in the Night that can be found in the boxset Dukes All Night Long that releases August 17th. We hope you enjoy this excerpt. Happy reading, my lovelies!

Excerpt:

The sound of music played by a master pianist woke Owen Pritchard in the night, but the player disappeared before he could speak with her. Only one other person he ever heard played with the same skill and passion, Lucia Castellano the woman he loved, who disappeared from his life seven years before. Is it possible the vicar’s downtrodden niece Annie Potter could be the same woman?

*****

“Lucia—Annie—you don’t belong here. Your talent is a precious gift that shouldn’t be hidden away, or worse treated as shame, as your uncle would have it.”

“It won’t feed me.”

Owen leaned as close as he dared, his face inches from hers. “Yes, it could! With your permission I could find you an agent, teachers. We could—”

“That’s a pipe dream and it was never mine. I hated the stage.” She squeezed his hand as if to convince him. “I am Annie not Lucia. I play for the joy of it. I’m not the woman you want.”

Does she think I want to use her like her mother did?

Visions of all the ways he wanted her—of bedding her, of marriage, of children, of a life together, whatever name she chose to use, tore through Owen. He opened his mouth to tell her exactly how much he wanted her.

A sane corner of his brain shouted at him not to rush his fences. Think of her, not your needs and opinions. Her life is hers to choose.

He caught a stern glance from the housekeeper at the foot of the table. Breathing deeply, he changed tack. “Do you know the name of your mother’s solicitor? Have you spoken to him?”

Her eyes widened in surprise. “Sir Francis Hardy. I went to see him when I first got to London. At first, he said there was a will. That I inherited, and he would have funds transferred from my mother’s bank in Rome. He sent me to Aunt Ella to wait, but later he wrote and said the funds were gone. Uncle sold what I brought with me, my few jewels and clothing—for my board he said. I have nothing.”

Mrs. Morrit made a show of folding up her mending. His time was running out. He rose, and helped Annie up, her hand still in his. She stood so close he could feel her heat. This wasn’t the time or place to kiss her as he wanted to, and yet he couldn’t resist a taste.

He kissed her lips with a gentle salute, but swallowed to rein in his attraction. “I want to see you, to spend time with you,” he said, his voice ragged. “But I have to go away on business.”

He put one finger under her chin and forced her to meet his eyes. “Annie, your life (and your name) are yours to choose, but we aren’t finished here. I’ll be back. You have my promise. I’m not going to lose you again.”

She left with Morrit, and Owen clung to the hope he believed he saw in her eyes. I will be back, my Lucia, light of my life. You can be sure of it.

First, he had business with Sir Francis Hardy in London.

First Kiss Friday with Bronwen Evans & a Giveaway!

Thank you for stopping by my blog for another First Kiss Friday! Today my guest, author Bronwen Evans is sharing an excerpt from her upcoming novel Miss Tiffany Has A Secret. You can preorder it for $0.99 and it releases on May 29th. Be sure to read all the way to the end to learn about Bronwen’s giveaway. We hope you enjoy this first kiss scene. Take it away Bron!

This is the first kiss between Lord Wolfarth (Wolf) and Miss Tiffany who is a mathematical and investment genius. Wolf is helping her with a slight problem she is having involving Wolf’s Uncle.…

Excerpt:

Wolf walked toward her, and to her credit Tiffany held her ground. He ran a finger down her cheek then pushed her glasses back up her nose. “As I’m courting you, all you need do is send for me and I shall come.”

She looked at him, those green eyes open wide. “But…but you have so many responsibilities, I wouldn’t want to interrupt you.”

He cupped her chin in his hand and bent closer. “I’m never too busy for the woman I want to marry,” and he pressed a kiss to her sweet lips and felt them tremble beneath his. He knew he should pull away. She’d come here to talk, but he’d been dying to taste her and when she didn’t retreat, he deepened the kiss. She tasted of innocence and desire. She didn’t try to stop him and when her mouth opened to admit him, his tongue swept in. Her arms rose to wrap around his neck, and he pulled her hard against him.

This was what he knew lay underneath Tiffany’s bluestocking exterior. Passion. He intended to make her understand that a marriage with him would suit her very well. They had friendship, respect and, most importantly, passion. They didn’t need anything else. He didn’t want anything else.

Her delightfully delicious moans inflamed his need and were he not a gentleman, he’d have taken her right there in his study. Luckily, he understood she wasn’t ready for more—yet. So, with a groan he pulled back and rested his forehead on hers, trying to bring his body and breathing under control.

Tiffany was the one to step back first. “That was interesting,” she whispered dazedly, her fingers pressed to her lips.

“That was passion. Don’t be scared of it.”

She looked at him as if he had two heads. “Scared? I wasn’t scared, merely curious. That was my first proper kiss. It was—indescribable. Wonderful. Sensual. Stirring. Captivating. Addictive…”

“Not so indescribable then. I’m happy to oblige any time.” Wolf smiled brazenly.

“I wonder if every kiss is like that.” Worrying her lip between her dainty teeth, she turned to leave. “I’ll sneak out the servant’s entrance and see you back here at ten.” Before she closed the door behind her, she smiled to herself and demurely said, “And I liked it. I liked it a lot.”

Wolf was still grinning as he walked to his bedchamber to grab a few precious hours of sleep. It was no wonder he dreamed of Tiffany laid out in his bed like a gift. How could one innocent kiss stir him so?

He fell asleep trying not to think too closely about the answer to that question.

Her quiet fortune, earned through sharp wit and savvy investments, is a secret she’ll protect at all costs. First Kiss Friday with Ruth A. Casie

Welcome to my First Kiss Friday blog. It’s always a pleasure when I can have my dear friend Ruth A. Casie on my blog. Take it away, Ruth, and happy reading, my lovelies!

A Kiss Measured in Heartbeats: A First Kiss from A Dilemma for the Duke
By Ruth A. Casie

I’m delighted to return to First Kiss Friday. Thank you, Sherry, for having me again! Today’s kiss comes from A Dilemma for the Duke, the second book in my Barrington’s Brigade series.

This is a slow-burn, high-stakes Regency romance filled with stolen glances, secret identities, and a romance that simmers until it can no longer be denied.

Lady Lora Preston is intelligent, independent, and fiercely committed to social reform. Garrett, Duke Rockford, is a former soldier, disciplined, guarded, and loyal to a fault. He’s returned home on assignment to root out a dangerous conspiracy. She’s hiding the very secrets he’s meant to expose. What begins as a reluctant alliance deepens into something neither of them expected, something dangerous and undeniably real.

How Their First Kiss Came About

Lora and Rockford have known each other for years. But the man who has returned from war is different, quieter, more haunted, more restrained.

They’ve been working together uneasily to investigate a troubling pattern of coded messages and intercepted letters. With danger pressing in, they’ve grown close… but never crossed the line. Until now.

On a quiet evening, a conversation turns too honest. A long-held silence breaks. And in the stillness that follows, something shifts.

The First Kiss

“You’re not what I expected,” he said, voice low.

“Is that a compliment?” she asked, barely above a whisper.

His mouth curved slightly. “It’s a truth.”

She wanted to laugh, but something in his expression made her breath catch. He was rarely this bare, this unshielded. She felt the weight of everything they weren’t saying.

“You’re not exactly what I expected, either,” she replied softly. “You hide behind your title and your mission. But I see the man beneath.”

A long pause. Then, “And what do you see?”

She didn’t answer. Didn’t need to.

Instead, she reached up and touched his hand…just lightly, just enough to still him.

He didn’t move.

His fingers curled around hers slowly, deliberately, and he stepped closer.

When he kissed her, it was with reverence. A brush of lips that deepened, breath by breath, into something warm and sure. He kissed her like a man who had thought about this, wanted this, for far too long.

Her hands found his coat, clutching it like it was the only thing tethering her to the ground. She could feel the truth of it in her pulse, in his touch, in everything between them.

When they finally pulled apart, she looked up into his eyes. They were clear, steady, and searching.

“That was—” she began.

“A mistake?” he asked, gently.

She shook her head, a slow smile forming. “No. A beginning.”

First Kiss Friday with Sara Adrien & Tanya Wilde

Welcome to my First Kiss Friday blog. Today’s guests are Sara Adrien and Tanya Wilde who have an excerpt from their book Dare To Tempt An Earl This Spring. We hope you enjoy this first kiss scene. Happy reading, my lovelies!

Excerpt:

A sudden urge to run a finger along the line of his face filled her, but more than that, a reckless urge to kiss him. She could hardly believe herself, yet there it was, a wild temptation that made her fingers twitch. But then, once she set her mind on a task, she gave it her all. And, well, Ashley refused to miss the perfect opportunity to grab the man by the lapels and boldly rob him of his breath!

So, she did just that.

She yanked him to her, planting her lips firmly on his. The man had the gall to speak of virtue. Well, then, she would have the gall to kiss this vexing mouth into submission! His heart would, hopefully, follow soon enough.

His body tensed beneath her, his hands coming to rest on her waist, probably unsure of whether to pull her closer or push her away. But he didn’t push her away. She wanted to take charge, to sculpt this impulsive moment into something she controlled. But no. Linsey met her passion with an intensity that startled her, a force that left her breathless. His hand cradled the back of her head, a tender gesture that contrasted with the hunger in the kiss.

So good.

Ashley’s senses reeled, torn between the desire to lead and the unexpected thrill of being met with equal force. The air around them pulsed with the heat of their intertwined spirits; even as she fought for control, she couldn’t deny the electricity sparking from his touch, setting her every nerve alight.

Ashley’s senses spiraled, caught between her desire to command and the thrilling shock of his equal thirst. The air between them crackled with electricity, pulsing with heat and tension, every touch sparking a fire along her skin. She could feel the strength in him, the restrained power beneath the gentlemanly bearing, and she hated how much she liked it.

She was in his lap.

Her weight pressed him back into the corner of the bench.

Then why, oh why, did it feel as though he had taken complete control of their kiss? Over her senses?

No! Ashley wouldn’t allow it.

Her free hand cupped the back of his head, pulling him closer, deepening the kiss, intent on reclaiming the reins. She was not one to yield easily!

But then… Oh. His teeth grazed her lower lip before his tongue pushed in. Her heart stumbled, skipping a few beats.

And then it stopped altogether.

The man could kiss.

And how he could kiss!

Every breath, every movement of his lips against hers sent a dizzying thrill through her, unraveling her will power in a way she hadn’t foreseen. This wasn’t a mere kiss. It was a claiming. And it was far too spellbinding.

Ashley had never been so bewildered before.

How was it possible that his mouth could simply touch hers, and her insides leapt with a giddy thrill?

No, it wasn’t merely that.

It was a heady blend of sparkling contact, a fiery dance of tongues, and his intoxicating scent overpowering her senses. Her heart had ceased its rhythmic beats, and her lungs forgot how to draw in air. Breathless and dazed, Ashley’s bones turned to cotton. Kissing like this, the man certainly didn’t seem like the villain who would send another man fleeing from London.

He seemed like just the right man to hold her in his strong arms and kiss her for as long as she existed. Anyone who claimed a woman like that—claimed her like Thomas did—would surely be—

And then it was over.

He pulled away and stared down at her. Ashley stared back, no words ready to fire from her tongue. Was this what they called speechlessness?

Oh dear, it was horrible!

The tips of his fingers brushed over his mouth. “What did you just do?”

“I, I kissed you.” And you devoured me back. She suddenly laughed. “Why? Are you scared?”

Welcome to my First Kiss Friday bog. We’re thrilled you can join us today. Today’s guest is Deb Marlowe who a first kiss scene between Niall Kier and Kara Levett, the two main characters in her Kier and Levett Mystery Series—Victorian Mysteries with a Slow Burn Romance. Deb is also offering a giveaway so be sure to read all the way to the end. Leave a comment to be in the running and enjoy this excerpt. Happy reading, my lovelies, and good luck!

Excerpt:

When they pulled up before the house, Niall craned to look out, but there was no sign of Turner or any of the other servants. The hour must be late indeed. Gently, he reached out to wake Kara.

She came awake slowly. Turning her head, her eyes opened. She caught sight of him and gave a sleepy, contented smile.

It made his heart twist painfully.

The bond of their friendship ran deep. How much better might it be, if he were he free to take it further? What might it be like, to open his eyes every morning to that smile? To know the day ahead—all the days ahead—would be full of her wit and laughter and talent and beauty?

He longed to find out. And his urge to follow that thread was growing as strong as the worries that prevented it.

He climbed down and turned to assist her. The bracing night air prodded her awake, although she gave a great yawn that left him smiling.

She squeezed his hand. The carriage moved on, heading for the stables. They stood alone in the dark, with the sky full of the sparkling beauty of a multitude of stars and his heart full of conflicting emotions.

“Thank you, Niall.”

It was thanks offered for more than his help out of the carriage. He heard the breadth of her meaning in her tone.

He smiled in answer, returned the squeeze and let her go.

With a sigh, she began to move toward the house. He watched her for a moment, before turning toward his forge and the loft above.

The sound of her footsteps in the gravel stopped.

“Niall?”

He turned around. She faced him, her hair coming down a little on one side and wafting in the night breeze. He drank in the beauty of her. She was a mad combination of exuberance, stubborn determination, extraordinary vision and the lovely sweetness of her soul. It almost hurt to look at her.

And suddenly, she was moving. Lifting her skirts and racing toward him. As she drew closer, she let go and reached out—and leapt into his arms.

He caught her. Staggered back a step. And her lips were on his and he was lost.

Her fingers were in his hair. Her legs wrapped around his waist. He braced one hand across her back to hold her close and the other beneath the curve of her bottom, to keep her, high and hot and pressed against him, with her mouth locked to his.

She’d gone soft and pliant. Need sprang to heated life in his chest and he felt the answering sensation in her. Together, their longings rose and combined, whirling between them, spiraling higher and fueling the fervent, dangerous beauty of their kiss.

She was inexperienced. He showed her subtly, delicately, how it was done. An enthusiastic pupil, she let him coax her mouth open. Their embrace deepened, transforming this encounter into something more demanding and desperate. Something that fought and railed against the cold knowledge of its fleeting nature.

She moaned, a low sound of aching want, and he clutched her closer still, wishing he could pull her right inside, so that this might never end.

But end, it did. She pulled away and looked down at him, her face filled with sorrow.
Slowly, he let her drop, felt the forbidden slide of her down the front of him. But he could not let go, not yet. He bent his head so that their lips hovered close.

“I wanted to know,” she whispered. “When you are long gone and I am lying awake, making myself miserable with what might have been, I want to know exactly what I will be missing.” She ducked her head, pressing against his chest and gripping him tightly for a moment, before looking back up, her expression gone stern. “Perhaps I wanted you to know, too.”

She whirled, then, and was gone, running for the house.

First Kiss Friday with Cerise DeLand

Hello and welcome back to my First Kiss Friday blog! Today I have my dear friend Cerise DeLand who will share an excerpt from her novel Lie Down With A Lyon that releases April 30th. I just love all the books in the Lyon’s Den Connected World and we know you’ll love Cerise’s next contribution. And that cover! So swoon worthy. Happy reading, my lovelies, and enjoy!

Excerpt:

He stepped around her, his height and breadth a barrier between her and the wind. He lifted her chin. His tormented gaze deepened to a river of regret as the gathering clouds blocked out the sun. Catching her wrists, he pressed the palms of her hands to the flat of his chest. Beneath her flesh, his own pounded. “If I could, I would marry one woman.”

She could not bear to ask if that lady was her. Oh, but she could hope. “What deters you?”

“She and I are star-crossed.”

“Can that chasm not be bridged?”

He brought her hands up to his lips, and the journey they took began with the press of his lips to one wrist, then the other. “No,” he rasped. “She is not mine to have.”

“How…how do you know?”

He opened one palm and licked the skin. She trembled at his ardor.

“She wants, she deserves, more than I can give her.”

“Sometimes,” she ventured, caught between desire and propriety, “love can grant more to a relationship than circumstances provide.” She had no knowledge of that, no understanding. She had heard it whispered among her childhood friends in Crawford’s school, or read of it in books that were in essence fairytales for adults.

He hooded his eyes as he bent and nipped the pad of one thumb, then the other. His lips stirred fresh, hot hunger in her blood.

She threw back her head, her eyes squeezed shut. “Please stop.”

He circled her waist with both arms and pulled her against him. His lips in her hair, he whispered, “I can’t.”

’Twas then she threw all caution to the windy afternoon, reached up, and caught his cheeks. Sliding up against the bulwark of his fabulous body, she put her lips to his.

No man had she ever kissed. She knew not how, exactly. But in that moment, instinct was her guide and she took his lips, parted from him, and took them again. He groaned and crushed his mouth on hers. Heaven, at once, appeared before her.

He was fierce in his claim. Ravenous. His arms were iron, his lips a brand, his tongue a fierce probe she met with a cry of delight. He’d said he was not married. He was gentle, persuasive—an animal who took and gave. He’d said he could not marry because the one he desired was so different. But in the command of his kiss, the claim of his tongue, the groan from his throat, he declared how he wanted her.

She believed him. His fierce possession of her. His words.

And she let him have her. All of her. Her lips, her teeth, her heart. How could he not want to claim her? She wanted all of him!

He broke their kiss.

She gasped for air and marveled at the look on his face.

He was enchanted—torn and furious. He cupped her shoulders. His voice a rasp, he said, “I must go.”

Dazed, she let him steady her on her feet. Insulted, heartbroken, she fought for sanity. He would leave her? After this? Was he a fool?
