Rave Reviews Book Club’s “SPOTLIGHT” Author Tim Hemlin

Today Archer’s Aim hosts Tim Hemlin who’s the current Rave Reviews Book Club “SPOTLIGHT” Author. This is Tim’s week to shine and I’m happy to host him today. Take it away, Tim!

On Revising

wastelander-cover-1 2Old habits die hard.  When I was young, word counts determined a day’s success.  If I hit my 500, 750, or 1,000 words then life was sweet, if not I was cranky and unsociable.  At the very least, having a daily goal forced me to sit at my desk and work.  Over the years I discovered the downside proved to be sloppy writing simply because I wanted to hit my target.  I needed to learn the art of revision.

Naturally revision needs to be tempered with common sense.  Paul Valery once professed that a poem is never finished, only abandoned.  At some point it is time to move on.  After all, what writer is ever completely satisfied with his work?  However, I think the opposite tends to be more of an issue.  A friend of mine who ran a literary journal once complained that so many poems she read were two or three drafts from fulfillment.  The novelist Tom Williams told a bunch of young and hungry writers back in the 1980s that often his student’s work was initially better than his.  A pause, a smile, a puff on his pipe—yes, professors smoked in class in those days—and then he added but none of them worked as hard as he did to improve it.  Now I see that was why he was published and reviewed in the New York Times and few of his students ever joined him.  Editing and revising are, for me, the heavy lifting in writing.  Yet it can make all the difference.

Author Bio:

TimHemlinAuthorTim Hemlin is a marathoner, teacher, and has his master’s degree in counseling, but his passion for the environment sparked him to write The Wastelanders, a dystopian-clifi published in both e-book and paperback by Reputation Books. He is  represented by Kimberley Cameron of Kimberley Cameron & Associates Literary Agency.

He has also published a Wastelanders short story called Black Silence as a bridge between the first book and its sequel. He is currently in the notes and brainstorming stage for the Wastelanders sequel.

Recently the Muse has kindly allowed him to tap into that creative magic and pen a young adult urban fantasy. If all goes well with the edits and revision, the final draft should be completed by early summer.

Finally, in the late 90s Ballantine published the Neil Marshall series of culinary mysteries set in Houston, Texas. These include If Wishes Were Horses, A Whisper of Rage (nominated for a Shamus Award), People in Glass Houses, A Catered Christmas (the one I most enjoyed writing), and Dead Man’s Broth. He has recently gotten the reversion rights and is planning on reissuing them under an elite publishing house out of New Orleans.

Hemingway liked running with the bulls. Tim enjoys running with dragons (that’s what he calls his grandkids.)

4 Reasons Why I Journal

WritingI never considered writing a daily journal until a few years ago. At the time I wanted to see how much I could write per day on a consistent basis. After a month I was surprised by how many words I could churn out. It gave me a baseline for how much I could expect to write daily, weekly and monthly. I even realized I could write most of a rough draft in thirty days – here I come NanoWriMo.

But as I used a daily journal I discovered a few more reasons to continue. I’ve since read Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way and found that she emphasizes using “Daily Pages” (essentially a journal) to write three pages in the morning. I don’t always write that much since I’d rather spend as much time as possible on projects but the notion and reasons discussed in the book are great for gaining creative traction.

1. I could use it to prime the pump. You want to get started writing but how? Sometimes you need a warm-up and writing about anything can be just the trick to clear the mind. Also, I found that I could set the scene in my mind with a few notes on what I expected to accomplish and how dialogue might flow. I might even return to the journal to further nail down additional scenes depending on what I accomplish.

2. I can track what I need to do during the day. Yesterday I wrote about how I work with goals but I find that putting them in my journal keeps them in my sites throughout the day. I use the Strikethrough button in Word to mark off goals achieved. I can also easily “re-heat” goals that roll over to the next day for whatever reason.

Journal3. I also use a journal to create a loose, fluid schedule of what I’m doing – everything. This way I know how I’m progressing through goals and other activities throughout the day. Now you might wish to use a calendar for this function but I find using the journal is one less thing to update than a calendar. Besides, I find a calendar is better for reminders about events and appointments in advance.

4. A journal can also be used for project development. It’s a great place to explore creative ideas. Once you’ve written these concepts they are easily transferred into other apps or files you use for development such as Scrivener, Evernote, your blog or anything else.

What can you use to journal? I mainly use Word and update it during the day but I only keep a monthly file and transfer developmental ideas to other files and apps. You could use Evernote as a purely developmental journal and tack in links or pictures. You could also use Instagram as a visual journal. While Scrivener would not directly serve this purpose, research containers could be used as a developmental journal as well.

Do you journal? If so, what do you use? I love to receive comments so feel free to leave one. Also, please follow this blog by email using the form on this page. I’m on Twitter @ph_solomon or click the Facebook icon on the sidebar to like my page there.

How You Can Join the Mother of All Blog Tours

Logo B2BEvery author is looking for a way to discover readers so blog tours are a very popular option. I know I’ll be trying to organize as many tours as possible for the release of The Bow of Destiny this fall. But I didn’t think I’d get an early start on tours. However, I just couldn’t pass up an opportunity to take part in one before the release: The 2015 Books To Brains Blog Tour.

Angela B. Chrysler has come up with a generous idea to host a month-long tour on her sites, Brain to Books and AngelaBChrysler.com. Each day a new author will be featured with the total being over 60. Wow, that’s just huge! Talk about generosity – Angela’s got it.

B2B ThunderclapI’m scheduled on August 31st with a pre-release post about The Bow of Destiny. I’ll begin sharing about the details of the book and getting a big jump on pre-release promotion. Many thanks to Angela for hosting and kudos for the idea.

If you’re an author interested in being a part of this month-long tour, there’s still slots available. Join Angela’s group on Goodreads for information about the blog tour and email her to gain a spot on the tour. She’s also looking for assistance in several ways so let her know if you can help.

Also, there’s a Thunderclap already running that still needs supporters to amplify the announcement about the tour. If you’re willing to help with a social media blitz then click on the link and help promote the tour.

Fantasy Authors Unplugged Featuring Nicholas Rossis

This is continuing feature on Archer’s Aim – Fantasy Authors Unplugged. I hope to frequently share an interview with a fantasy author. If you have authors to suggest and/or questions you’d like to see answered then leave a comment or send me an email. If you are a fantasy author and would like an interview please let me know and we’ll plan one that fits your schedule. Today’s featured author is Nicholas Rossis who, in addition to being a fantasy author, is also a finalist in the 2015 International Book Awards for his children’s fiction, Runaway Smile (book link posted below). Congratulations and welcome to Nicholas!!

Q. What’s the plot of your latest fantasy novel?

cover_bundle_700That would be Pearseus: Vigil, the third book of my epic fantasy series, Pearseus (fourth if you count Schism; the prequel to the series). It continues the story from where Mad Water left. Compared to the other books in the series, this is an all-out action adventure story. The political games have all been played and in this volume the characters are forced to fight for what they believe in or lose it all. Many of the story lines are wrapped up, with the action carrying on right to the end.

Q. When did you start writing with the goal of being an author?

Ever since I remember myself, I have enjoyed writing. At school, many of my classmates dreaded essay-writing, whereas I could count on my essays to be read in class.

In 2009, I felt ready for a career change and decided to try again my hand at writing. A Greek newspaper had a segment called 9, that included a short science fiction story each week. I submitted my story, not expecting much.

They published it, and sent me a cheque for 150 euros. I was ecstatic. Sadly, by the time I had written and submitted another couple of stories, the newspaper had ran into financial trouble and discontinued that segment. So, I sent one of the stories to a short-story competition, and, to my great surprise, won. The story was published in an anthology called Invasion.

I then started working on my novel, Pearseus, which turned into a series. I first published that on Amazon in late 2013, certain that I was missing something: surely it couldn’t be that easy. Sooner or later, someone would call my bluff. Amazon or someone would take a look and go, “hey, you’re not an author. What are you playing at?”

Instead, people bought Pearseus and reviewed it. They said nice things about it and actually paid to read my work. It repeatedly became an Amazon best-seller.

Wow. People liked my work. This really was an eye opener, and I have continued to write and publish ever since. I’ve learned a lot, developed my voice and made scores of wonderful new friends. I now wonder, why did it take me so long to take the plunge?

Q. What interested you in writing fantasy?

I grew up reading science fiction and fantasy, so it was a no brainer! Write what you know and all that :)

Seriously, though, I love fantasy because it frees up my imagination for all sorts of wonderful ideas. At the same time, to me, great fantasy comes from strict adherence to the rules of the world. This tension between limitless imagination and grounding in reality is what makes fantasy such a fascinating genre.

Q. What are your fantasy genre inspirations?

Thanks largely to Martin, fantasy is experiencing a well-deserved boom as a genre. From urban fantasy to high fantasy to science fiction/fantasy amalgams like David Wind’s Nevaeh world or even my own Pearseus one, there are fantastical influences almost everywhere. This is particularly true of Indie authors, and I have read many excellent works lately – for example Boyack’s Cock of the South, Phipps’ Elf Killers and Heart of the Staff series, Treharnes’ vampiric Relative Strangers,  Bolton’s great mashup of sci-fi/fantasy and of course your very own Black Bag. They have all planted seeds into my mind, which are much appreciated!

Q. What challenges you as an author?

Time constraints. There is just never enough time to do everything I want, especially since I also have to juggle a day job on top of everything. I try to remind myself that it’s a marathon, not a sprint, but I’m impatient by nature, so I get frustrated when I have the words in my head but lack the time to write them down.

Q. Where and when do you like to write?

I try to write at least a couple of hours each day. The best time for that is in the early morning, before the phone starts ringing. I work from home, so I use the same computer for both my day job and my writing. Here, let me show you…

author photo

Q. Do you have any fantasy titles upcoming?

I’m currently writing the final book in the Pearseus series, tentatively called Endgame. I wanted to publish it in June at first, but now will be happy if it gets published by the end of the year.

Brief bio

Avid reader. Web developer. Architect by training, holder of a PhD in Digital Architecture from the University of Edinburgh. Most importantly, author.

Nicholas loves to write. He has published Runaway Smile, a children’s book, and the Amazon best-selling epic fantasy series, Pearseus. The fourth book in the series is currently edited, and expected to be released mid-February.

He has also published The Power of Six, a collection of short sci-fi stories that include his award-winning short story, I Come in Peace. This, too, has reached #1 on Amazon.

Nicholas lives in Athens, Greece, at a forest’s edge, with his wife, dog and two very silly cats, one of whom is always sitting on his lap, so please excuse any typos in his blog posts: typing with one hand can be hard. Mercifully, all his books are professionally edited.

Thanks to Nicholas for making an appearance in Fantasy Authors Unplugged today. If you’re a fantasy author and would like to be interviewed for “Fantasy Authors Unplugged” just contact me via email or one of my social media channels and we’ll set one up.

Starting An Author Platform Pt. 8: Site Improvements

HammerOne of my goals for the year was to continue improving my website. While I don’t yet have the funds to make major changes, this website is an ongoing project and I can make some improvements. So, continuing to address new authors, here are details of changes I have scheduled starting June 1st which affect my book release in the coming months.

Follow Blog via Email

Landing Page

As I work on the completion of The Bow of Destiny, my website must improve. It needs to become more branded for my writing. Currently, the News page serves as the landing page, offering some updates to what’s going on with my writing and blogging. However, the site needs a more standard page that welcomes visitors and directs them to my writing content. Now is the time to make the change well before the book is released for several reasons:

1. It allows the site to become a sales/promotional tool well in advance of the book release.

2, It will encourage greater connection with site visitors.

3. As I ramp up pre-release efforts throughout the summer, additional content is important. Making readers aware of new, related content can be done through a landing page.

Under ConstructionDownloads Page

I can post free downloads for visitors to take advantage of more easily. Here I can post artwork, my Scrivener template, newly released content as pdf documents with links to Amazon and other major e-book vendor sites.

Other Changes

One important change to the site has already occurred. I’ve enabled mobile site themes so that Archer’s Aim is now optimized for viewing from smart phones. This makes it more convenient for visitors to navigate the site, subscribe and choose download/sales links.

TypingThe site needs additional updates to content on pages so that visitors are more aware of what I’m doing. The Store and WIP pages need such updates to projects where there’s been a status changed.

Also, as funds become available, I can change the site theme to be more directly branded with The Bow of Hart Saga. Likewise, I’ll be able to improve some of my site tools with plug-ins I’d like to use but cannot at this time since the site is hosted free of charge (but I do receive a lot out of it).

For new writers it’s important to start a site even if it’s humbly minimal. However, continued growth is equally important for branding your writing and reader discovery. Look for more changes to Archer’s Aim as the summer progresses and the release date nears.

Inspection! What Scrivener’s Other Bar Does

Scrivener is a powerful writing tool. I write about it weekly with tips and usage ideas. To read more of my posts click the Scrivener tag or category at the end of the page.

On the left side there’s that lovely organizational wonder: the Binder. It provides all the flexibility to arrange your ideas and change the writing structure with ease. It’s one of the features that makes for the wonder that is Scrivener.

Follow Blog via Email

But on the right side there’s nothing – unless you turn on the Inspector Bar. Just click View and glide down to reveal the Layout menu and there it is. Upon turning this tool-bar on you find a number of features that may at first beguile you as mundane functions. However, the Inspector was designed with a purpose: managing your content. You’ll notice that there are several buttons at the bottom of the Inspector as well as several arrows. Let’s take a look at the features available, some of which you may find useful based on your type of writing projects.

Formatting_Page Break Before

Scriv Inspector Notes1. Notes: this first button includes several features that can be collapsed or left open. Synopsis shows the notecard that also appears in the corkboard and it can be closed by clicking the arrow beside the feature title. Next, there’s Meta-Data which allows you to manage the status of the particular document in which you are working and it can also be closed. These two features stay available on the first three buttons. Last is the Documents Notes where you can add all kinds of pertinent information to your work as if they were sticky notes.

Sciv Inspect DocRefs2. Click on the next button over to reveal Document References. This is where you can add Scrivener and external links either of which you may frequently use for reference. This can be especially handy for non-fiction writing where lots of research at the click of your mouse can save you a lot of time.

Scriv Inspect Keywords3. Moving over again you will find Keywords. This is where you can add all kinds of frequently used terms from your project. It’s a helpful location for keeping character and location names organized for quick reference. Writing fantasy, this is a big help for me since you can forget some details and need references in an accessible location.

Scriv Inspect CMD4. The next button over is Custom Meta-Data which allows you to tweak meta-data settings for your project to suite your tastes. This is a great place for c0-authors to designate their tasks by color for differentiation.

5. The next to last button is for Snapshots. If you haven’t used this feature previously, it Scirv Inspect Snapshotstakes a snapshot of your current work which is useful when you want to make changes but might want to revert back to the original. Click the +/- buttons to add and remove snapshots. There’s also the Rollback button available to switch back to the previous version.

Scriv Inspect CF6. Last, there the Footnotes and Comments button which is where you can add these to your non-fiction. The comments feature is similar to the same one in Word and can be useful whether you are writing fiction or non-fiction.

These are all extremely helpful tools for fiction and/or non-fiction writing. They are easily found from the Inspector to allow users to quickly manage content. Some of these functions may bear further discussion in later posts. A number of these features may or may not seem useful at first glance, however you may want to give them a try to see if they help you develop your project more efficiently. If you are c0-authoring a book this is a great way to keep things straight between the two of you.
