Blog Tour: CRAZY! HOT! AND LIVING ON THE EDGE

Today, I’m happy to host Shirley Slaughter on blog tour and her book, Crazy! Hot! And Living on the Edge. Take it away Shirley!

Well everybody we are at the final leg of my tour and I want to thank my host for having me and Nonnie Jules of 4Wills Publishing for taking care of everything else. And I want to thank you, my RRBC family and friends for your support.

Crazy! Hot! And Living On The Edge!!

The Author

SHS1

Shirley Harris-Slaughter

I remember going to see a wholistic chiropractor to address some bone issues I was having, and to address my overall health concerns. I saw him once a week without fail. I started to get so much better. I do recommend something like this to get your body working and give you some peace of mind.

As we reached the end of my sessions he started getting into some mind relaxation techniques which I welcomed wholeheartedly. On the last session we were sitting in a room going over everything that he did for me. Then he just sat there and stared at me to the point that I started feeling very uncomfortable being in the same room with him.

So finally I got up after the silence became too deafening and said my good byes. I couldn’t wait to get out of there. I was so glad he didn’t flip out on me while I was in the middle of my time with him.

Now you see what I mean when I called the title Crazy! Hot! And Living On The Edge!! Some crazy stuff kept happening all the time. Some of it was an experience you wouldn’t believe and some of it was downright creepy or crazy.

That’s the way life is sometimes. I have to be able to tell my story with a straight face. Lacking that, adding a little humor or finding humor in what I endured can be therapeutic and a healing experience. Turning it into a fiction is better yet because it allows you the room to say whatever pops into your head.

Folks are already inquiring as to whether or not I do seminars and they are asking me if the story is true. I’m happy to tell them that it is all true!

It’s my crazy upside down life.

SHS6Speaking of speaking engagements. I am invited to speak in Camden, NJ at a Book Event in my honor in Cherry Hill NJ on Saturday May 9, 2015. It starts at 4:00 pm and ends at 6:00 pm. I will go right to the event at the Holiday Inn where I will be staying barely having time to check in. It’s so exciting. One individual found my book online and sent me an email telling me how enjoyable it was. That book is Our Lady of Victory, the Saga of an African American Catholic Community.

I cannot begin to express to you my gratefulness for having my work so appreciated that they would pay all expenses to have me appear. When she found out that I did not have the support from the big bookstores (Barnes & Noble) to put on a book event there, she (Ida) took the steps necessary to get me there on her own. Now that’s what I call determination. That was also a wakeup call for me to take another look at Barnes & Noble. I discovered that they have no respect for Indie Authors. But I’m not going to let them “rain on my parade.” But just know that being in Rave Reviews Book Club is our best hope of getting any kind of recognition. We are becoming a force in numbers. We are shaping the way Amazon is operating and I bet they aren’t even aware of us just yet, not even Barnes & Noble.

Sink or swim: Elizabethan style

PHS:

Reblogging on Archer’s Aim – some of my reading from earlier this week. Details can be important for effect and then what happens in the story.

Originally posted on Quill Pen and Blotter:

I have a scene in my Elizabethan work-in-progress that requires several of the characters to jump into the water, and one of my critique partners asked, “Would they know how to swim?”

That’s an important question. It would be awkward to have the book end with all the main characters drowning (or worse, miraculously developing a skill they shouldn’t have), and Elizabethans were generally wary of water. I was pretty sure I’d read that Elizabethan men sometimes swam for fun (they “bathed” in rivers and ponds anyway, at least during the summer), and I assume people who worked in and around the water could at least dog paddle, but I thought I’d better make sure. Luckily, I found a charming work by Everard Digby, “De Arte Natandi,” a swimming manual written in Latin and published in 1587 (overlapping with when my book takes place).

The fact that it’s…

The bad, the good and the beautiful of the cover design process

PHS:

Reblogging on Archer’s Aim – Follow-up on cover art from earlier this week.

Originally posted on Suffolk Scribblings:

In November I published Absent Souls as an ebook only. This wasn’t because I didn’t have a paperback ready but because I’d planned to have new covers for my books and it made no sense spending extra money on a paperback cover which would only be replaced in a few weeks. Or so I thought.

The need for change

When I first published Second Chance, I couldn’t afford to have a bespoke cover designed and I have the drawing skills of a three-year-old, so I used a pre-made cover service at goonwrite.com. I went on the site, chose a cover I liked, had my book title and author name added and published. If you are looking to publish on a budget, I would thoroughly recommend this approach.

After a couple of weeks I’d sold enough ebook copies to justify buying a paperback cover. It was more expensive, but many people had contacted me…

Fantasy Authors Unplugged: Michael Davies

This is continuing feature on Archer’s Aim – Fantasy Authors Unplugged. I hope to frequently share an interview with a fantasy author. If you have authors to suggest and/or questions you’d like to see answered then leave a comment or send me an email. If you are a fantasy author and would like an interview please let me know and we’ll plan one that fits your schedule. Today, I’m joined by Michael Davies whose new book, Path of the Warrior, is due out in just a few weeks.

Pangea_Book3DPlease share about your new book.

Path of the Warrior is book one of my World of Pangea series. It is set against an extensive mythological backdrop and begins as a coming of age story before quickly exploding into an epic conflict between light and darkness. In this first novel you discover the nomadic people of the ancient Silures tribes, learn about strange and fantastical creatures while also exploring the darkest areas of humanity. We touch upon power, treachery and revenge as well as some of the more sinister events of our history such as genocide.

I like to think of it as a combination of classical fantasy and modern. I stay away from elves and dwarves, but do delve into the pantheons of gods and life of immortal beings. It is sometimes swashbuckling and at other times emotional, while definitely fitting nicely into the genre of epic fantasy.

What are the inspirations for the story or characters?

Scenes of the novel were conjured in my imagination from all over the world. I remember flying into Vancouver international airport and dreaming up the island training school found within Path of the Warrior while I had my breath taken away by the beauty of the islands I saw there upon the ocean. The story arc is derived from my fascination for ancient history and Greek tales, along with an exploration of spirituality.

The characters are another matter entirely. I think they embody a combination of characteristics and charm that I associate with a good many heroes that I’ve enjoyed learning about over the years. I know I certainly have wanted to show the effects of true evil not just upon a large society, but on a very personal level. I like to pose the question; just what does it take to overcome such atrocities and darkness?

What got you into writing fantasy?

I’ve loved fantasy since I was a child. I grew up reading Roald Dahl and C.S.Lewis as well as countless other stories that I would devour upon visits to the local library. As I became older I progressed to Arthurian myth and legend, thanks namely to my grandparents, and then discovered some of Stephen Lawhead’s writings and those of Tolkien. I remember thinking, what if I can create my own world of adventure where anything can happen? I suppose you can say this is my best shot at doing just that.

Who are your favorite authors?

Goodness, there are so many. I respect Paolini for what he managed as he struck out at such a young age. I love Lawhead’s Pendragon cycle, and the Belgariad, but I tend to read around quite a bit. Then of course, there’s the authors I loved as a child such as Lewis and Blyton.

What are your future writing plans?

In the next two years I plan to finish the Pangea series. I have a publishing contract for this and expect it to be accomplished in a timely manner. Afterwards there are several ideas sitting in my notebook, including a dystopian future that examines death, and an urban fantasy novel set in the present. Within the next 10 years I hope to write and publish each of them.

Do common tropes in fantasy bother you? If so, which ones?

I think the only one that bothers me is common not just to fantasy but a great many other genres as well. I hate that nobody who matters ever really dies. I think that if you go on an epic quest to save the world, or fight through one of histories bloodiest wars then you can expect to probably die. There are some that deal with this quite well and laugh at themselves, having their protagonist survive by sheer luck and making it obvious to the character that it is luck, but there are others where it just seems cliche. Death is a natural part of life, it allows for great exploration in any genre.

Fun question – think old west – Darth Vader and Valdemort are in a gun-fight. Who wins?

I imagine them lining up, Darth Vader breathing heavily while Voldemort looks at him quizzically. Both will then toss their guns aside, deeming them of little use against such an opponent. That’s when the real fight begins and probably ends in mutual extermination. Can we throw the Dalek’s into the mix?

MichaelDavies-AuthorBio:

Michael was raised in northern England. At age 19 he moved to the U.S.A. and currently resides in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife Heather, and their daughter Elianna. Growing up he used to write short stories for his younger brother while immersing himself in the fantasy realms of Middle Earth and Narnia. In college he penned his first idea for a full length novel, one which eventually became Path of the Warrior, the first book in the “World of Pangea” series.

Michael has had news articles and poetry published in several anthologies and magazines over the last decade, including an interview for BBC Manchester over his role with the refugees of Hurricane Katrina.

His experience working with the Native American Navajo tribe, and visiting places throughout the southern U.S.A. has helped shape his writing.

Michael also enjoys reviewing other novels and interviewing authors.

Book 1 in The World Of Pangea trilogy, Path of the Warrior, is out May 15th.

Pre-order Path of the Warrior Today !

Pangea_Book3DBook Blurb:

WHAT CAN ONE MAN DO AGAINST THE GODS?

“Where the sacred rivers meet,

Beneath the shelter of the Keeper of all things.

There lies the hall of the beginning,

The ruler of the world before the Kings.”

Pangea is shaken. The past has become the present. Ancient myth has awakened, and legends walk amongst the living. Idris has always known the path of the warrior was his to choose. Now, as war strikes at the heart of Pangea, he must wrestle as a mortal thrust into the wars of immortals. It will take more than his training to face the chaos as darkness strikes deep into the life of his people, and Idris’s own inner demons threaten to destroy him before the battle even truly begins.

Thanks to Michael for sharing his new book with us today. Please take a look at Path of the Warrior and give this author a boost! What Is Needed – Cover Art Poll

archery at sunsetI’ve begun preparations to release What Is Needed in late July. This is a prequel to The Bow of Hart Saga of which The Bow of Destiny is the first book. Currently, What Is Needed is with an editor. However during the editing of this novella I’m working on the other details.

I’m still choosing between making my own cover art for this e-book or commissioning something with similar style to The Bow of Destiny. The main issue with the latter choice is funding. Since this e-book is mainly meant as a giveaway I don’t want to invest too much money into it. However, I am interested in it at least eventually having consistent artwork.

To that end, I’m running a poll the next two weeks to get opinions on whether I should DIY at least the initial cover or just splurge and commission the artwork. I’m also including links to choices for the DIY possibility.

I know everyone’s time is precious, but if you’ve got a few minutes take a look at the choices and express your opinion on the potential cover choices.

Background As It Relates to the Artwork

Here are just enough tidbits to help out with the cover links but if you want more, the What Is Needed posts are still available beginning here.

There is a scene with stabbing violence so I have a possible cover example of that which seems intriguing. The story is set mostly in a large complex like a school so there are a few pictures that cover that. Also, the end takes place at a dilapidated tower so I’ve chosen some examples of that. The choices are linked below:

Tower 1    Tower 2     Tower 3     Withling’s Watch     Withling’s Attacked     Bloody Knife

Duly Noted In Scrivener

Just wandering back to the Inspector and its functions again this week. I’ve written previously about the Inspector in general as well as using keywords and snapshots which are handy features on the Inspector.

Just to review, the Inspector is turned on by using the View menu => Layout and clicking Inspector or CTRL + Shift + I on your keyboard (Italics is just CTRL + I).

Scirv Turn on Inspector

Scriv Doc Notes HighlightedDocument Notes is the first feature on the left of the Inspector menu at the bottom of the bar. From there you can enter notes about the document in which you’re working. Simply type in the field and you have a note. If you want to remind yourself you’ve done something in the document here’s the place to do just that. But notes here are only for the document itself and not the whole project.

Toggle Doc_Proj NotesIf you want to use Project Notes, that is, notes that are for the whole project you can toggle to those or turn them on from the Project menu. To toggle from the Inspector you must be in the Documents Notes feature and click on the up-down arrows to get this menu.

You can click onto Project Notes and make a note for the whole project.

Scriv Proj Notes Window

You can display the same thing in a window by clicking on the Project menu and choosing Project Notes.

Scriv Proj Notes

Looking at the previous screenshot you can also open this feature window by clicking on Manage Project Notes.

From the window you can type in new notes for the project as pictured below. When new notes are added (via the + button on the right of the tabs bar) they have individual tabs unlike document notes. Click on the X to remove a note-tab.

Scriv Proj Notes Tabs

So that’s the quick primer on using notes in Scrivener Inspector. This feature lets you make notes with ease so you have a reminder of what you where going to do – or did (unlike the Scratchpad which allows you to insert text across open projects). They are stored in your document or project rather than keeping all it straight with actual sticky notes.

Why You Should Begin Using Scrivener Today & How

Scrivener is a powerful writing tool. I write about it weekly with tips and usage ideas. To read more of my posts click the Scrivener tag or category at the end of the page.

Scrivener LogoI’ve seen several comments from other writers indicating they got Scrivener but just didn’t have time to learn it. I understand the feeling. When I first started with Scrivener there was so much to learn and I needed to do other work that I didn’t have time to work with it. It wasn’t until I read several posts in which other authors described how they used Scrivener that I began to understand.

Why the confusion and reluctance in engaging with Scrivener? It is fundamentally different from just using a text editor. It is a robust development software for the whole project. We’re used to just sitting down and typing in Word all the things that we are developing, creating any number of files and trying to track all the details somehow. But once you develop a project in Scrivener or convert an existing project into it you begin to understand just what you can do and how it benefits you. The important point is to take the time to learn it somehow and there are great how-to videos as well as lots of reading material that help with Scrivener.

Follow Blog via Email

Enter your email address to follow this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email.

But why start using it today? There’s no time like the present to make the transition. If you have a writing project that needs starting why not make that the point where you begin learning. Why else should you begin in the middle of a busy schedule? You will learn through usage and then understand the power the design of this software brings to writers. Here’s 5 good reasons to make the change from Michael Hyatt.

It’s as easy as this: click File => New Project to show the New Project Window. Here’s a screenshot with Fiction selected:

Scriv New Proj

Choose the category for your writing on the left and then what it will be on the right. Not picture here but below all this just type in the name of your project and then browse to the folder on your computer where you will store the project just like in Word.

What else should you learn? Begin by understanding the Editor and Binder as well as how to manage projects, project templates and document templates. Just knowing what you can do with these elements gets you much further along. Try to find authors who write what you do and find out how they use it. Once I found how other fantasy authors use it to develop and track details of a fantasy world it really helped me get started. Likewise, other bloggers who use Scrivener have developed templates for organizing your whole blogging year. It’s a bigger scope creative tool but it makes writing much simpler by allowing your to spend more time being creative.

Productivity Tool #1.

Droptask

What is it?

Droptask is the visual project/task manager for the person who is allergic to list-making. I am a very visual person. I have always written down notes in a mind-map as opposed to paragraphs of text. I like shapes and colours.

Droptask fulfills all of these wants for me.
